I love the tip about "downgrading" your clothes. There's no reason you can't wear your "nice" clothes on the daily, especially since we're not leaving the house a lot due to covid. If it makes you feel good, wear it!
@clairemarusin5635
@clairemarusin5635 3 жыл бұрын
Any day where I'm not going anywhere (meaning to the grocery store because, well, covid) and I am not wearing exercise leggings and a tshirt, someone in my household inevitably asks if I'm going somewhere or if I'm doing laundry (the tables have turned). I'm so "over" wearing leggings and a tshirt all the time, so "dressing nicely" is now downgraded for my everyday wear.

Ugh, I'm working from home due to the pandemic now and I miss my nice office clothes so much, but I have 4 cats so I can't wear them on the daily because: claws. Don't get me wrong I love my babies and having a cat on my lap 95% of the time is nice but I miss feeling fancy! 😭

@@clairemarusin5635 I don't get how leggins got to be the default comfy clothes in the first place! It's... so strange to me! It's a tight synthetic garment, how can it be more comfortable than baggy pants or a skirt?
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 3 жыл бұрын
@@elenalenaiva Well...sports leggins are synthetic, that's true (although good ones are also breathable and moisture 'transporting', if not absorbing, so they don't actually have the downsides, usually associated with synthetic fiber clothing), but there are also plain cotton ones available. My 'everyday wear' outfit are black cotton leggins (94%cotton, 6% elasthan) and cotton t-shirts/sweaters...not because I'm lazy, but because I need practical clothing, I can freely move in and that dry quickly and don't require ironing or other upkeep. They're also inexpensive and last very long. Unironed, much worn/washed baggy pants, would look even worse, imo and skirts aren't an option, when playing with kids. Too much hassle, making sure, you're always decent during physical play and you can't just slip on a second pair of warm trousers for outdoor activities, either. So, you know, 'live and let live'. The same garment will never fit everyone's lifetyle and taste.
@elenalenaiva
@elenalenaiva 3 жыл бұрын
@@raraavis7782 thanks for giving me a different perspective! I see your point and I guess in your case leggins really are the best option. I personally don't like leggings, they are too tight, too loose or too short and, tbh, too revealing for my taste. So it's hard for me to understand how whole countries start wearing them everywhere all the time and proclaims them the default comfy clothes. Utilitarian? Yes. Comfy? Oh, I disagree. But to each their own, I guess :)

When I was in college, I dressed very ostentatiously and loved it. Bohemian/vintage with bright colors, chunky costume jewelry, and flowers in my hair. Then I started working from home full time and had no reason to dress up or go out. I started living in knit maxi dresses because I didn't like how my body looked anymore. Fast forward 10 years, and maxi dresses are my signature look. I get custom tailored ones with pockets from eShakti in jewel tones or black and pair them with duster cardigans in the winter. I've even started accessorizing a little bit again, even just at home. My fashion icon is an 80-year-old lady I once met who wore head to toe black, grey hair in a bun, and stunning jewelry. She looked like a queen. She said she had dressed this way since she was in her 20s, and I found that so inspirational. My style feels timeless and personal to me now. Even if I look out of place, I feel like me again.

@@iampagliacci8923 Since your clothes don't really fit you properly anymore, thus buying a whole new wardrobe is practical. And we just feel the most at ease in the style we like the most. My response to any comments like that is to ask if they're paying for it. I'll be more than happy to be completely frivolous (i.e., dressing my age when the clothes I have fit and I enjoy wearing them) on /their/ dime. I've gotten comments on my car (it's older than me), phone, etc.. and after asking if they are getting me a new one, thd person never made that comment again. Gotta love how people are willing to spend your hard earned money for you 🙄

Another tip for the initial wardrobe evaluation that I just read about in Elizabeth Cline's "The Conscious Closet" is to take note of the fabric content of your favorite pieces of clothing (in addition to cut, style, color, etc). Your clothes should *feel* nice and wear well, and knowing the fabrics you like will help a lot with making mindful clothing choices in the future.

I’m currently building my wardrobe, pretty much from scratch. I’m sewing my own Historybounding wardrobe. And while I sos have a few items that I liked the cut of, I am slowly replacing those with natural fibres, because I think polyester is the devil. Especially as I live in the subtropics. Natural fibres are what I recommend for everyone. Polyester might be cheap, but it’s not comfortable, and it’s awful for the environment. Within those fibres, preferences vary. Cotton is breathable, relatively cheap, and can have some lovely prints. Silk is the best insulator, pound for pound, and can look very luxurious. Wool is so variable in hand- from super thick coats, to summer weight and very drapey. And wool has tartan and tweed! Linen is the best fibre for me, as it’s the most breathable, has some antibacterial properties, and will keep you cool and dry, and even cleaner- very important when you live in a humid soup! If I lived in a different climate, wool would likely be my favourite, if only because tweed. I live the look of a nice, big wool skirt. But because I do live in the depths of hell, it’s linen for me. Natural fibres are more expensive (though cotton can be very cheap), and that’s why I’m *slowly* replacing all my polyester, but they’re worth it. I’ve only replaced a few items, but they’re the ones I go for all the time now.

I think that's a very good point. I thought I liked cotton as it's so breathable meant to be good for sensitive skin, but in fact it makes for clunky looking clothing on me, is prone to shrink which I don't need with my very long legs and arms. It is also rough on my skin. My favourite fabric is viscose, all versions including heavy jersey. It hangs beautifully, doesn't shrink, is warm yet light and I love it.

Fantastic! good for you! I decided the same related to the "nice china" LOL I decided this about 2 years back that the only special occasions fiance and i have, are the christian holidays that we don't even care much about. This meant that i had these nice plates stashed away, hidden, while we were eating from mismatched plates. Some people can do wonders with mismatched plates - i'm not one of them. i found my old plates ugly and depressing. I use some of them for the cats as i want to try and reduce the amount of plastic in this house, and the old plates the cats were eating from were plastic. i didn't want to spend money on new plates since the ones i already had could do the job just fine. Now we eat from prettier plates and i couldn't be happier. :)

I am definitely that person that wears a different style almost every day. I have never really been able to pinpoint a certain style. The only thing that is consistent in my style is that I only wear skirts and dresses. I have had to get over feeling odd being way more dressed up than everyone else. When I get together with my friends, they are all in jeans and t-shirts, while I'm in a nice dressy/casual dress or skirt and top. I don't mind anymore because I love to express myself through my clothing! Thanks for the video!

I love vintage clothing especially around the 30's to 50's mixed with professional/comfortable items. I mostly wear black pants and long maxi skirts with pop of color of tops. I also love wearing hats wide brim or tea parties hat. Love it😍💓💕 most of my vintage clothing I get in thrift shops. Yes I highly agree that I always save my favorite clothing because it is to much but why do I do that? It's been a year since covid-19 they I stopped caring about my appearance and it has a negative effect on my self-esteem. This was by far the BEST video on finding your personal style. I really like the recommendation to look at your favorite and least favorite items and really think about why you like/don’t like them. Also about going through and looking for similarities in your pinterest board. As a sidenote, I really love your content. It’s kind of a weird thing to say but you and I look somewhat similar. (My father’s side of the family was Dutch so maybe that’s why). I feel like there aren’t many people who look like me. We both have round faces, smaller foreheads, dark brown hair, hip dips, etc. To see someone who celebrates those features has made it easier for me to love my own body and features. Thank you so much for being such a great positive force. 😊

My current style is Historybounding. And not all the same eras. I do love me some late Victorian/Edwardian, but I’m also currently working on an 18th cnsntury working class outfit for daily wear (think outlander season 1 but a bit more neutral). And there’s an 1860s skirt and Garibaldi blouse in my future (though with petticoats, no crinoline). Basically, any era that appeals, from late medieval, through to Edwardian. That’s about a 500 year span, so I have plenty to choose from. It’s not one cohesive style, but it makes me happy.

Another tip which relates to the ones you said is don't let people pressure you to wear something you don't like or don't feel comfortable wearing. I'd add that you don't need to worry about choosing a pre-existing style category (boho, goth, preppy, etc.) because your personal preferences are probably more unique than that, and might include elements of different styles. For me it's worked well to focus on what items I like (cowboy boots, cropped blazers, racerback tops, and so on) and how they work together. That way you end up with a personal style that's really personal!

Just a suggestion, but consider whether your personal style is appropriate for your work environment. It may be necessary to have a separate work wardrobe that is more in line with the requirements of your job. For example, if your style is very casual but you work in a very formal office, you will need to maintain the formal clothes for the office and save your more personally appealing styles for your time outside of work. Likewise, a vintage inspired tailored suit or dress might be a good fit in a formal office, but it would not work so well for a preschool teacher. I like to plan my wardrobe around my activities, and use my personal style to guide the styles of the garments I need to participate in my daily life.

I have been really interested in Japanese fashion (fairy kei, Lolita, larme) for years and I've tried to transform my wardrobe into these styles. I started to add a lot of pastels and get rid of dark blues, greys and earthy tones. I also still liked black but that was easy to combine with pastel for a pastel goth or Japanese look aswell. But I do feel that I still don't really have enough items to be serious enough with the fairy kei look sometimes. Like you say, it's hard to overdress especially with an alternative style. I bought a lot of accesoires but find it hard to go all out. Also I'm a couple years later and I like a more vintage look lately. I still prefer pastels but also would love to wear more earth tones, ocre yellow, brown, green. But I'm feeling quite lost what to do at the moment. Do I let go of the Japanese thing while feeling I never really got there and did it right? Or do I go for both styles, what I would love but that would mean a lot of clothes in different colours which don't really mix together. More like two separate wardrobes. Does anyone else have this dilemma?

I've also liked two different styles for awhile now. Other is very romantic, girly & feminine style (lots of florals, dresses and skirts, pink etc) and other is quite modern, casual, just basic style I guess (like some cute earthy toned sweaters, jeans). I don't know why I like these two very different styles and it is hard to try to build a wardrobe around it. Lately I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed with the whole what is my style-thing and I think I'll just take a break from it. I don't feel like using so much energy and also money because of it anymore. I'm thinking of going for a very simple capsule wardrobe and just doing more cute and feminine makeup and hairstyles lol. Anyway just wanted to reply because I can understand you. I hope you'll figure out what you like. Also maybe think what works for your life. For example, where I live (Finland) affects my style, because most of the year it is not ideal for floral dresses.. And maybe if you need, take a little break from the whole style/fashion dilemma and maybe the answer what style you prefer will become clearer then :)

Darn, I have been subbed to you for a long time. I had it on all notifications, but I noticed you weren't putting anything on. I decided it was time to go looking for you since youtube is great and deleting me from people I sub to. Well, they didn't delete you instead they put me from all notifications to personal. Not sure what is up with that, but I was really mad. I'm so looking forward to seeing your wedding dress.

Wearing something like bike shorts underneath! It helps while you're getting used to both the feel and how you might move a little differently in a skirt 🙂. Enjoy playing with your style and good luck finding new things you love!

One of the biggest reasons why I do not wear "nice" clothes is that nicer clothes look weird if you don't put some effort into the rest of your appearance (styled hair, nice shoes, possibly makeup) and that is just way too much effort (and in the case of the shoes discomfort) for me, especially considering most of my time is spent sitting alone at a desk, staring at a computer screen. If I am wearing something other than sneakers or hiking shoes, it had better be for a very good reason.

YES on the wearing your ‘nice’ clothes casually! When I started doing that a few years ago it really changed how much fun I had with my clothing - and my friends said I came across as confident because ‘yeah fuck you I WILL go out in public dressed like a hobbit and you CANT STOP ME’ 😂

I know what my style is. But I have so much trouble finding clothes I like. Never feel the spark somehow. But what is really weird is that I really cannot handle broken clothes because I find it nearly impossible to replace them even if the item seesms so basic. I had a black jersey T-Shirt dress once and it was my go to item for almost everything. After it got two huge holes into it I had to replace it. But I wouldn't find something. Because I hate it when the Details are wrong. It needed to have a short regular t-shirt sleeve but not cut in an angle, no v-shape collar, no pockets on the bust, it had to be high waist and fitted on the bust and flared under the waist. I should stop above my knees, maybe higher. Impossible! There are a lot of similar dresses after all it's a basic dress. But not a single one had the details I liked. Now I have two similar dresses so I can replace it. And I hate both of them because I don't Like how they look and how they feel. Am I crazy or do other people have the same problem?

I know how you feel! I always have this vision in my head and then can't find the exact item. So I am so glad I learned to sew, because now I can make my dream item. Perhaps you can try taking up sewing? A dress like you decribe should not be difficult to make

If you still have the worn out dress, you may be able to take it to a tailor who can make a pattern from it and sew up a new one! It may cost more than the original dress, but it will save you time and heartache not having to buy versions that aren't what you actually want.

I feel a bit like an ugly duckling because my style is basically sweatshirts, jeans and graphic t-shirts mixed with yoga pants and sneakers. I've attempted to expand into dresses and "nicer" more feminine casual clothes but I just can't seem to find what I like or what feels right. I think my struggles with weight have ruined my attempts to form a style, or elevate my style, because I'm just trying to scrounge up what still fits. Which is just depressing all things considered.
@annakilifa331

If you don't want to wear dresses and feminine clothing in general and just don't feel comfortable in them, there is nothing wrong with that and it doesn't make you an ugly duckling. If you feel comfortable in your sweaters and jeans and all that and if those clothes make you happy then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that and you should just keep wearing those things. It sounds like they don't exactly make you happy though and like you might have self-esteem and self image issues that might stem from some weight issues and that is a bit harder to give advice on. Firstly those things often go hand in hand with some other mental health problems or personal challenges and it might help you to get therapy. That doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with you, just that it might help you to get to a happier place in life if you have someone professional to talk to about those things, both the self-esteem issues and any possible other things related to them, if they exist. Of course that greatly depends on your specific situation and how available therapy is to you and I don't know your actual mental situation so I guess I might be overstepping a bit here, in the end you have to decide for yourself whether that is something that applies to you. Other than that, when this whole pandemic situation is over, you could go to stores and just try on anything that you think looks remotely interesting. You don't have to buy anything, just try everything on, even if you think that you wouldn't actually wear it, just try on everything that looks interesting to you, no matter if you think it would suit you or if you would ever feel comfortable in it. Try on all those things, look at yourself in the mirror and try to determine why you thought it looked interesting, what about it looks interesting and how you feel about wearing it and what aspects of it make you feel good or bad about wearing it. That might give you a much better idea of what you like than your favourite and least favourite clothes that you already own, especially if you aren't all that happy with the current content of your wardrobe. It also helps you to keep an open mind about what you might like and what might suit you and you might discover things that you would have never thought about otherwise. That said, it is hard to replicate that effect without physical stores to go to, because the internet doesn't show you what clothes would look like on you specifically and how you would feel when wearing them.

How do you overcome laziness when it comes to fashion, i wanna look cute, or nice but then when it comes to makeup or hair I give up, if I have to use more than 1 bobby pin I give up. I don't want to have a really nice outfit and have my hair and makeup clash with my nice clothing.

For hair, if you truly don't want to put in much effort, try finding a haircut that has minimal styling requirements and always work WITH your hair texture instead of against it. It's amazing how much effort this saves. For makeup, if you don't want to wear any, don't! However, if you do, try finding a pretty but minimal makeup look that maybe takes 5 minutes to do. If you want some variety, try a different hair accessory or different lipstick/eyeshadow. As long as you're well-groomed and neat when wearing your nice clothing, then it shouldn't clash.

I have a very simple, basic "go-to routine" I do to look put together when I can't be bothered to do my hair and makeup (which is most days). I pull the top half of my hair back with a claw clip, which takes two seconds but makes it look like I did something with my hair. My makeup routine is just concealer, eyeliner and mascara, but I often go without as well. No makeup doesn't necessarily clash with "nice" clothing, it has more to do with how you carry yourself. It's another mindset shift :)

I used to be dressed always in black with a rocker style since high school and now that I'm 31 I got tired of only black in my life and I started dressing in colours. Problem is I'm still figuring out what colours I like and which one fits well with my skin... as a result, I change all the time my style. I feel that idk what I like anymore or what is my style for real as a grown woman 😓

Kind of in the same boat. I like getting things secondhand at the moment, because if I try a new style or color, and eventually decide it's not for me, I don't feel as bad donating it back. There are some things I like that I don't realize have traits in common, then suddenly it dawns on me "oh, look at all this green or grey, I guess that means I like those colors", "these all have embellishments, I guess that means I like embellishments". We have so many years ahead of us, I think it's ok for us to be experimenting throughout our lives. Who we are is ever changing, why shouldn't our likes and dislikes be a part of that process? :)
