How To Fix A Car That Idles Poorly (Clean the IAC)

How to clean a throttle body and Idle air control valve (iac). This shows you how to fix a high idle, low idle, and or rough idle. Most modern cars have an idler air control valve (IAC) that can get gummed-up and you have to clean it.
Be aware that unplugging the IAC can trigger a check engine light (use a scanner or disconnect the battery to get rid of the light). If you have any questions feel free to ask below. If this helps also let me know (I like to know when I help someone out!).
Codes that can be triggered are, P0401, P0505, and P0507

This made a big difference in my '89 S-10 4.3L. I can't emphasize enough how important it is after working on ANY sensor to operate the vehicle several times so the computer can "relearn" the correct idle speed. My '89 idled way too fast at first, but a few starts and stops solved that; I think the old gal has another 10 years in her! (the truck, not my wife!)

I wish I had had this video 10 years ago.... My 1995 Ford Contour V6 had serious idle problems for months. Finally it had to be towed to the dealer and they replaced this idle valve.... 10 years ago I hardly new anything about "modern" cars. Thanks to KZbin videos like this, I have substantially improved my DIY automechanic skills.

Did this to my 88 Ford Taurus, and so far it seems I didn't break anything lol and my engine doesnt seem to be stalling anymore. The only weird thing about my control valve was it had some sort of spring and plate attached to one of the bolts and had a bunch of trouble getting it off, but in the end got everything assembled to how I believe it went. Chris fix is one of the most crystal clear mechanics on youtube!

1997 Ford Ranger 3.0 L ; Had serious problem with VERY HIGH idle speed 2300RPM. Watched Chris's video and followed his advice. Vacuum leaks everywhere, literally the old hoses just crumbled in my fingers. Wear gloves when your spraying carb cleaner and handling old hoses. First I unplugged the Idle Air Control Valve, idle went to 800rpm. Removed the ( IACV), sprayed carb cleaner into the bottom holes holding the part vertical like Chris demonstrated. Soaked the valve while I went for parts. Later. Cleaned the carbon junk with Q-tip . Reinstalled everything. Started the motor, right away the motor just purred at idle 800rpm. Thanks Chris

It can be a lot of things. I would first check for a vacuum leak (listen for a whistling/sucking sound while the engine is running). Next thing i would check is your mass airflow sensor. Since it stops happening when the car goes into closed loop (it warms up), it is a problem during open loop. In open loop, the MAF sensor and computer fuel tables are used. Do you have a check engine light on?

My Ranger was idling at around 1200-1400 and was surging quite a bit. I decided to look up why it would be surging and sure enough, everyone was saying it was the Idle Control Valve and and I ended up here. I saw this and your other video on cleaning the Mass flow sensor so I decided to clean both. Sure enough, my engine is now idling at 850-950 and no longer surging. This is because the car is not adjusting for the extra load put on by the AC at idle. Check the IAC like in this video. If it is dirty or broken it wont open up all of the way and you cannot get enough air.

In my experience I've found it much easier to use a pick tool to get the dry carbon out first. It just cracks off and falls out so much easier. For the remnant carbon then use throttle body cleaner (or other aerosol cleaner). Makes for a more efficient use of time and more thorough cleaning. You definitely know your stuff just have that tip to share.
@chrisfix

I bought a really cool smoke machine on amazon. It was designed for small parties and was like $35 and free shipping. I just put a small hose on it and inserted it into my vacuum line and turned it on. Found the vacuum leak in seconds. Smoke came out of it. Not harmful at all. Also did the same thing on another car to find an exhaust leak. Put the small hose in the tailpipe and taped it shut and hit the smoke machine a few seconds and saw the smoke coming out of a bad weld. It was an inexpensive investment and works great at small parties too. :)

Fricking dumb if you ask me... minuscule spark from anything (worn sparkplug wire for example) and KA-BOOM!!! Carb cleaner is quite flammable as well but at least you have been control of it than an invisible gas. Just a thought.
@truemordecai2996

Far From Perfect Actually it’s perfectly safe because the “smoke” has no spark, it’s basically like vape smoke. If anything enough of that might cause a very small percentage of moisture inside the lines, but even then the percentage of moisture is minuscule enough not to cause damage in the short amount of time one would need it hooked up. Another thing is that if you take your big head to a mechanic and ask them to find a vacuum leak they should have a machine there that will do the same exact thing as this guy stated only thing is it will cost you around $50. All that being said it isn’t dangerous for humans or engines for that matter. And his idea isn’t original, it’s a technique that mechanics have been using for quite some time in their shops. The carb cleaner technique is much more dangerous.

Hello Chris , I have 2009 Acura csx and I got it couple months ago, every time I put it in gear the rpm drops and the car rattles, but when switching back in gear rpm rises back and their wouldn't be no rattling anymore, I'm really worried I don't know if that's a misfire but I would like help asap before spending a lot of money diagnosing, the car has only 66000km on it and i took it to Honda they said the car is perfectly fine engine mounts and suspensions wise. The rattle goes away sometimes when I rip the car and stop but at slow speeds it always happen. Thanks a lot.

what is the source of soot in the throttle body?...
@dyoel182
@dyoel182 8 жыл бұрын
+pei bossman Exhaust gasses. Gasses get run back through the engine for emissions purposes and are often oily and sooty. They'll coat the back of the throttle body and IAC, sometimes to the point where the passage from the IAC is mostly blocked.

Cheap gas can cause carbon build up.
@galehess6676
@galehess6676 5 жыл бұрын
In my case it was both poor ignition coil function allowing unburnt gasses back through the vacumn hose, and because the ig coil had been only partially combusting the sparks were fouled a bit and my idle control motor also needed replaced and my 02 sensor had gone bad from the soot... once you have something causing soot, you gotta go back through a lot of affected components and sensors and clean up the mess, after you resolve the firing issues. Otherwise, crap still run poor. Carbon cleaner on air sensor. Change air filter if the re-circ gasses were blackening that. Look at all the common sense stuff (whatever had air/vacumn air (stuff connected to air box with vacumn or return hoses) or exhaust (02 sensor) going over it.
@TheMattc999
@TheMattc999 5 жыл бұрын
pei broker the source of the carbon build up is the pcv valve and to a lesser extent the EGR valve.

Is it carbureted or fuel injected (Im guessing fuel injected)? If you try to give it gas om neutral when it tries to stall can you prevent it from stalling? It's trickier to diagnose on the older cars because it doesnt have a diagnostics system. And what does your last statement mean? It is worded a bit confusing for me to understand?
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 11 жыл бұрын
That codes is "no fuel volume with engine running" which means you may have a fuel pressure issue. Do you have a remote start by any chance? Did you try doing a fuel pressure test? The gauge is only $15 and can be used on most vehicles. Connects right to the fuel rail...

My gasket was loose when I cleaned mine and throttle body cleaner seeped between it and the valve. When I re-fitted it the car was very rough and and would not idle properly for days. Don't make this mistake.
