Fixing the speedometer on my Honda S2000, which as you can see clearly reads too high. While traveling at a GPS verified speed of about 80 to 81 miles per hour, you can see the car’s speedometer is reading 87 miles per hour, significantly higher than the actual speed. This is a result of changing the final drive gearing in my S2000, but you could also have a speedometer reading incorrectly from putting on different tires or wheel sizes. To correct this, first you need to know how much your speedometer is off by. You want to travel at the highest legal speed you can near you, so that you can have an accurate percentage difference. In my case, driving at about 81 miles per hour shows a speed of 87 mph, so my car is reading about 7.4% high.
Next I’ve purchased a Yellow Box correction kit. These can be used for many different makes and models of vehicles, simply splicing into the speed signal wire, or by using a plug and play kit they provide, also available for many different brands. The first thing we need to do for the install is lift the front of the car up onto jack stands. The speed sensor for the speedometer is on the transmission for the S2000, so we’ll need access to it. Once underneath the car, unplug the sensor from the transmission, and plug in the new harness. There will be plenty of wire length for the Yellow Box to plug in, so at this point I pulled the connector out from under the vehicle to program it. Then plug in the Yellow Box.
Turn your ignition to accessory mode, and you should see some lights flashing on the Yellow Box. Once powered, the box will tell you what the current correction factor is, by flashing the red light. Short flashes represent a count of one each, and long flashes represent zero. In this case we have 1 flash, then four long flashes, meaning 1 0 0 0 0, or 100.00% correction factor.
My S2000 is reading about 7.4% high, so we want a correction factor of 107.40%. To program the box, hold both buttons for about 5 seconds, until both green and red lights flash. Now, by pressing the plus button, the correction factor will go up by 0.1 percent. Pressing the plus button 74 times will give us our 107.4% correction factor. You can also hold the button to speed this up.
After you’ve programmed it, wait for both lights to flash. This informs you the setting has been saved. Turn the car ignition off, and then turn it back on to check that the setting is correct. Once powered, the device automatically reads the current setting to you.
I’m simply choosing to zip-tie the Yellow Box for now, directly beside the transmission housing. The device comes with a 10 year warranty and is weatherproof, heatproof, and vibration proof, but make sure you don’t place it near your exhaust or extreme heat sources. With the device in place, it’s time for a test drive. As you can see the car now reads much closer to the actual speed, and is reading just slightly conservatively high, which I’m fine with. You could choose to fine tune at this point if you prefer.

factory does that for a number of reasons: it does give to the driver one unrealistic "feel" that the car is faster, acelleration is better because it hit the target early and also the fuel economy seems to be higher as you cover extra miles for your gallon, legally they can be up to 10 % off to up but not for down, so they do that to be in the safe side

LoL you should came to Poland. In Germany 5 year old BMW would have 150 000 km, but when the same BMW will ride (on tow truck) to Poland then the mileage will 'magically' drop to 40 000 km. We have 17 year old vehicles imported from Germany with the course of 150 000 - 200 000 km :D

does this mean that if you fit a different ratio differential and adjust the speed this way, since the ecu gets a separate reading the ecu will still be getting the incorrect speed for the odometer and you end up with 7% higher indicated mileage? :o
@deanrhodenizer938
@deanrhodenizer938 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for following through on this. Good idea to use the GPS instead of doing the math on the old and new final drive ratios as that would have caused you to retain any built in OEM based speedometer error. For now you know your speedometer reads just slightly high at 80 MPH - should help you stay out of trouble. Great video, thanks again.

That's all well and good, however bear in mind that virtually all speedometers have a built-in deviation. In my car I can read out the speed via OBD-II and it will match up exactly with the GPS (+/- 1 km/h). However the actual display is always reading 10% higher. If I were to fit a yellow box in my car to fix the speedo's deviation, I'd be throwing off the ECU, speed-dependent power steering and most importantly the mileage by 10%. That would for example make me about 13k km / 8k mi late for my timing belt service interval. So personally I'd set this yellow box to only compensate for what's changed (gearing or tire circumference), maintaining the factory default deviation on the speedometer.

What to do when a speedometer shows different misreadings depanding on speed? I.e. When I drive 50 km/h according to GPS, my speedometer shows around 56-57km/h, and this 5-7km/h stays the same from 30 to 140km/h, when I reach 160km/h, the measurement is spot on with GPS - straight up to 220km/h(max speed).

@MagicDartProductions
@MagicDartProductions 7 жыл бұрын
With how high the s2k's red line is that's normal. 5k is about 55% of his red line so in a normal car with a red line of about 6.5k it would be like cruising at about 3.6k rpm. That and his final drive gearing is much more aggressive than normal.
@SayMoreTaimoor
@SayMoreTaimoor 7 жыл бұрын
MagicDartProductions I think he means ouch to the fuel economy lol. At 80 mph in 6th gear in my unmodified S2000, I'm like at 4,000 RPMs already. While compared to the redline, that isn't that bad like you said, but fuel economy still kind of sucks regardless. Not that I bought an S2000 for fuel economy, but... You get my point lol.

You'll fine that most modern cars read at between 5% to 10% higher than actual, usually around 7% , (at least I know this to be true of Jap cars). Just got a 2008 Nissan Skyline 370GT and it's stock and reads just over 7% higher.. The 2000 Nissan Gloria Y34 I had before this read 5.7% higher than actual also..

Ignore it...As most of you know the whole planet is becoming a NANNY state. So if every car on the road had a speedo reading lets say at 100k's and the real speed being done is 95 all the cars would be running down the Highway at 95 so no one thinks any different. My 2016 Toyota Hilux Trayback reads 120K at 110 on the 3 GPS's I have put in it. My last car got to go down to Victoria and in 2 places on the main highway, there are overhead speed radars that let you know your speed as you go under them. So I asked a Police Officer that was managing a radar trap if he could check my speed well the GPS was right. So it is a standard thing with cars in the last 10 years that they run off the factory floor with a speedo that reads faster than the real speed. TRY for yourself get a few folk together and set up a bunch of GPS and go for a drive in everyone's car --- you all just may get a shock.

The more you know: It is illegal in Germany for a speedometer to display too low speed, but it *is* allowed for it to show up to 10 % (+ an additional 4 km/h) too much so that in the worst case you're never driving too fast. So "correcting" it down might actually be illegal if you overdo it as tire pressure on warmer/colder days can invalidate your measurement. My car can supposedly only do 183 km/h, but I easily got it to "200" ;-)

The threads on your tires make up to 3% variability in the speedometer measurement, depending on whether your tires are worn out or not. You can account for all the things that impact the speedometer theoretically but it just doesn't make sense.

all these companies are out of hand. just find out the pulse per mile rate of your oem speedo, and get a gps controller to match for much less than any of these extremely overpriced speedo calibration tools or dealer cost. its a shame that people allow crooks like this to seriously over charge for such a simple product. also if you convert to a gps signal you never need to calibrate no matter what tire or gear you run again. BUY ONCE CRY ONCE.

a handful of car's, and most powerful sportbikes have programmed top speeds. Some of these vehicles are capable of higher speeds, but the computer "governs" their top speed to something lower. If your speedo read's low, the governer will think your going slower then you are, letting you reach higher top speeds. Generally this doesn't mean much to most people, because sportbikes being limited to 300 km\h (186mph for you muricans!) really doesn't impact most riders of such bikes or car's with similar limits. the only time you see much removal of governers is with scooters, specifically the ones that are supposed to be limited to 60km\h and don't require a motorcycle license.

You change the gear that drives the cable. Different tooth counts change how the speedometer reads. This whole procedure is entirely unnecessary though. This can be done for free if you know the steps to take. Newer cars can be changed with an OBD2 tool. Older cars with electrically driven speedometers will have a procedure such as grounding a test pin, and cycling the ignition key, then adjusting the calibration using the odometer select and reset buttons.

My Renault Twingo is showing 5% too much, but the odometer is spot on, so the speedometer is deliberately lying to me. So if I correct the speedometer, the odometer is wrong. Our next car has a camera reading the signs, and alerts when "speeding"; however the reading is high. That's why we have queues and dangerous overtakings on roads where drivers think they drive the speed limit, but actually are up to 10% under.

Such simple kits doe not help in the non-linear misreadings which are in many GM cars. And you may adjust the linear misreading by the OBD interface. it's something like "tire diametre" with several digits. But then you still have the "2nd offset" kicking in at about 40mph, and then the 2nd additional factor kicking in at about 70mh, redering everything before completly useless. I had the 30mph "spot on", but on 130mph was still reading 155... FSCK!

I was expecting some whiteboard calculations to show the math behind the changes the tires and differential caused, or maybe an ECU tune. No explanation of the circuitry or how the components work either (probably mostly a microchip, so the logic in it). At least wear a Speedo (preferably over your pants) if you're going to do this type of video with extreme click bait links.

Finally a video that goes straight to the point and gives an easy fix. Other videos start rambling nonsense for 4 minutes at grandpa speed 🙄. Now got to go find such yellow box specific for my car 😀. Edit: i see the yellow box is 100$. I guess I'll just remember the offset which is free. Edit2: I just ordered a GPS speedo for 20$ from Ali, stick that on the dash, job done🙂

Isn't there a way to do it through a tuning device? It had to do with finding the diameter of your... drive wheels? Idk, something like that, and programing it into a tuner of some sort and it'll do its thing through the OBD II port. Is this to fine tune it?

Any clues wnat to do if speedometer from OBD2 (with torque app) reads 60 (mph, km/h) and onboard computer shows 64? I don't mean GPS speed, though. BTW, I have factory recommended tires on my automobile. Also, cruise control is on, so no errors there, driving on a flat surface, no wind, etc. Please advice.

well I'm in a predicament.... My analog speedo reads 100kmph, the digital speedo reads 96kmph (yes there is both an analog speedo and a digital one that I can scroll through to on the dash) and my phone's gps speedo then reads ~90kmph...... wtf do I do, is the analog signal from the transmission, and the digital signal from the abs system I'm assuming? Tires are factory size but the front tires are worn and the rear tires are brand new, could that have something to do with the different readings on the analog and digital readings? pls help, thought I have been doing 120 on the dot on highways but I've really been doing like 110 and when im going 130 im really going like 123kmph....

Hi! Was your speedometer falling up and down as well? I took it to the shop and the guy connected it to my vehicle as I'm driving it. He said my speed wasn't matching his tablet scan that was connected to my vehicle to read what was wrong with my vehicle. They replaced the sensors on my transmission.but my idle still drops as I'm driving. Do you know if I could use a yellow box to fix the issue?

1) my speedometer shows 65 at real 60 km/h and 104 at real 100 km/h, so it's non-linear error, no way to correct by yellow box. 2) how about mismatch between speedometer reading from gearbox and speed signals from ABS sensors? can it lead to strange effects?

Yeah, mine truck is not off by a percentage, it is off by 15 mph at 35, 55, and 75, so I don't know what is up with it, at really low speeds it's correct, but at around 20 it shoots up. It does have an injector out, so it's only got 7 cylinders at the moment.

I bet one could do such fix with a cheap Raspberry Pi or Arduino. It are just I/O signals. Connect the transmission sensor to one of the I/O pins of the Arduino, code something to interpret the signal to a number, apply correction, then convert the corrected value to digital again on another I/O pin on which you connect the original wire which goes to the car's computer. Best way to start out is by hooking up an oscilloscope to the original situation so you can see all the voltages and timings.
