How to fix a pulled out rocker stud - I'm DONE working on this

Have a Rocker Stud that's coming out? Before you spend money on New heads or Screw in studs, try out this method of Pinning the Stud in place. Bonus: You get to see me fail.

Happens a lot when running high lift cams with pressed in studs..I've repaired them with your method also have brazed a few with brazing rod and an oxygen acetylene torch but there aren't many of left that have brazing skills anymore.

Pull the pressed one out and tap a threaded stud in there

I like how you didn't put a rag or something over the push rod holes and oil return holes. Let all those shavings go down into the engine.

Best way is to have a vacume going right next to it when drilling

I had the same problem with bending push rods. It turned out that the pushrod guide hole was out of round and essentially the head was junk at that point. Hope this helps.

Check and see if there's 40psi in the tires - works for me

Didn't geet the whole picture, but looks like you changed out the heads then started having the stud and pushrod issue. Might check the replacement heads springs. The truck likely has a higher lift cam and the springs could be binding. When springs bind, they tend to either bend push rods and cause the rocker studs to be pulled out.

The whole thing was kind of a mess from the start ot was a used engine that had been previously messed with, i ended up scrapping it and ls swapping

I pressed them back in on the fly by just going ahead and pulling it out and taking a hammer and lightly pinging it to make small Barbs and then cleaning them both up pressing back in with loctite. I mean the correct way is to drill them and put studs in but if all you have is locked tight and a hammer it seems to work for about 15 years so far lol.

Why not just pull the heads and send them to a machine shop . It's best to have threaded studs inserted .

Did the nut on the rocker arm stud strip cause you were tappi on it to get stud back in place?

What size dowel pins did u use I’m having the same problem and also did they hold up pretty good

I'm not sure the size just pick one the size of your drill bit. They held up but can't give you long term because I pulled the engine

After you installed the rocker and started it, I saw something go flying. Also when rods bend is from the rocker not being lined up. I think any offset can bend those rods. Is the rockers too loose? Maybe take your feeler gauge and measure your clearances on the other good rockers. Maybe some washers to tighten up clearances. If not new rocker platform bolts. Good job ill buddy.

Thanks man! I appreciate the advice. I hadn't set valve lash yet but it seems like as soon as I got this one tightened down close it would bend the push rod

@@JovaniDanteGriego well if you need to open it up again I would clean the lifters with parts cleaner. Maybe it is stuck. My tiburon has a tick from dirty lifters. I think the lifter is under those rods, if its stuck, and the rocker slams into them i would imagine the rods would be your weakest point. Check those lifters, would be my next step.

Agreed!! I am fighting this on a old hunting suburban. I have about got it lined out after 3 bent pushrods, 4 pulled rocker studs. I have finally started warming the head at the intake guides to loosen the valve stems up and quickly getting the engine running again and driving it. I poured a gallon of Lucus 2-cycle oil and 2 large bottles of Marvel Mystery Oil in with the tank full of OLD gas and drove it for 30 miles without letting it cool off and its getting better. Still have one cylinder to install a screw in rocker stud on before its back at 100%. What a mess this new gas makes of these older rigs!!!
