Hi there. There are a few reasons why drilling pilot holes are a good idea. They prevent the wood from splitting and go into the wood much more smoothly and with less effort. It can also help with accuracy which can be crucial for precise projects. Eliza Tinsley have a screw called "Autopilot" which is a specially designed screw that doesn't require pilot holes.
