I don't have a sewing machine so what suggestions are there for hand sewing? I've used a blanket stitch but is time consuming for large fabric. I've tried washi tape - it's quick and works but feels like a waste. Fray check seems to be the easiest and fastest. Anything else i haven't tried?

Thank you for this! I just inherited a sewing machine from a co-worker whose mother had passed away and none of the siblings wanted it. I want to use it to finish the edges of my aida but have never used a sewing machine before so this demo was super helpful. It was a bit hard to read your digital screen however; what values did you set the stitch width and length to? TIA!

I set the width to the max (which I think is 3.5 on my machine) and usually turn the length up to around 5. Thanks for watching!

I don’t have very many feet for my Janome, so I don’t think I’ve got that one, but it would certainly be worthwhile to get one. I currently just use a zigzag stitch close to the edge of my fabric, but I think the Overlock stitch would be much more stable.

Thank you, Ford! It looks easy. However I don't have a machine. Is it better to have just one machine which incorporates overlooking, or separate machines (overlooked and a sewing machine)?

Any normal sewing machine with multiple stitches (even the most basic machines sold today) will have an overlock (or at least zigzag) stitch. The overlock foot is very inexpensive, and you can use it with a zigzag stitch for very similar results! Thanks for watching!

I use a Singer Tiny Serger...it's a mini serger that doesn't cut the edge.

That's definitely a great way to do it. My craft closet is pretty limited so I'm all about finding ways to do it with the tools I already have. I do dream of having a serger though!
