Other signs that you might have as nasal valve collapse is that your nasal airway obstruction gets better with certain maneuvers. Oftentimes, patients will say, "I feel better and I can breathe better when I lift up on the skin of my cheeks." The reason that makes you feel better is that it's pulling you on the face, also pulls open the nasal valve, which is on the side of the nose here. It helps you breathe better.
Nasal valve collapse can occur for a lot of different reasons. The number one reason is aging. So a lot of times, patients will present with worsening breathing as they get older. And because of the cartilages that have gotten so weak, you have collapse in what we call the Mid valve area, the internal nasal valve area, and you get pinching of the nose. Other causes of nasal valve collapse include patients that have undergone surgery. Anytime you alter the structure of the nose through a prior rhinoplasty in which you did not address the valve areas, the nose continues to get weaker and you get collapsing of the nose. So prior surgery is also a cause of valve collapse. And another reason that people develop valve collapse is nasal overuse. What we found a lot is in patients that are very athletic, that exercise a lot, and use their nose a lot, and are chronic nasal breathers, distance runners, a lot of swimmers, they present with external valve collapse, especially. And then it becomes problemsome for them as they get older that they can't breathe or exercise as much.
The goal standard treatment of valve collapse is typically through surgery, through an open rhinoplasty approach. Now, these are typically covered by insurance because it does represent a reconstructive procedure to improve your quality of life and your breathing.

Everyone who pulls on their face with that maneuver at around 1:00 feels as though they can breathe better, it does not mean you have valve collapse. There is a whole nasal strip industry aimed at doing the same thing and these nasal strips can be beneficial to everyone.

Dear Doc, I dont have enough septal cartilge left because my nasal valve collapse is due to 2 plastic surgeries :-(. In that case, would you recommend ear or rib cartilage? Every doctor tells me something different... i'd love to hear your opinion, as I feel like ear cartilage is too weak. Thank you so much!

After surgery to repair deviated septum and never being able to breathe thru my nose, my nose collapsed… It was repaired by same ENT, but not well.. 20 years later I was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos which few docs even understand… sad…

I had a rhinoplasty/septoplasty in 2016 for collapsed nasal valves and other issues, and am about to have a suture suspension repair because the valves collapsed again.. I also just found out I likely have EDS.. so I might just have to keep dealing with this?? :(

Hopefully you have an ENT who has some insight into how cartilage is effected by hEds… Mine was onto something, prescribed antihistamine spray, tabs, and gastro meds… had zero idea why (then) but I’ve never been able to successfully breathe thru my nose… As a trained dancer it was twice as difficult… This occurred 20 years ago.. My hope is all docs attend professional seminars on the subject of Eds… Best of luck to you~

Can this also cause mucus to accumulate in the sinus and chronic one sided sore throat that the nasal blockage is on? I have had to move my skin on my right side to actually breath through my nostril so I can fall asleep. This has been a complete nightmare for me for many many years.

Look into nasal dilators (work for me) in order to sleep until you get surgery to address the issue.

i think i need this. i was implented a wengen breathe implantant 4 months ago but it didnt help for the collapse issue. I think this is how you did it,is the right method. or would you rather think the wengen breath titan implantat is the right thing? But it didnt help with the collapsing valves... what do you think I should do ?

Means the collapse is too strong & needs a stronger support placed in a certain area, almost like a door stop. I got a latera implant but my nose is so screwed up it didn't do. much. I wear Q-Tips in my nose to hold it open. Which caused me to actually make my own breathing device to help me

@@LexaTerrestrialx does breathe right strips help you breathe better? I had a wengen titan implantat planted and now the next surgery will be the nasal valve collapse. I hope this next surgery will end this journey of pain. Hoping the same for you.

@@galnasherki wow what is a Titan implant? that sounds incredible... although strangely enough i am watching Titanic footage rn haha... i've always been fasinated with it... What is a Wengen TItan Implant & what does it do? I've had latera but it didn' do much however I got threads Put in my face & that helped a bit too. I also deal w/ Turbulent airflow. Breathe right strips don't even stay on my nose so I manually do it with Paper Tape!!! Try it!! helps in lifting my nose so it doesn't collapse. also placing it near the bones helps too. I actually made a breathing device that looks like a nose ring & helps w/ a multitude of nasal issues, especially collapse.

@@galnasherki P.S did you have surgery prior to needing an implant.. like did any type of surgery cause the collapse???
@galnasherki

@@LexaTerrestrialx Wengen titan implantat was invented by a swiss guy called "wengen". Its a "M" shaped little piece of metal called titan that they will put on your top of your nose in a surgery. You can also search in youtube for it. Titanic news is tragic but Iam worried more about my health then I can consider paying attention to the news. The Wengen implantat helps keeping the inside nose entry open but in my case the nose walls (the sides of the nose) are collapsing and the nose entry inside close too. With the breathe right strips I can breathe good so the nasal valve collapse surgery will adapt this function. Prior the wengen implantat surgery i had mainly the nasal septum surgery which caused this all. This was 10 years ago. I can recommend you a Doktor in germany for this issue if you like. The others doctors tell me she is perfect.

@@Alpha_fitz you're not joking!!! sounds like what happened to me & many other patients would got this procedure. the ENT shows lack of concern or covers it up. Hopefully you did or are not going to develop empty Nose Syndrome. Once your sinuses settle from thee infection which hopfully didnt do any damage it should be less obstructed. But the surgeries they do, do not help, they need a new method. Medical Malpractice is Sadly extremely common. Do not worry though - there is help out there
