Cleaning the black contact pill of the rubber button sheet is both necessary, and causes it to degrade, as the outer layer of graphite gets carried away and the button conductivity is reduced. There are various ways described to counteract the degradation, like coating with a special carbon contact compound, rubbing a pencil into it, gluing on a layer of metal foil... these all sort of work for a while but all have their drawbacks. I think i prefer the pencil for the time being.
