It's now 2 1/2 years later, April 25, 2020 and I got a generator to quit surging and it was surging badly.... Taryl IS the gift that keeps on giving. Like Taryl showed, I cleaned the low speed jet on an old 10 hp Tecumseh and now it's running like it should. Thank you so much.

I have to say that this works. I’m a success story. I own a power washer with a Honda engine like the one on the video. It has been surging for a long time. I used the micro drill bits that Taryl recommended. I went up two sizes (one size didn’t seem like enough) and the engine no longer surges. However, it now runs on full throttle regardless of the position of the throttle lever. Therefore, I believe that I over did it. Use the next size up and no more and then run the engine for awhile. Then, if you need to use a larger diameter drill bit you can do so but you can never go back.

Wow! Been trying to figure out my surging issue for a while and I’ve looked at a lot of really complicated “solutions” that, as a Harry homeowner, did not look like a solution to what I thought was or should be something easy. My gen is fired up once a month at least and run with load occasionally on ethanol free fuel. When it started acting up last summer I thought no way this thing should be having an issue. You sir gave me the easiest to try solution and it worked like a charm. However, I just used some really tiny stranded wire and kept adding more until no more would go. Backed off one wire and spun around a bit with some cleaner. Put it back in and we are in perfect working order! Literally took me 10 minutes and most of that was trying to find the wire. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!
@raymondgarafano86044 жыл бұрын
Hello Mr. Paul Hood, yup maintenance runs are great, it's a bitch to need that gen-set and NOT not ready when u need it. I just did that the other day, started right up, then of course I plugged in a load, she is NOT happy if not plugged into! I mean the gener8or. like old car generators ( not alternators ) they can lose that bit of residual magnetic field and she will not put out. Lots of people buy a gen b4 a big storm is coming only to find they will not have any luck an and up getting a gen-set not as big as needed. Read the directions once an after the gen did its job, the turn the key, engine shuts down an all is jolly in bloody old England! not really though, carb's fulla gas and in a month if that long, carb will b so gunked up the engine will NOT run. I will shut gas off and let engine eat up whats left in the carb or shut off the switch, grab a beer or two and when things cooled off drain the carb.

thanks, teryl dactyl. i have been fighting "choke only" on a scott mower running the l-head 16hp briggs since spring. the damn machine was garage-kept, all these years, with one-half summer of use on it since it was bought new. i rebuilt the carb, boiled it, nothing worked. finally removed the low-speed adjust screw, got a very fine guitar string, and started poking...sure as hell some kind of tiny insect had glued mud and crud together inside the passage to the venturi. tough as a chunk of concrete, but it finally gave-way and the wire went through....gee, now the low speed screw adjustment actually works and the machine runs p-e-r-f-e-c-t-l-y. thank you, "wise one".

My Harbor Freight 4000 watt generator was a classic case. You had to play with the choke to stop the surging. I opened the jet one size from a 77 to a 76 problem solved. Thanks Taryl.

Very informative. Thanks Taryl. I own a John Deere LA105 Riding Lawn Mower purchased in 2008. It has a 19.5 HP engine Model #31P677-0132-B1 with Nikki carburetor, In 2012 the engine began to run rough and surge so I rebuilt the carburetor but the engine still ran rough and surged. The number stamped on the original carburetor was 792345. I installed a new carburetor but the surging continued (does not stall or backfire), After trying to adjust the carb settings I finally gave up and learned to live with it. I finally relegated this mower to a utility tractor for towing a yard trailer around my property and bought a new mower. Recently after reading many posts and watching countless videos related to the surging Briggs and Stratton engines, I decided to give the old John Deere another try after it has sat unused for a year. Here are the things I have done thus far. Removed the gas tank, empty old fuel and cleaned the tank thoroughly. Replaced the fuel filter and fuel hoses/clamps. Replaced the spark plug Replaced the air filter I started the engine and it continues to surge at all speeds does not stall or backfire. In the choke position it runs for a brief time then chokes down (stalls). With the engine running I checked for air leaks around the carb and manifold connections by spraying carb cleaner and listening for changes in engine performance. No leaks noted. Replaced carburetor with new Nikki aftermarket Stens #520-002 substitute for Nikki #594605 I started the engine and it continues to surge at all speeds does not stall or backfire. At this point I returned to watching online videos related to my problem which seems to be very common. I checked the governor setting by placing throttle wide open and checking for play at the governor arm and found none. I still have the fuel pump to consider and I am considering replacing the carb linkage and governor spring in the event the linkage/springs are possibly bent or stretched, but other than that I believe I have checked off possible external problems. Am I missing something here? I would greatly appreciate your expertise in solving this problem. David

Hi Taryl, My carburetor was surging, I did your fix to make the jet a little larger, I used oxy tip cleaners. Ran Perfect!!!. for 20 minutes then dead stalled, I started it again and it started surging again. I pulled out the jet loosened the bottom of the carby and drained float chamber put air pressure in fuel line and Jet hole ...assembled ...ran perfect for 20 minutes. After repeating this several times. I completely stripped and cleaned the carby , and disassembled the fuel pump and cleaned the hell out of it. Ran for 20 minutes then dead stall and surging after restart. Choke helps a bit but never gets to full RPM. I'm Guessing that the last reason might be condensation in the fuel tank? I will be inspecting and emptying the fuel tank today. Love your show You are a genius. And soul brother. I am running a 17.5hp Cheong Yeng 620cc Briggs copy.

THANKS TARYL, that advice fixed my surging Tecumseh 10HP !! The only warning that you might add to your advice is that the low speed brass jet has a step in it. Mine went from 1mm to 0.5mm. Thank you for your help. I have a 1988 John Deere 318 garden tractor that was surging for years. I couldn't find any useful information out there on what the problem may be . I was actually going to replace the Onan p218 with a Vanguard engine . Today I removed the top of the carburetor and pulled the jet. I did not have drill bits small enough so I used a piece of copper wire strand and sure enough there was a blockage in there. Put it all back together and the tractor ran quite smooth without the choke on. Even when I turned the throttle all the way down it stayed smooth and even. I don't know how many hours are on the engine being that the hour meter broke years ago with over a thousand hours on it but it sounds better than it has in years.

Enjoyed your video. Just wanted to put it out there that if you're having fuel starvation issues like I was, and you figure it's the coil because it only happens after it warms up, then it runs great after you replace the coil, but then the issue comes back oddly, then you dig into the carb and it all seems fine and clean, and adjusting the jet doesn't seem to help... check your fuel cap vent for being plugged. But the best way to do all this would be to avoid all that other stuff and unscrew the cap first. If it runs fine, don't worry about the coil or the carb. Lessons - they come hard sometimes.

Love ur videos, very educational. In the process of watching all. My skills very limited. Learning a lot despite will never attempt most of what u do. Five suggestions. Dangerous to move blade or many other parts due to compression. Disengage clutch or remove spark plug. Put hand at output of exhaust when running and check for oil sputter. Intermission with your great skits. Most important: Add a stuffed animal, puppet of the bear and bobble head of you to your store. I am going to post this part of this comment to every one of your videos until you comply. I feel guilty for getting all this education at no charge. Thank you for sharing.

@Taryl Fixes All Keep this trick I devised years ago for the future when you do carbutator cleaning.. Try this... Heat the plastic tube from the carb cleaner spray with a lighter (about 1/4-1/2 inch from the end. Then pull on each end of the tube to stretch it. This makes the outer/inner tube diameter smaller and more of a pin point. When the melted plastic solidifies, use small wire nippers or nail clippers to snip the tube at the smallest diameter that still provides flow when spraying. The cleaner comes out like a pin point pressure washer and the shrunken plastic tube end fits snugly inside whatever port your spaying thru. You can also do the same to create 90 degree angles in the plastic tube to spray sideways inside long venturi tubes. (Like idle circuits) I used to make/keep custom tubes around for these situations. Hope this makes sense.

I have a 2013, 48", 24 HP Kohler, Husqvarna with 292 hours on it. It started surging badly at anything but full throttle, but I found a very quick fix; CRC Throttle Body and Air Intake Cleaner. With the engine running at full throttle, I removed the air cleaner and sprayed the fluid into the intake. The engine hesitated, but recovered as I stopped spraying. Did it a second time. At a reduced throttle setting, the surging was gone! I've tried fuel system cleaner in the gas tank before and that has not stopped the surging. CRC is worth a try if your engine is surging!

This worked for me, a new engine surging under load, I was going to increase the jet hole size, but then I found the hole was too small and did not match the stamped size on the jet. Drilled it out to the correct size in mm and fixed it, runs great now.
