In this video I show how to diagnose and fix a broken emergency hand brake on a car. This cable was cut and i show the whole repair procedure in detail. This car was a fifth generation camaro so anything from a 2010-2015 the procedure is exactly the same. gm part number 22747943

Wow, in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s GM cars you’d be able to buy just the cable and replace it. Today you have to buy the damn handle as well. What a way to make extra money for no reason except to give it to the customer up their hole when they bend over. Thx GM. Thank god my 1970 Z28 just would need the cable replaced.😂

******ALERT****** So for anyone having trouble reconnecting the ball into the clip... My advice is 2 tools: slip joint pliers and a medium pait of channel locks. It also helps to remove your exhaust because you will want the space; you can leave the drive shaft. Loosen up the hand lever assembled so it can move around. Use the slip joint to grab the ball end and pull with all your might. Using your free hand use the channel locks to grab the cable at the base so it can't retract. Then set the slip joint aside so you can insert the ball into the clip. Now you can tighten everything down.

@klowny1969 honestly, I had gone as far as pulling the lever assembly out of the car and tried to study it and wish I'd have noticed that spring. That is definitely much easier because it's not that hard to get that lever out if it's already disconnected like mine was. That video would have been great help. Disconnecting from the brakes unfortunately didn't grant me enough slack. It was frustrating but that's half the fun of DIY mechanic work, learning.

now what about if it's the back cable thats the problem? The part that holds the little ball is so rusted that its became big enough to where the ball just slips right out of it when you pull the lever too hard. (ball and front cable still look ok form what I can tell) do you know if you'd be able to route that back cable without removing the exhaust? it's really hard to tell looking at it

The hardest part was getting the ball onto the cable had to use a ratchet strap To pull it closer

Connected the strap to the block holding the cables to the frame underneath the engine and I won’t lie I was nervous it would snap but got the ball in after like an hour

Myn broke today the same way, I replaced myn last month because the cable snap. This time it had tension but it won’t hold and I opened it up again and it looks like something popped out of place where the teeth go

Unless you're on a steep hill, just leave it in first gear. It works until you can get it fixed. On a hill, yes put blocks behind your back wheels.

Just leave it in first gear until you can get it fixed. Obviously put blocks behind your back tires if you're on a hill.
