Does your lawnmower have NO SPARK?? LawnMower not starting? Bail handle doesn’t move the engine cable far enough to turn the switch on? Need to adjust a stretched engine brake cable on a lawn mower but it is supposedly not adjustable?
Don’t replace the cable before you watch this video. I have a great trick to adjust your non-adjustable cable.
The brake cable, also known as a zone cable or on off cable or kill cable, releases the brake off of the fly wheel brake mechanism and turns your kill switch to the on position. Over time, the cable can stretch and you need to tighten it to make the lawn mower work.
This does work with some drive or self propelled cables.

@Steve's Small Engine Saloon IF there is no spark because the cable has basically stretched/gotten longer and can no longer pull the connection back as far as it needs to go, shouldn't one be shortening the cable so it can pull switch back into place to make the spark connection? Just a question so I have the correct information next time I need it, and Thank You!!

@@theducklinghomesteadandgar6639 The length of the cable, itself, is fixed - it can not be lengthened or shortened. The trick to unscrewing the plastic ends just makes the outer casing "longer" which fixes the problem for a while. Shorten the inside cable or lengthen the outside casing - two sides of the same coin. Good one, Steve! - Joe -

@@joesinakandid528 Thank you for responding and explaining!!! I'm sure my brain understood that somehow, or would if had been physically looking at it, but it is refusing to relay the info to me!!! lol!!! I'm missing something for me to grasp how making to the two points farther away from one another, when being slightly elongated likely from heat and a little due to normal wear and tear is the original issue in the first place, how can making the two point farther from each other fix it? Wouldn't the space between the two ends need to be shortened to return it back as close as possible to factory distance be what fixes the issue? I know it's something simple and I'm gonna smack myself in the head, I must be missing the knowledge of how the connections and inside cable work with one another and how they are placed around their connections spots. I'm gonna check the mower tomorrow!!!

Hey Steve, I'm trying this tomorrow, My 6.25 Quantum Craftsman (Tecumseh) had no spark --- out of nowhere, after running perfectly for years. FYI... new Champion plug & ignition coil is $15 on Amazon, just in case.

Today I went from frustration to a big smile on my face. My lawnmower would not start because there was no spark. I bought a new ignition coil, no spark. I bought a new spark plug, no spark. I went to the internet and found Steve's video on the stretched engine brake cable. I noticed that for some reason I parked the mower with the engine brake disengaged. It must have stretched the cable and would not release the spark mechanism. I followed Steve's instructions and the mower instantly started with the first pull. My advice- do not store mower with stop bar tied to handlebar. Thank you Steve, you are the man! 😁😁

You identified the problem I have on my Husqvarna R52S series lawnmower with the Briggs & Stratton 625 series engine. The top part is easy to unscrew and adjust, the engine end that you show at 2,20 I have no idea how it comes out of its retaining metal clip and I don't want to force it and break the black plastic cap. Typical, Friday evening in Europe, no chance of any spares before Monday and trying to find away to shorten that inner cable so I can attack the jungle of a garden. Thanks for your help.

Thank you sooooo much. I was about to buy a new mower. I thought the problem was the stator. Saw this video and tried your advice. The mower started first pull. THANK YOU.

Hey Steve! First off, I'd like to thank you. I'm a Stihl small engine mechanic and your videos have been extremely helpful. (I definitely owe you a beer) I have a request for a future video. I have little experience with mowers, it would be amazing if you'd consider going over back firing issues and also mowers that start and run but won't restart. Thanks again for your small engine wisdom.

Steve you are the best! I’ve spent the last few days going crazy because I had (weak) spark, fuel and compression. Tightened up that cable and she fired up first pull, thank you!

My mower worked GREAT last summer, but when I pulled it out this weekend it wouldn't start. I checked the sparkplug and it looks almost new. I couldn't easily test for spark myself, so I don't know if this is my issue, but this is an easy thing to check. This video is AWESOME and it may have saved my mower. I can't wait for work to be done so I can go check this. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks, had to make a spacer for mine so I'd get enough pull. That ended pulling on the rope with no results.

Well, that's one situation that I haven't hit yet. Pretty much every mower that a neighbour brings me is bunged up due to ethanol, but now I am ready for that one time when I get a no-spark. Thanks Steve!
