I can't believe it. Went through all official guides and manuals about troubleshooting and after a day of slight panic and annoyance, the second solution solved the issue. Never underestimating a KZbin tutorial again

unplugging the TV and then taking batteries out of remote for 60 seconds then plug in and put batteries back; Worked like a charm... I was ready to go buy a new remote... You saved me money thanks.

It didn't work even with new batteries. The camera test where the emitter light is supposed to show red didn't work, either. I guess a four year old remote seldom used is still a cheap POS. Ugh.
