Anatomy of the nose. The nose is made up of two bones that form the upper one-third of the nose and five cartilages that make up the lower two-thirds of the nose. The lower cartilages are comprised of two upper cartilages known as the upper lateral cartilages and two lower cartilages known as the lower lateral cartilages. In the midline of the nose is a septal cartilage that separates the left and right sides of the nose. The internal nasal valve is comprised of the area between the septum and the upper lateral cartilages. The external nasal valve is comprised of the lower lateral cartilages in the nasal tip.
Difficulty in breathing can occur due to what is referred to as nasal valve collapse. When the cartilages of the middle or lower third of the nose are weakened or narrowed, they can collapse during inspiration. This narrowing can occur or be worsened as you breathe through the nose. In very severe cases, the nostrils can pinch on themselves causing a complete obstruction.
In order to correct weakening or narrowing of the nasal valve, a portion of the nasal septum is removed. It is important to maintain what is called an L-strut, an L-shaped portion of the septum that is at least 1 cm in width. A rectangular portion of the septum is removed. Grafts are fashioned from the septum that are later used to reconstruct the nasal valve areas. The internal nasal valves are strengthened through what are known as spreader grafts. The external nasal valves are strengthened through what are known as strut grafts.
Spreader graphs are placed between the upper lateral cartilages and nasal septum, effectively spreading or widening the nasal valve area, allowing for improved nasal airflow. Strut grafts are placed on the undersurface of the nasal tip cartilages, reinforcing them, allowing them to bend less during nasal inspiration. Combining spreader grafts with strut grafts can effectively make the nose stronger and less prone to pinching during nasal inspiration.

I dont see how your nose can function with part of the septum removed and or lose its strength.

I have the most difficult time breathing. My nose DOES collapse when breathing in through my nose. And the upper area looks like it has smile lines in it, moreso as I age. If you wrinkle up your nose, that is more accentuated on me. Almost like wrinkles! I was reading a book called "Breath A New Science of an Old Art" by James Nestor and they were explaining this exact thing. I looked it up and ended up here. I'd be amazed if I finally got some relief. I use 2 nose sprays, a nasal moisturizer, an inhaler and decongestants at night. Still I can't adequately breath.

This sprays make thing worse in the long run. You should go to en ENT for a consultation, it’s only like $200. You may need deviated septum surgery but it’s worth it.

@@adamk4733 thank you. I do go to one and they have done a deviated septum and bone spur.. I almost bled out four times and ended up back in the hospital. I think I just have some scar tissue from it or something. Thanks.

Is nasal valve collapse the same as empty nose syndrome??? Is empty nose syndrome caused by nasal valve collapse??? I need to know because I'm afraid I have empty nose syndrome because my septoplasty failed and now it feels like I'm suffocating 24/7 . My surgeon said it may be nasal valve collapse but why am i feeling like im suffocating all day????? I lose so much sleep and i feel like banging my head on rocks all day due to the feeling of no oxygen in my brain!!! Somebody please help me out... if nasal valve collapse can make me feel like this too so I'm not worrying so much... thanks

@@ryanlp5628 that's nice to hear. I'm just freaking out because it's getting worse day by day. Every night now it feels like I'm going to get into a seizure because lack of oxygen. I had my first ever seizure just 30 days after my first surgery, which was the septoplasty for turbanite reduction and deviated septum...

@@ryanlp5628 so I don't why the f I would go into seizures exactly 30 days after the surgery with a feeling of super lack of oxygen. My only theory is that the surgeon hit a nerve. I absolutely do have nasal valve collapse because now when I breathe in my nasal valve on my right side completely caves in. It never did that before surgery. And I'm thinking because the surgery failing, meaning nasal valve collapse is due to too much injury to the nose, the surgeon hit a nerve that triggered my brain to get me into seizures.

Can the nasal osteotomy worsen the valve collapse?
@LexaTerrestrialx
@LexaTerrestrialx Жыл бұрын
That’s a very good question Actually… I’m curious too. I had osteotomy’s done, but now the bones are crooked & denting into my airway and causing it to collapse. I think osteotomy used to straighten your bones, reduce them, or remove pieces of it from your airway wouldn’t harm or make it worse. It could possibly help, but I don’t know.
