Great video! We bought a 30 year old caravan with a little bit of mould behind front seating and a section of the rear panel was soft. Caravan cost very little so if it lasts 2 more years it is a cheap bit of fun and not worth fixing. We will just keep maintaining the caravan so it is safe and ventilate and keep dry as much as possible

Just bought a 9 year old “leaky lunar” - damp test failed but cannot see any damage apart from a smell in one of the lockers. We love her ❤and wondered what paint would you use on the interior to cover water stain?

That’s a tricky question I’m not a huge fan of the Alu-tec as it relies too much on sealant and I’d say 70% of the ones I look at have damaged floors, I’ve just sold a 17 unicorn which needed a substantial repair. Having said that there are a lot of them about so I just might be seeing a ‘normal’ amount. All I can really say is to buy from a dealer who has a legal obligation to you for 12 months (regardless of what the say) and get it checked before the end of the warranty. All caravans have their problems, I wouldn’t worry about the potential likelihood of something going wrong, but I would advise regular checks to catch any issues early. Go with the one you like the look of just as much as any other reason.

Great honest video. I'm afraid that the caravan industry stinks and wants a rocket up there arse .I do feel sorry for the majority of dealerships putting right faulty caravans that quite frankly should never have left the factory in the first place . It's not rocket science not to make something that doesn't leak . Heaven forbid if the Marine Industry had same attitude as the caravan industry . There wouldn't be any boats floating .

Great video, really nice information. I bought a used motorhome 3 weeks ago. The first question I ask to the owner was if there is any leak. He said "No", everything is dry and a habitation cheque was done last year. I ask for a copy of the results but he couldn't found it... Still I trust him, bought the motorhome. Few days later start raining nearly non stop for 3 days, and yeah, I have a leak somewhere from the roof... :( Should've seen your video before.

Very good video. I spent weeks repairing ‘water ingress’ in an older caravan a few years ago as it always possible to do it yourself. We’re going to soon be looking for a newer caravan and any tips for avoiding the use of a meter is much appreciated!
@darrenbull3456543 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for that, pretty much what I said in the video regarding looking for signs but there isn’t much you can do to find the stuff only a meter will pick up. All I can suggest Is buy from a dealership as you have some comebacks and get it checked regularly.

Water ingress at the rear of my 2015 Elddis.. SoLid Construction. Would a reseal and dry out solve it? Theres no staining, no spongyness, and no evidence of ingress apart from the hab check readings.
@atlanticcaravansUK Жыл бұрын
Hi, I’m afraid not, it’s nearly impossible to find where it’s coming in unless you strip it out and replace the boards, then you’ll be able to see where it’s leaking.
@DeborahSiobhan Жыл бұрын
Are the boards not bonded to the outer skin though? Any advice on how to remove them? Would a reseal not seal where its coming in? We are confident (due to hab engineer) that its along the lower skirt

Hi I have put a deposit on a sprite coastline m6 and on the damp report the floor was showing between 16% to 20% and 18% on the rear lower wall, the rest were between 13% and 15% is this something to be concerned about? The engineer as wrote on the report it was a damp day in February when it was tested.
@atlanticcaravansUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I wouldn’t be too concerned, if it’s from a dealer you get a years warranty (regardless of what they say), you could have it checked in six months just to see if it has got worse, obviously if it has then there is a problem, which they would have fix. It’s all about the context of the reading, could it be water ingress? and how could it have got there?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’ve shared the link on a Facebook page which I’m a member of. Our van has suffered from water ingress ( brand naw van in 2016) and our local dealer has not repaired it properly. I think I may need to go to the small claims court to get the issue resolved. Any advice on this would be really helpful. Thanks again.👍🏻
@atlanticcaravansUK4 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl, thanks for your comment. I’d say the first stop would be to get an independent assessment then write to the manufacturer. Any work carried out would have warranty to. What van was it and was it a warranty repair? Regards Darren
@karlthompson19614 жыл бұрын
Atlantic Caravans. Hi Darran, the van is a 2016 Elddis 636. It was purchased new from a dealership called Raymond James. All the warranty work centres around water ingress and the damage it’s caused to the fabric of the van. The front window bar hinge wasn’t fitted using any sealant, and both of the fixing screws at the extreme ends of the bar pulled completely out, and the whole set of windows nearly fell onto me whilst I was investigating the source of the leaks. The front roof light frame cracked in mu5ipple locations which let in rainwater, to such an extent that rain dripped onto the floor and the seating area, One of the front grab handles has not been fitted correctly and has Sikaflex smeared around the handle mounting posts. The front timber st4ucture inside the gas locket is still wet and has live fungi spores growing on it; the list goes on and on. Can you recommend a company or body why could undertake an impartial assessment of my van? BTW, I live in East Leeds, Yorkshire. Karl
@darrenbull3456544 жыл бұрын
Karl Thompson you should be able to go to any Approved workshop to get an assessment, there will be a list in the AWS website. I’d find one that doesn’t sell caravans as the workshop side of things is their main income and will be more likely to have a look for you.

Why not make a caravan like the hull of a boat, a one piece moulded GRP unit of roof, walls and sides. That must be more water repellent than a construction of floor, side walls, end walls and roof that have to be somehow "bonded" together. Oh wait a minute, maybe they would last longer and require less "maintenance" than the traditional build. Can't have that, can we.
