This is a great video and I am thrilled that I found your channel. When I asked Kohler about my issue they recommended I purchase GP1059291 seal and 1374724 washer. You didn't mention the washer in your video. Where is it and does it need to be replaced? Thanks again and enjoy your coffee.
@UltimateDiyer

That is the washer that is located between the part that stays in the tank when you remove the canister like I show In the video. You don’t need to pull that part to repair the canister 99 out of 100 times, that’s why I didn’t mention it in the video. As long as it’s not broken it should be left alone. Thank you for this vid. Helpful. My problem is. If I flush the toilet the water does not kick on to fill the tank. I've cleaned and flushed the flush valve. I don't believe the float is sticking. However, if I turn the water supply off, and then on, the water rushes into the canister as it should. Perplexing. Any thoughts. Have you encountered this issue? I'm now subscribed to your channel. Much appreciate your coaching.

Thanks for the help. My problem was with the yellow disk but it appears to be an installer induced failure. The installer apparently removed the two locking protuberances on the stem of the disk. I see no way it could be normal wear. After 6 years, the disk began shooting off whenever the toilet was flushed. Your video walked me through the disassembly and installation of a new repair kit. I was having no success finding the repair part until you said that I needed to get the model number off the tank. Thanks again.

Great video. My problem is that the canister moves left or right after a couple of flushes making the chain taut, and the canister doesn’t close so toilet keeps running. I already shortened the chain as much as i think is right. Any ideas?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 2 ай бұрын
My first thought was the chain/handle as well. Maybe the canister is defective and causing it to stick. The next step would be to replace it, if you are sure the chain and handle are adjusted and working right. Make sure the handle isn’t bent out of shape.

The only real adjustment that might help that is adjusting your fill valve so that the waterline comes all the way up to the top of the canister. If that doesn’t work, you may consider just replacing the canister all together and see if that solves the issue

@UltimateDiyer this is the problem I'm having too. Is the middle of the canister supposed to be full of water? The way ir seems from your explanation in the video is that the center of the canister is full of water and that's a what slows its closing? Or did I misunderstand that? Thanks!

Good morning, great video. Question? My Kohler like your example seems to have problems. Everything seems to be working however the toilet doesn’t flush it fills the bowl with water and doesn’t flush. Used a snake, wide open. The toilet on the other side of wall back to back works great. Could it be the top valve u mentioned? The bottom seal has been changed and seals the tank fine. After sitting the bowl does drain down to normal. Help please..
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 6 ай бұрын
It’s hard to diagnose without see it in action but if the bowl is filling it sounds like maybe the flush valve isn’t allowing enough water to enter or the fill valve is functioning correctly. Take the tank lid off and flush and see if the take is emptying completely into the bowl. You should only have a small amount of water in the bottom of the tank.

We’ve spent a lot on hiring plumbers and carpenters and electricians, but are feeling like we should learn some basics to save money. But who can we learn from? Well, this video helped us a ton! $25 fix and who knows how much more it would have cost us had we called the plumber. I have subscribed! Thanks so much! Next up…do you have a video on how to re-attach a faucet handle that’s fallen off? It’s a kitchen sink handle that sits on the side of the faucet.

I am happy the video helped you and that you subscribed. I haven’t fixed a handle in a while mainly because there are so many different models and usually by the time they get bad the customer wants an all new one. But I will definitely upload the next one that I do. Most of the time it’s a small rubber seal that needs replacing but you may need a special tool to get to it. Some are easy and some are not depending on its age.

That’s very interesting, I would most likely just replace the canister because the canister should not be able to move. Finally a guy that shows the detail of the pieces and the quick repair and replace methods. Nice video , appreciate the close-ups of the two piece unit. Nice thanks.. if you take a rubber hose that is a little longer , coil it near the canister connection - much like a service loop in electrical wiring , lightly zip tie it that way so the coil flexes - it might fix that issue pr prolong the inevitable. I saw someone disassemble the yellow cap , there is probably a nifty way to do that - but they showed no closeups.

Good video. It seems the fitting on my yellow disc is fine and intact. But the hose is stiff and brittle and keeps popping off so it seems all i need is a new line. But im not sure if the is a little clamp holding the line on the fill valve or if it just pops off. I dont wanna go in and just pull and end up breaking my fill valve. Should that just pull off? I've been having a related but not identical issue. In my case the issue is that the flush valve drops down too quickly, preventing the bowl from refilling properly regardless of fill valve settings. Is it possible I've got water inside the canister that's weighing it down, or is it a design issue?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 17 күн бұрын
We’ve had several others with the same issue and generally replacing the entire valve assembly. Seems to fix the problem. Just make sure that the water level is set correctly which it assumes you did by your description. Sometimes the handle itself can be bent and not flushing properly as well, so be sure you check those parameters. Also be sure you’re checking your fill valve that it is functioning and filling correctly. If it is clogged and not putting enough water out, sometimes it will not get enough water out in time and the canister shuts prematurely.
@willswanson1840
@willswanson1840 17 күн бұрын
@@UltimateDiyer Thanks! The problem actually arose when replacing both the flush valve seal and the entire fill valve in one go, so it shouldn't be an issue with the fill valve. I'll replace that entire upper flush valve assembly and hopefully that'll fix it!

I did this replacement a few months ago when the old one broke at the bottom nub. Recently, I've found that there's a tiny trickle of water into the bowl after the tank is full. I pulled the flush canister and checked the gasket. It still seems to be in good shape, soft, and mating surfaces were clean. Is it possible the fill valve is not closing all the way and needs to be replaced?

My theory is that the canister is coming down to quickly, before letting all of the water out. I tried messing with the chain, it doesn't matter. This use to work by the way, and recently just stopped. Not being experienced in this area, does this sound like the canister itself could be the issue to someone more experienced? Or something else?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 2 ай бұрын
In older units with flappers, the flapper gets hard and doesn’t function properly, so it could be the canister itself. Another possibility is that the water isn’t set high enough. I set mine as high as possible without overflowing the canister. Also make sure hard water hasn’t clogged the bowl jets, that also happens. Lastly the handle and chain can be out of wack but you said you messed with that. I would try a new canister unit if you have tried everything else. The fill valve can make things act weird as well but that usually doesn’t make the canister fall to quickly unless it’s not filling with enough water, “clogged”. Start with the simplest things first like water level, make sure handle is fully opening the canister, then look at water flow into the tank and bowl. Then try a new canister, new flush valve last resort. Let me know what you find, thanks for watching and asking the question

@@UltimateDiyerIt actually ended up being a calcium buildup on the siphon jet on in the inside of the bowl. The jet couldn't force water out fast enough to flush the toilet. I broke it down with some toilet bowl cleaner and a small knife to chip away at the buildup. Now it flushes great! Thanks again!

I’ve seen this a few times in the past something seems to go wrong with some of the canisters and they have a sticking point. It works the same way to get a stronger flush by making sure the water is as high as possible. Set the float as high as possible without the water overflowing into the canister. Possibly and possibly the handle is bent and out of alignment. Every once in a while I change the entire handle assembly if it seems to be sticking. You can slowly push the handle and see if you find the sticking spot. If that doesn’t solve the problem, then I would look closely at the seal or maybe even the entire flush assembly.

Question for you. On our Kohler toilet with this flush canister, the yellow disk on top that the hose connects to comes out of the center plastic piece when we flush. The canister raises up, hits the hose and dislodges the yellow disk. What recommendations do you have to fix that? Do I need to replace the whole canister assembly? Can the yellow disk be super glued or epoxied in place? Thanks for the help!

That sounds like a defective fill valve. If they ran all new water lines they may have gotten trash in the line at hookup. I would just replace the valve fill valve, the part is under $20. There is also a gasket in the valve you can replace for a few bucks that might fix the problem. I have a video on it under my plumbing playlist.

I’m not positive without seeing what it’s actually doing but what you’re describing sounds like the same problem with the Kohler yellow top sounds like when you go to flush the canister is hitting the rubber line, causing it to pop the top off. I would replace the unit and maybe see if I could find a more flexible line, Possibly a little bit longer that you can kind of pin up away from the canister valve.

Thank you, this worked. However, a couple of comments. Yes, the new one twisted apart just as you described. The old one took significantly more force to unscrew, especially where it is located. Hands do not work that well down inside the tank. Secondly, it is very hard to reattach the chain if the canister is in place. Conversely, it is very hard to twist in the canister if you have already reattached the chain. Catch-22.

Make sure the hose is connected, you might try adjusting the water to the unit. If that doesn’t fix it look at the flush/fill valve, take off the lid and flush it to see what location the noise is coming from. If it is the fill valve, replace the flush valve if it’s coming from the canister, replace the canister. Most of the time noises even vibration comes from the fill valve itself.

@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 6 ай бұрын
Harry, honestly it sounds like the fill valve needs adjustment. When you turn the adjustment screw, and then flush again is it not changing the water level at all? If it is not, you may not be working the adjustment screw properly or it’s defective. With the lid off do you see water running over the top of the canister? If not the gasket at the bottom of the canister may need replacing. It would be unusual for the fill valve or the canister gasket to be bad on a brand new toilet but not impossible.

I replaced the valve assembly no issues. The tank however still doesnt fill up with the hose attached to the yellow tip. If I remove the hose and have the water fill directly into the tank the float valve shuts off the water supply. WHat am I doing wrong? Why doesnt the tank fill with the hose attached to the yellow tip?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 4 ай бұрын
Water comes out in 2 places. The hose and the bottom of the valve. The hose fills the bowl after you flush, that’s why it goes down the canister, If the tank isn’t filling up I would look close at the bottom of the valve and make sure it has water coming out of it after flushing. Sounds like there is something wrong maybe blocking the outlet in the valve assembly. I can’t see what happening but if it sounds like water is running down the drain, make sure the canister is seated properly and not allowing water to escape.

Yes, it does just snap out. You have to go counterclockwise and push fairly firm. You’ll fill it click and then come loose. Just make sure that you have the water off and if you can either use a sponge in a bucket or a wet back to get the rest of the water out of the tank so you don’t have a lot of water on the floor And I do agree with what they say. It sounds like there’s something causing problems at the bottom of the valve. If it’s leaking, you may be able to change that gasket at the bottom or you may need to replace the entire unit if there is a crack or something wrong with it.
