Thank you so much! My husband passed away in February and next thing I know, I have an outrageous water bill because of the constant leaking. This was super easy and an awesome way to prove I'm going to be OK by myself!

Crystal clear instructions made the job a snap! (I would probably flush the crud from the lines before replacing the parts, but that’s just a minor detail.) Thanks so much for posting!! We saved ourselves $$$$ for not having to call a plumber.

Very nice video. It clearly explains the process. I have 2 tips for you: 1) ensure the drain stopper is in place so if you drop the screws or springs, they don't disappear down the drain making your project bigger than it needs to be. 2) The brown water was not from the old grommet. It was from the corrosion/mineral deposits on the inside of your shut off valves. Instead of cranking on those valves without water flowing, I would suggest running the water while shutting off those valves so that the corrosion and mineral deposits flush through those valves. The way you did it, you may have forced some of those mineral deposits into the valve seat possibly damaging the valve so that it doesn't completely seal. Again, thanks for posting.... and it was a great video.

mr diyguy123 Hmm. We have a leaky bath sink. Bought a new faucet to install. But... the shut off valves don't shut off. Advice?
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it is pretty common for the shutoffs not to work very well, and you have to shut off the water main. This will be usually in the basement, garage, or crawlspace.

Hey, I figured it out from someone's comments. I turned on the water, and gently turned the valve knobs left and right until they freed up. Cold valve went from grind+squeak to smooth. Some black water came out. Then to stop the drip I turned off the cold water supply. The hot doesn't drip. It's a single spout faucet. We can replace faucet later. Maybe I will just leave it as is. Not my property. Thanks for getting me started with your vid :)

For those of you who are interested in some possible alternative solutions; I managed to switch the left with the right side (as opposed to buying new parts), and the leak stopped! Do this before you spend money on new parts that may not be necessary. Thanks for creating this video!
@HowToLou

+Tommy AbdAllah - Thank you. That is a good idea for a quick fix. In fact, just pulling everything out and putting it back in might stop the leak for a while. These parts do wear out, and chances are that this kind of fix will only last a few weeks or months. If you don't mind working on the drip again fairly soon, this is worth a try. Otherwise, these parts are less than $10 and the fix will last for years.

Are you kidding me, you're going to turn off the water, take it all apart, switch the parts around and hope it seals? Instead of buying a kit for 7 bucks and doing the job right? You're either a hack, the cheapest man alive or someone's slum landlord. I think I lost IQ points reading your post.

This was the most helpful video for me. One thing I learned from trial and error-- my replacement springs did not have that slight taper described in the video, they were straight cylinders, and they did not work for this project. They go in fine, but you can't get the tap off! I used the replacement gaskets with the original tapered springs and it was a success.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for this video. After putting it off for way too long I finally fixed the leaky utility sink faucet in my laundry room using this as a guide. Amazing how simple it is - you laid it out so well. I will say that I, too, had a hard time shutting the water off! I don't think it'd been done in ages. I had to put a wrench on one to turn it. So much so, the packing nut had to be tightened when opening the valve back up again after repairing the faucet; it was dripping quite a bit. All good now (although the crusty drain is leaking when water is dumped into the sink, but that's a repair for another day!) THANK YOU

I hardly ever go to my condo, and today noticed my utility sink dripping. I turned off the water valves underneath and will now try to use your wonderful video to fix it myself! BUT, I have a question: If I can't get around to fixing this for a week or so, do you think I'll be ok to just leave the water valves off? I mean, no water can leak out now, right? I live on the 3rd floor and would hate my neighbors underneath to get any damage. THANK YOU!!

Excellent video. Just one thing I would add. I see your sink drain is like mine and I drop things all the time, so would advise putting a towel or something over that drain hole for when you drop the little spring or black washer before you get it in. I would suggest that you tell everyone to turn off the main water valve in the house before attempting this especially people without a plumbing background. I followed your directions exactly but being a novice I thought I had turned the water off under the sink but all of a sudden pulling out the cylinder a volcano of water came rushing out and up which was highly pressurized and very hot. I was rushing everywhere to get towels to put down to soak up all of the water. There was water everyone and the ceiling is ruined as well as our dining room ceiling. I was soaking wet and had to be careful going to the basement because I didn't want to fall on the basement stairs since I was soaking wet. Now instead of saving money I have a lot of repairs. Your directions were great but I would tell everyone as an extra precaution to turn off the main water valve. I wouldn't want anyone else to have the experience that I had. Thank you!

Are both bonnet nuts standard threading? That is, righty tighty, lefty loosy? I try to take the cold water off (counterclockwise) and it feels like it is tightening.
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, both standard. Calcium from hard water can build up and get them pretty stuck. Try dripping some CLR on top and let that sit an hour to try to melt some calcium. Warming the nut with a torch can also help, because the warm metal expands.

nice video. Do these faucets have aerators ? If my faucet neck is a little loose, how would I fix it after loosening the base neck ?
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 8 жыл бұрын
+scorpionbradford - Mine probably had an aerator when it was new, but was eventually taken off and discarded be cause of mineral build up. It was 13 years old when I moved in. You don't need aerators. They mainly make the water flow look nice. You should be able to tighten the neck of the faucet with a pair of pliers, at its base. If it is leaking there, taking off the aerator helps, because it reduces back pressure in the faucet.
