What could it be that when the float goes all the way up even after adjusting the height through the screw knob thing and the water rises above the float and goes into the overflow?

Thanks a ton for this video! I just replaced this valve with a brand new one and it worked for a day or two and then would not shut off. I was ready to rip it out and take it back to exchange it but I removed that too like you said and I instantly noticed minerals and deposits sitting on top of the valve. I flushed it a couple of times with a glass over the top, put back together, and now it is all good. 👍🏼

Hey man, hope all is well. I did everything you said. Flapper is good, flushed out the potential mineral deposits. Then went and bought a new rubber seal (little black thing). Then I quarter turned it until it clicked. Toilet STILL WON'T stop running unless I push down on the cap of the fill valve. American Standard parts, only 2 and a half years old. Very frustrating. Please help.

Honestly, when they start getting “fussy” like that, it’s easier to just replace the valve. It’s easy to do, and they’re only $10. Also, there’s a trick where you just replace the upper portion… it can be done quickly and with no tools. OMG! Papa Joe!!! I am a 70-yr old woman who thought I was going to go STARK RAVING MAD listening to the toilet run for the past 2 weeks. The maintenance guy in my bldg came & told me it was the big plug at the bottom of the toilet & I needed to buy a new one. WRONG. I could see there was nothing wrong w that plug. So I carefully followed your instructions . You instructed us to click off the top of the gray plastic bit & then unscrew the black part of the tank thingy to the left . So I got it open & saw the other white plastic part was clogged w weird gunk. I removed those nasty chunks w a needle nosed pliers & rinsed out the white plastic thingy with a glass [as you demonstrated] in case there were additional mineral deposits. WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!!! Bless you kind sir for your clear & concise demonstration. I still cannot believe I repaired the dang toilet when the maintenance man had NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT lol 🤣 Blessings to you! 💖💓💞

Went over my 85 year old father's house and he told me he had called a plumber because his toilet would not stop running. The plumber was going to charge a $150 just to come and check the problem. I quickly went on KZbin and found this video and fixed the problem for $3.50. Without this video I would have gone and bought him a new fill valve for about $30. So not only did this video save him hundreds of dollars from a plumber but it also saved him $26.50 when I stepped in and became his plumber. So thanks for the video I'm sure my father will be using KZbin from now on to troubleshoot problems.

Growing up, if my family had house issues we had a family friend who was VERY handy, and we called on his help often. Now he is passed away, and small things here and there have started to pop up at my mom's house that she's asking ME to help with! I'm not a plumber or a handyman, I'm a 20-something with a dead end job and a music hobby. When my mom called me today to ask if I could replace "the thingy in the tank that goes up and down with the water," I let her know I'd be starting from scratch and using the internet to learn on the fly. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for making this sort of information so readily accessible.

I want to thank you for this video. I have been having to turn my water on and off at the floor because I didn’t know what was causing the over filling issue and my septic tank was taking a hit. Hi Joe. I see in your video that the little metal stem pokes through the seal center. Mine does too, but after replacing the seal, it still doesn't stop. I'm presuming the lifting of the black arm is intended to push the seal down on to the white area, but on min the pin just pokes out and leaves the seal in place. Is this the way it is supposed to work, or am I missing something? And if it is supposed to push the seal down on the white ring, how does yours do that but mine does not - even though I can see the end of the pins on both ours and my seal? Help.!@@papajoeknows8355

ok so I did what you said and actually I did see bits of the inside pieces broke inside so I took it out and it's still 🏃‍♀️ running and they are pieces that broke off from the filler inside they are gray pieces so I will have to replace the whole thing this is what I will do thanks for giving me some insight of what to do.

saved me some headache. I have had it with my creaky old house and its plumbing problems! had six plumbers come out last year for one problem. but now this minor problem comes up with my john! Just that I am fortunate enough to find someone with a toilet mechanize just like mine! I did replace the toilet about 6 years go, so it isn't a "special" configuration like lots of stuff in this Annityville horror look-a-like house I inhabit LOL. I am just glad I can fix it thanks to this vid! Aces! I am liking and subbing! :D

Thanks for your video. I have the Fluidmaster 400. Mine was leaking by the seal you showed and so I replaced it. No change. I flushed the fill tunnel for 30 seconds full flow, no change. I cleaned the white plastic seat at the top of the fill tower, no change. Something else is causing this problem. When I replaced the entire assembly, the leak by is gone.

I have a brand new toilet I installed lately, and the fill valve inside the tank wouldn't stop filling the tank. Looking at your video I used your advice and removed the top valve and flushed the screen looking thing inside the tube. It had rusty sediment from the supply pipe. I reassembled the valve and I now have a toilet that acts as it should. You sir have made me a very happy guy because your advice worked! Thank you so very very much for posting the video. I am now a subscriber and will watch all of your content. You have videos on things I need to learn. Thanks again and I'm so grateful to you.

Thank you Papa Joe! Following the municipality's repair of a broken water line, the flush valve on my toilet wouldn't shut off. I removed the top cap per your guidance and lo and behold, a small pebble was in the center hole where the needle operates. Removing this pebble returned the valve to operational condition! You saved me a weekend trip to the hardware store and the aggravation of an afternoon of plumbing repairs!

I ended up have debris from reno end up under the cap, and I would have never known how to open and find that! It flushed a few times fine, then kept running water. I took the top off like you said, ran the water with the cup, and sure enough there were 2 rocks or whatever stuck in there. Removed, and wa-la, toilet functions again! Thank you so much

Not any sediment under the valve, but the annoying high pitch noise seems to be resolved. This valve always had noise problems when it replaced another one a couple years ago.......it eventually got worse over time. It's a fluidmaster (uugghh) the cap removal was a beast to remove! It's an American Standard low flow commode. TO MY DISMAY, ONCE I TURNED THE WATER VALVE BACK ON, I CAN HEAR PRESSURE DIRECTLY FROM THE FILL TANK VALVE. THE MORE I OPEN UP THE WATER FROM THE WALL, THE MORE SOUND IS NOTICEABLE. The toilet isn't running, no ripple in the water, no drip.......nothing, it still fills slowly, it shuts off just fine. ANY INPUT ON PRESENT ISSUE WOULD BE GREAT. MY WORRY.........IS THE TOILET RUNNING, DESPITE NO SIGNS OF IT? THANK YOU.

The replacement diaphragms via the amazon link come 10 to a $15 package, but are supposedly for a SPECIFIC model of Fluidmaster shutoff. How "generic" are these diaphragms? I don't know the exact "model #" of what I have.

Hi! What do you call that water level thingy that is rising while the tank fills? Mine sticks. If I push the cylinder with my finger the water stops running. I just bought this house so I'm not sure how old the 400A is, but it seems like an easy fix. The water here isn't particularly hard, I don't see calcium build up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 😊

It’s the float, but between us we can call it a thingy. Honestly, when they start getting “fussy” like that, it’s easier to just replace the valve. It’s easy to do, and they’re only $10. Also, there’s a trick where you just replace the upper portion… it can be done quickly and with no tools. Dude... I don't know how I came across your video after searching for answers for days now. This video did the trick. My fill valve was spewing water, causing the tank to be full and run water into the bowl. A huge waste of water that has jacked up my water bill. I purchased the whole fill valve system to replace it, but I couldn't get the toilet water shut off valve to shut off. That needs to be replaced too. So, I bought a Sharkbite shut off valve, and a connector. I was going to do this project during the week but just ran across your video. I just unscrewed the old Fluidmaster cap, and replaced it with the new one. Didn't even changed out the whole system. I called a plumber today, he quoted me $320 for the job. Where can I send YOU the check?

Thank you very much. This Video clarifies so much as I was afraid to pull the stem out of the clip as i thought outloud, "What happens if I break the clip?" I was unaware of that rubber gasket. Now I know my first steps. I just want to know, if it continues to run, how is water being wasted if both the tank and bowl remain filled. Where would the water go? Have been staring at the mechanism for weeks🤷‍♂️. I will be a fool if I have to pay $195.00 hourly to call the plumber if I can do it myself.
@papajoeknows8355
@papajoeknows8355 Жыл бұрын
What happens if the fill valve keeps running is the tank fills to the height of the overflow pipe (the tube that sticks up in the center), then it goes down that tube and into the bowl. As the level of the bowl slowly rises, the weight of the water pushes it down the drain. Where I live, water is expensive, and a running valve can get costly in a hurry.
