You have a great teaching style and your videos are really informative. I served a 5 year apprenticeship as a joiner back in the early 90's , unfortunately the company I was with went pear shaped in the recession in the late 90's along with a lot of other building companies and it was difficult getting another job in the trade, so I ended up with a complete career change and working in an office. Watching you videos really has me missing working on site, the job, the mates and the banter. Though i still have the uncontrollable addiction to buying new tools :)

When I fit my garage timber doors Robin I soaked the 'goal post' frame in clear oil based Cuprinol and let it soak up the grain to avoid rot. Also I use Sikens HLS Cetol to preserve and protect, brilliant product. Doesn't flake, just flat down and go on with an extra coat. Great video.

As a recent woodworking enthusiast, I'm enjoying the videos Robin, thanks very much. This one was especially helpful as I' m going to replace my old battered aluminium garage door this weekend with a pair of Jeld Wen wooden doors. As you say, they are so reasonably priced - glazed version for just over 250 quid !! - and they look really nice. Shame that one of the panes of obscured glass has a hairline crack. I asked the supplier if there was any chance of sourcing a replacement pane, but he said that the manufacturers get the glass from Estonia, so the chances of finding an exact match locally are pretty slim I would think, and a pane that isn't a perfect match would look far more noticeable than a hairline crack. Never mind, still very pleased with them for the price. Thanks again. :-)

That is one of the easiest locks to brake, just a pair of stilsons on the barrel and it soon twists and snaps the two brass screws holding it in place. These are very common locks in Spain on metal doors, and we always weld a steel ring round the part that protrude on the front. I would advise to change for the short one if it just sits flush with the wood.

Hi Robin Just watched your video on hanging garage doors 2 things I learned & or was told was 1) When cutting the bottom of the garage doors was to cut them on an angle this cuts down on the amount of wood touching the floor then dress the cut with tar or in this case you could use your tape 2) strap hinges I always lined the pin of the hinge with a rolled up coke can as a sleeve that way it stopped the end play and stopped hinge from flopping about but it didn’t bind the hinge I learnt these tips from an elderly Irish Carpenter by the name of Danny he was such a clever guy and a brilliant teacher and workmate anyway I hope you find the 2 tips useful take care & stay safe

I was doing just over fifteen year's ago nothing new there made my own templates even for latches and locks , now retired due to ill heath from MDF dust, even from warring a masks, probably from the dust on my clothes, if you do use MDF caution ware masks and cover all's or vacuum yourself off after each job throughout the as I wouldn't wish this on an enemy. I can't enjoy a kick about with great grand son. It's what's on your clothes that you breath in as your movement lifts the fine dust into the air right in front of your eye's, it's so fine you don't realise the magnitude it causes. Good working, PS, get your a corner chisel trend make them one hit from hammer job done.

This video for me is one week too late haha. For the first time in my career I had the pleasure to fit two new rebated garage doors next to each other down a shared alley. As you id of loved to have made them both but you just cannot compete with joinery shops/factories on costs. Those hinges really aren’t forgiving and you really do need to pull those top hinges as far over as possible. Nice video as always Robin, I hope all’s well 👍🏻
@lewiscunliffe10514 жыл бұрын
@adie chip Hi Adie. Well the clients wanted jeldwen doors but unfortunately the garage door openings were far too big for what they had to offer and as they wanted the frames replacing at the same time their was no point adding onto the frames to suite those doors. I did manage to get a company i expect is a large joinery shop to make both sets and as il be visiting the job tomorrow il take a look at the cladding to see if they've been made to suite or the last outer cladding strips have been ripped down like you have said. I expect they will be the latter. Well unfortunately my clients wanted to go with the redwood pine even though i was dead against the idea as like you say its just not really up to it. Yeah it would seem too tight for expansion especially being so exposed to the elements. Luckily i just gave the company i dealt with the overall opening size and what type of doors wanted and they worked it all out, i think each gap was about 6mm. Yes i think il agree on that with you :-) you to mate.

@66oggy2 жыл бұрын
You forget to mention one of the most important steps when hanging any exterior door, a step many joiners can't be arsed with, probably because you can't tell once it's hung. Treating the bottom of the door before you hang it, especially the stiles, and in this case, the trimmed match board. I probably wouldn't on garage doors, but I always fit a drip, not one of the oversized off the shelf ones, but a smallish one made up in the workshop, it all helps to protect the bottom edge of the door.

Top job Robin. Nice to see traditional doors and furniture. Wondered if you could have drilled another hole(s) on the hinge plates behind the swing arms for another scew(s) for a bit more security. Why not frame screws into the brickwork with a touch of grease on the screws. Make sure the client greases those hinges before they wear. Didn't follow how you got the top square, I'll have to watch again. Lovely job.
