Great job! FYI, the reason there is an inside and outside hole for the wheel retaining pin is for those that do a lot of turning, the machine will operate as if it had an "open differential" and they won’t be fighting a “locked” drive axial as they try to make turns

Not going to lie I wish I had found your channel last year! I bought the exact machine and the guy before me has bolts in for the pins. Paid 150$ for it because the guy thought it was leaking gas out of the block but it turns out it was just a fuel line cracked and I thought I had won a little lottery but I guess I will see what happens when I get it running if the gear is pooched. Any tips on how to break a seized/rusted auger free from the auger axle? I was able to get a pry bar in and break one side free, but the other side won't give. I bought a lower HP Craftsman for parts for my 9hp/26in snowblower that I completely destroyed the auger blades on.

same happened on my 9/26 axle is froze to one side auger. sheer pin ( nut and bolt) were rusted and froze. had to drill it out but still cant get axle to spin as it is froze to blade impeller. gear box and rest of machine is functioning fine. Hate to tear it down if I dont have to.

The left tire axle pin goes on the outside for light snow and ease of maneuverability according to the manual. I have mine through the inside as you were saying so both tires are gripping.
@EliminatorPerformance2 жыл бұрын
Yes like the old pozi traction on muscle cars, I find it better when it's locked, and the snow/ice makes it easy enough to turn the snowblower. These are quite small units anyway, and I find them easy to maneuver.

I have the same exact model Craftsman 9HP, 26", so this was a fantastic and invaluable video on rebuilding the gear box. I've learned so much and hopefully repaired my machine on my own. I was unable to join the 2 sides of the snowblower alone, until the augur lever was depressed, which I may not have done, if you hadn't explained that. There is one thing. After everything was back together and tested, I noticed the augur blades kept turning, even when the augur handle was not depressed? Is there something I missed? Thanks again, I'm definitely a subscriber!

Likely the cable for auger set with too much tension so the brake isn't engaging, or it's the belt that's too tight. Also check to make sure the idler return spring is still connected. If not, it won't pull back the idler pulley enough and the belt will stay slightly engaged.

@@EliminatorPerformance hello we’ll I finally bought some grease 90 weight small amount wasn’t sure if I needed a large amount. When I got home today I checked the Aguer housing by removing that Square bolt. And I stuck a Q- tip into it. The thick grease was at the beginning of the opening it was like a dark Yellow or mustard color. It was packed. I tried to add a bit. Which came back out. So I said ok and secured the bolt nut back. Eliminator what I having trouble now is with a few things, 1. Getting it to run, 2. Getting 1st. C n 2nd, gear. 3rd and reverse I got good. 3, adjustment or the 2st n 2nd gear. Big storm heading my way tonight into tomorrow. I was able to get my Mechanic fix the skid he put a piece of steel on bottom same size as the other one. The 622 Power Trhow 6 ho from the year 2000 sat for. 6 years with the gas on. That carburetor on the Tecumseh was caked with fuel and the bowl was not silver more like chocolate in color. I was able to clean it all out and put it back and cleaned the idle jet. Today it finally started after trying for ten minutes. It stall when I try to ideal the machine what do you suggest Thanks Bud. Any suggestions
@EliminatorPerformance3 жыл бұрын
Another carb clean is most likely needed if you didn't flush the tank and blow out the line, other than that, if it's adjustable carb, give it more fuel by unscrewing the bottom jet and the drive can be adjusted by either moving the rod further down, or further up, it should be threaded, think of it like a tie rod on a car
@johnhouli34503 жыл бұрын
@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks, I have adjusted the rod earlier. Not a adjustable it’s a fixed jet. When blowing snow is the engine throttle on full speed or 3/4.

An excellent video! Thank you very much! I do have a question however... In part two, when you're reassembling the gearbox, the worm gear is already covered with a white grease. What type of grease is the white grease and why why did you need to use it instead of just the STENS "00" that you used in the rest of it?
@EliminatorPerformance5 жыл бұрын
It's a Lithium grease, I reused some of the old stuff that didn't have metal shavings in it, it works good too

Thank you very much for the speedy response! I currently have mine disassembled for the exact same problem. WOW, THANK YOU!!! What detail you provide. I just picked up a MTD 8x26" blower with a busted auger. Not ever done one before I'm waiting for the gear box. This is a 1994 blower, very well cared for. There is NO gasket between the two halves. Seems odd, but do you know if back then they were built that way? I was given a CUB CADET 28" blower, big hole in the block. For my limited knowledge all else appears good. I was looking to get a predator replacement engine, trying to keep cost down as much as possible. I want to give one away to help someone out. A friend has a TORO, tracked 3 stage. It has set outside for at least 3 years. The thing started right up, runs a little rough but runs. It probably doesn't have 4 hours on it. The linkages are messed up, due to setting out no doubt. It doesn't seem to go through the snow worth a crap, it blows and in forward gears goes fine but a wheeled unit seems to have a lot more balls than this does. How do the gearing work? Are they like a pressure on the pulley? Never owned a blower so have zero experience in this area. Again, I thank you for your knowledge, and for taking the time to produce such high end instruction!! Dave in Vermont, 100% off grid for 43 years and counting

My John deer riding mower with 44 inch blower has an issue. It started making a loud grinding noise. I thought it was the gear box but when I took it apart the gears were ok. Must have been a rock between the impeller and body. Anyway I did find a few small metal bits in the gear case but I cant figure out what its from. Looks like it used to be shaped like a hollow tube. Could this be a pin spring? I have no idea where it would go. Anyone know

Hello, thanks for the video. My machine has that damaged part. I don't know what brand it is, it says Stanley 30” but I'm looking for that part by that brand and I can't find it. Could you help me?
@scottWILSONvtbeekeeper4 жыл бұрын
Does brass shavings in the housing indicate worn gear? The second stage spins powerfully but the first stage is anemic (almost like I could grab the first stage with my hand and stop it). The worm gear looks good and the brass gear has all the teeth with almost all of them the same height and looks similar to the new one in the video. Could they be worn down enough that a good positive meshing with the worm gear is not occurring? Also, there was a bent shear pin that I had to hammer out.
@EliminatorPerformance4 жыл бұрын
Yes most likely this is a sign of damage. If you have a bent shear pin, it means it didn't shear and transferred some of that force.
@scottWILSONvtbeekeeper4 жыл бұрын
@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks, so essentially there was a meshing but not sufficient enough to maintain proper rotation.
@EliminatorPerformance4 жыл бұрын
Yes most likely. These augers spin incredibly fast so you have to have everything perfect. The worm gear is slightly dished to allow the worm shaft to rotate, usually the damage starts in the middle of the worm gear. Normally the worm shaft (hardened steel) doesn't get damaged, but sometimes I've had to take a file to them to clean them up

I use the identical bench and set up you use. Then I drop the other half of the case down and tighten it , it locks up. Could the gear be the wrong one. I got the number from my manual. There is a little play with the worm gear in its slot. I will watch the video again. All parts are present and in the correct place.

@@larrylacey5919 I mean it's possible it's the wrong gear, maybe too big, but if it spins with 1 half on then it should spin with 2.

I have a Stanley 45" snow blower model 45SS. I need the worm gear inside the gear box, I cannot seem to find the part number. Does anyone know who makes the parts for Stanley? or the part number?

Hi Started the Ariens project. Ran into a problem hope you can help. Got the pulley off the shaft with 3 bolts/nuts. Removed the hub secured to shaft with a woodruff key and hex set screws. Can't get the Woodruff key off the shaft; Any ideas how to get this off so I can slide the shaft through the bearing?

Hammer and a drift punch or some kind of chisel! Put a rag over it so it doesn't go flying across your shop.

@@EliminatorPerformance Hi. Tried that today and on the second blow, the key flew into the air. Pulled out the auger assembly only to find out the gearbox housing was cracked. Inside, the gear was ground up what looked like gold dust. Will look for a used housing somewhere. Strange, a reputable company like Ariens would use a vulnerable aluminum / cast housing. A real weak spot, to say the least. My 34 yr old John Deere is cast iron. Appreciate your help; Thanks again. JIM

Thank you! We purchased ours from STENS I believe, it's a distributor here in Canada, but you need a business account. Amazon is usually good, if not try a local parts store.
