He enjoyed the new used fishing reel. It has no problems now. Recently however, I just bought them another used reel. It's a Daiwa Longcast graphite EL 9000x. It has the same issues. Unfortunately when I tried doing this repair it didn't work because the other side isn't fixed like most newer fishing reels. The wire is bent to go into the other end. Thanks Dennis! I am restoring an old Mitchell 402 Saltwater that had a bail issue where the wire was striking the handle on every 2nd or 3rd turn. Found the issue was that the entire bail had been bent backwards toward the handle direction. It took some very careful effort but it works fine now. I tried putting a 302 bail on it since the part is the same but I’ve got to get one of those Mitchell saltwater size tools. It’s a pain to do w/o one. I’ve got to put a new bearing in it. I was lucky that the set screws moved easily so I could get the old bearing out. It’s going to be a nice reel. If I understand it right a 402 is the high speed version of the venerable 302. It’s another Mitchell for my collection I have 10 now. Still want a 498 PUM someday. That’s the only Mitchell I want to add at this point. Have you ever worked on the auto-bail on a Mitchell Ottomatic. I have a beautiful 330. It’s a lot of fun to fish with it but a real pain to work on. This was a very interesting video!
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Yes - the 402 is the same size as the 302. The gearing is different. Be careful with the bearings. Almost every time you get a bail hitting the handle, it is because the bail wire has been bent. It is usually the result of the reel being slammed against something like a pier rail, boat deck, etc. Occasionally it is a bent handle causing the problem, so always check both - Dennis

Thanks for the video, My reel completes the trip except at one specific spot in the rotation. I am assuming the the mal-function is in the trip plunger? Trying to decide if it's worth it to buy a new rotor and try to fix it as good as new.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
The one point where it does not trip is likely at the base of the ramp where the most leverage is needed to flip it. It is not a defect and there is nothing you can do there. Simply note that point and set your bail after it. If you cracked the rotor, crazy or super glue an epoxy may help keep it together - Dennis

My problem is quite different. My Shimano Solstace 4000 with the Quickfire 2 trigger has the problem of a bail closing mid cast. I'll throw the lure and 20 yards later the bail closes shut. Also, there are times when the bait hits the water, I turn the handle to click close the bail and it remains open. That's not as bad, I should be manually closing the bail by hand anyway. I'm waiting to see my lure keep going one of these times when that bail slams shut mid cast! Any ideas?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
You need to check the bail trip mechanism inside the rotor. It is most likely sticking and would need to be cleaned, If dirt is stopping it from fully setting, then the bail will move as you describe when you are casting - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Sorry to be naive but, is this "bail trip mechanism" located on one end of the bail spring, under the cover? Not the bearing end, the other end. Just unscrew the screw and have a look? Thanks.

Yes - take the spool off and use a penetrating oil spray where the trip mechanism is. That part is likely sticking and not closing fully, as a result it will open because it is not fully engaged. It that does not solve it, you will need to remove the rotor and do a full cleaning - Dennis

@FarFromPar4 жыл бұрын
Could this also cause the bail to close while casting? I have an old shimano 2500 that this started happening to.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
It is most likely that you have a trip lever that is sticking and not fully anchoring the bail when you set it to cast. You need to remover the rotor and spray the lever with penetrating oil where it points out under/inside the rotor. Work the bail a few times and that would help loosen and stickiness. Then try to cast and see if that fixes the issue - Thanks for asking - Dennis
@FarFromPar4 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks for the quick reply! Would removing the trip lever cause any problems. I would then just have to manually close it every time, correct?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
You need to make sure that you can lock the bail in open before removing the trip lever for manual operation. Some reels have a direct tie between the two and if you pull the trip lever, the bail will not stay open. I think you will be OK. Check the schematic to make sure. Is the a sub-brand for the Shimano 2500 like FX, or Sedona, or MX ir something else? I can try to find the schematic if you can give me the sub-brand model - Dennis Dennis

Hello, i want to ask you this, when i lift up my belt it locks, and when i put it down. It doesn't work on lock, what is the problem?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have a bail trip mechanism that is sticking, assuming that the springs are working OK. Remove the spool and use a penetrating oil like WD40 to spray both points where the bail connects to the rotor on the outside and if there is a lever that is visible from under the spool, spray that too. Work the bail back and forth a few times to see if that can help free it up - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
You can keep rinsing with the WD40 to free it more, or you may need to disassemble the trip mechanism the clean out dirt and grease that cannot be dissolved

What the best wire to made a bail spring???
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
You need to get a direct replacement from the manufacturer or from a parts distributor. You cannot fashion these from straight wire. - Dennis

i have a small reel with a pretty thick bail wire and got it brand new but notice it was quite stiff closing by reeling and i end up using my hand to flip it closed and i was getting upset i may have bought a junk reel and then i realised the factory set screws on either sides of the arms needed loosening and now it closes easily but again there is one position that sometimes gets stuck ,i think it is internal problem on the firing trip or possibly a design flaw found in most reels but not my shimano lol so idk what to do,i dont want to start taking it apart, although they say you should not use the reel arm to close bails but rather do it by hand but that is annoying
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
That one position that is sticking is probably at the height of the bail trip ramp. That would be a design issue and not a part problem. - Dennis
@ARCSTREAMS3 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle ok as i figured so there is not much i can do about this i guess, my shimanos dont have this problem and they seem to be designed to trip the bail via reeling arm because its so smooth
@ARCSTREAMS3 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle also this happens specially with non forgiving anti reverse reels ,once you open the bail and did not get enough room to reel it closed it can get stuck at this position and i have to semi close the bail and change position to open it again , the other thing is at this position the bail wont even flip back all the way ,its such a bad design flaw

Will it effect line lay?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
It should not change the line lay - Dennis
@vjanda13 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle I must have been too rough. Getting top heavy line lay. Think I need to bend arm backwards a little bit as my reel can't accept line lay spacers. At least bail arm works 😂
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
Maybe. Check to make sure the bail arm itself is square and not tilted forward. It may not be resetting fully. You can generally flush that with a good spray of a penetrating oil like WD40 to help it swing all of the way back if it is stuck - Dennis
@vjanda13 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle That was the problem. The arm wasn't swinging back all the way. After a bit more persuasion with some pliers everything is aligned and working. Just spooler reel and it's nice and parallel. Thanks for all you help. Tight lines?

How do you fix the switch on the bottom of the reel keep it from going backwards
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
This feature is usually controlled by a spring, either inside the gear assembly or under the rotor. If it is loose, my guess is you have a broken or detached spring. You should get the schematic for the reel - Do an internet search with you reel make and model and the word schematic and you should find it. You should then check for the set up and then check to see that the parts are there and not broken. - Dennis
@garybonobowood4 жыл бұрын
It's a little trickier if the reel has a bail trigger, like my 80's Shimanos, but I got it closing properly with a little bend.
