Addition: Some tires have a forward rotation indication. If you have such a tire make sure it is installed correct otherwise your tire profile is backwards. I usually have the brand name over the valve but if you have a big cut and patched the tire having it at the valve is a great tip! Thanks for that!

Great idea finishing at the valve. I’ve done that but never thought to push the valve stem up
@joshlengemann9970
@joshlengemann9970 2 жыл бұрын
There is also another reason why to end the install at the valve is the best way to do it. Some tires are very tight to get back onto the rim, so you need to push the tire’s edge to the middle part of the rim all the way round, logging into a slightly smaller diameter to find a bit more room. That may be the only way to pop the remaining part of the tire over the rim. If the valve is in the way you can’t find enough room, so need to make sure the install ends at the very valve, just like Chris was showing. Thank you Chris for sharing your pro-proven hints and tips 👍🏻

I agree with ending at the valve. It’s easier to keep the tube from pinching there, especially if you have to use a tire lever as a last resort. I’ve had to use a tire lever more often than I’d like to admit when installing a brand new tire.

Great content and everything you explained is completely accurate, however at least for me it's not always as easy as you imply. When I flat I'm typically not in my work area with a table and a bike stand. Thats the thing about flats, you might be anywhere when they occur; an area of heavy traffic with limited area to work, maybe rain or snow, it might be 100 or 22F out, one I sweeting and the other my hands are cold because I can't do this with my winter cycling gloves on.

Chris thank you! Great video I have used my secret $20 to cover the hole to get me home (old school) now its duct tape thanks to you. I flatted recently and I did find the glass I ran my finger over it and it was a bloody mess. A driver actually stopped think he saw the blood and felt sorry for me it was deep and long. Dumb on my part. Fixed it and finished my ride if I had duct tape I could had stopped the bleeding .

I've always carried a small piece of a shop rag to run along the inside of the tire. It will catch on the offending object without risking cutting yourself. You could also just use your cycling glove to run around the tire better than bare skin.

Running tubeless now on my road bike. Recently piece of glass caused a flat on the back, stopped pulled out the piece of glass, plugged the tire with one of those "bacon strip" plugs, added a little sealant, inflated with CO2, and continued my ride. Never had to take the wheel off. Still carry a tube, tape, boot kit, etc (just in case). but haven't used a tube in nearly 3 years.

With tubeless you can use the tire levers to finish putting on the tire because there is no tube to pinch. But remember not to push the lever into the center of the rim and puncture the rim tape and brake the air seal.

To find the place on the tire: pump up the tube and you will hear the air hissing out. Align the tube with the tire and that will be an approximate location of the tire issue (assuming the offending glass, thorn, metal shard isn't still in there!)

Don’t you worry about cutting your fingers when you’re looking for the shard of glass or thorn in the tire? It’s never happened to me but I always think I’m going to cut my finger open on something and then I’ll be bleeding like crazy while I try to finish the installation.

@@ChrisHornerCycling Another trick: Add a couple white tissues to your tube's ziplock - shards snag the white tissue instead of your finger, and it's easy to see white tissue on black rubber.

@@ChrisHornerCycling No seriously... I want to see you do it. Don't slash your tire or anything, just change the tube on a street corner. No commentary, just do it as the introduction. I came here to get pointers. If you want fodder for a longer video, I have some questions if you want them. I was on a 250km ride in November. Early in the ride I rode over a blackberry branch, and got a flat. I couldn't find the thorn, and got another, and another, and another. The last time, it was dark, raining and just above freezing. A convenience store clerk let me change the tire inside, and allowed me to warm my hands under the hot water in the washroom... I searched and searched for the thorn, and never found it. Miraculously, I rode the last 100km without another flat. Trust me, I'll take any hints I can get. As a commuter, a quick tire change is essential as well, though fenders add a lot of time to getting the tire off.

Also worth noting is that after inflating with CO2, it's always a good idea to release all the pressure when you get home and re-inflate with a regular hand pump. CO2 will seep out over time more easily than oxygen. That's why after inflating a tire with a CO2 cartridge, you may find you have lower-than-expected pressure the next day.
@mattfoley6082
@mattfoley6082 3 жыл бұрын

@ChrisHornerCycling
@ChrisHornerCycling 3 жыл бұрын
You are right. Very true. I should remember that one.
@rodjonsson813
@rodjonsson813 3 жыл бұрын
Not true. Air is mostly N2 and the difference between N2, O2, CO2 is negligible. This would be true, if filled with H2 or He2.
@scottc2041
@scottc2041 3 жыл бұрын
It is true. It has been shown that it is not due to the atomic weight problem as you mention, but by the fact that CO2 is more soluble in the butyl rubber tire, so it actually "dissolves" through the tire quicker than a normal air mixture.

That tire was a 23c. If you really struggle then use the tire levers. When I was bike mechanic back in the day sometimes there is no choice but to use the tire levers, just know that it’s easier to pinch the tube and then you got to start all over again.
