If you're running the latest 18.1 iOS update and are running into CarPlay issues, one other thing to try is: Go to Settings --> Screen Time --> Content & Privacy Restrictions --> Allowed Apps & Features and make sure that CarPlay is turned on

Fantastic video. I do IT support for a living but for the life of me couldn't re-connect wireless CarPlay (I had a 'dumb' car up until recently). In my case, it dropped mid-drive and refused to reconnect. Volkswagen's documentation is poor. Walked away after 30 mins of troubleshooting, and came across this video which lays out steps very clearly. Back up and running on first re-attempt. Much appreciated.

Great video, thanks for doing this! I tried your suggestions and also checked the Allowed Apps you pinned in the comments but my issue still keeps happening. When I open up the built in camera the iPhone 16 pro iOS 18.1 starts flickering and my Honda CRV screen starts flickering and my FM radio starts going in and out. It does not do this in photo mode just video. I’ve tried other third party camera apps with my CarPlay and they work perfectly fine. Also if I open up the Google app the flickering happens again in the car not on screen. I also connected my phone to my dad’s truck and the same thing happened. Do you have any suggestions by chance? 🙏🏻☺️

It seems like some of the latest releases has yet another glitch that Apple didn't catch before the release. A possible fix over and above the ones I've listed.. go to Accessibility --> Vocal Shortcuts Delete any shortcuts that you've created and make sure any Vocal Shortcuts are fully disabled

Do you think maybe this is a software issue similar to the macro 4k at 24 fps that Apple needed to fix in iOS 18.0.1? I had that macro video glitch on my iPhone 16 pro as well but the update fixed it so that was great however I’ve had this CarPlay video glitch since iOS 18 right when I got my iPhone 16 pro. The odd thing is my iPhone 15 pro works just fine. My friend’s iPhone 16 pro max had the same CarPlay video issue but today the 18.1 fixed it after he did your 2nd suggestion in the video of forget the device. I tried it 3 times on mine because I was so confused as to why it worked on his but not mine. I did contact Apple support (multiple times about this issue) but this is what they said today “Since that issue seems to be connected to CarPlay, the issue might actually more related to that than the Camera.” I’m not sure what else I should try 🤷🏼‍♀️😿

At this point it does sound like it's just another Apple bug. Reach out to support again and submit a bug report if you haven't yet developer.apple.com/forums/thread/712889 If the issue does end up getting solved it would be great to know what the fix was.. and if I come across something else I'll make sure to circle back!

Yes, for sure I will let you know if I figure out a fix and I am glad to hear you will circle back here too! I'm a bit worried Apple doesn't really know about this bug since most people probably don't use video when connected to CarPlay but I sometimes create travel videos with my dogs and cats. I'm not filming while I am driving but I do film as a passenger or when parked. The iPhone 16's sure have had a lot of built-in camera bugs. Thanks again for trying to help, I appreciate it!

Hey Steve, You're amazing, no doubt but still having a problem with my 2018 MB GLE350. I can get on Carplay if I'm wired USB C Data to USB A Iphone 16 Pro Max directly. However, I prefer a MagSafe holder and charger which has the USB A plug in on MagSafe. For some reason, maybe because not able for wireless connect, I cannot get CarPlay to function. Any ideas? Thanks Mario! I don't think the GLE lineup got wireless CarPlay until the 2024 models... You'll knows your car supports wireless CarPlay when you first connect the phone. Try the step where you delete your phone from the vehicle and the vehicle connection from your phone's bluetooth AND Settings --> General --> CarPlay, then re-connect. If a CarPlay connection message comes up without being plugged in over USB, then yours is wireless. But.. pretty sure wireless wasn't available in the 2018 GLE

But for some reason, some are saying that the wireless Carplay was available even to 2016 so I wasn't sure and was hoping that because I couldn't get my iphone to connect by wifi at home in my car maybe that had something to do with my difficulty. I'm considering one of those wifi dongles for Carplay. What are your thoughts about those?

You're welcome! Some Mercedes models had wireless in 2016 but it was a slow rollout across every model. I haven't found a wireless dongle that works well consistently so I haven't recommended one yet

Renault Clio 2021. Worked fine with my iPhone 13 Pro. Now on iPhone 16 Pro. Worked for a bit with USB A to USB C adaptor and then the regular Apple C to C. On 18.2. Now it does not want to connect no matter what I tried. Tried all the steps including the pinned one. Tried changing cables including a USB A to USB C without the adaptor. Will try the beta 18.3 and see if this fixes the issue.

If you've tried it all, sounds like an iOS bug at this point. If you haven't already, notify apple support of the bug so that they can look into it - because it seems like every time they roll out an update some settings that CarPlay requires seem to get disabled

VPN USAGE!!! My personal connection issue simply boiled down to one singular issue, VPN usage; when connecting iPhone to car, temporarily disable your VPN through its own app (in app), (NOT iPHONE VPN setting in SETTINGS). Once your device displays successfully on your vehicles screen, simply toggle your VPN back on (in app) and you’re good to go! I know, a pain, but it works. I only managed to figured this out after countless hours of troubleshooting - not giving up! I believe Apple will hopefully rectify this in a future patch, as many users are encountering these similar issues on a myriad of different vehicle models and makes. Good luck 😊

Hi Steve, i have Iphone 15 pro, my car play used to work on my car. Out of nowhere it stopped. BMW even thought it was a radio, which they replaced and it still did not work . Sounds like it's either a wiring or module issue if things aren't working.. Have someone else check out the install to make sure wires weren't crossed but the unit may not be compatible if things aren't working properly

I have just installed the elite car box 3.0 and got it to work okay until a day later i was driving and the you tube just cut off. I went back in and it was loading you tube then cut right back off. I noticed that it was kind of warm so I let it cool down. turned the car off went in the store came back and I have not been able to boot it up in my car since. That's going to be the box itself giving you trouble.. I haven't recommended an streaming box yet because I haven't found one that works consistently. You can try a screen reboot but you'll probably have to contact the manufacturer to either diagnose or get a replacement unit

If nothing in this video worked there are really only 3 other options for the Trax.. 1. Try a few start/stop cycles, turning the car on and off a few times 2. Soft reboot the screen by pressing and holding the phone button on the steering wheel for 10-15 seconds 3. Book it in for a screen replacement. I came across a forum post a few months back where some Trax owners have had connectivity issues with their screen and the only fix was to have the dealer replace the whole screen

Absolute nightmare on my 2024 Audi A5. Some days it works perfectly but then others it’s so frustrating. My iphone 16 pro just wont connect to Apple Car Play now.. Weird as the toggle for carplay is on. Music plays through the speakers and navigation works but just no apple carplay. I was able to use Waze and Audi Google Navigation simultaneously but now they cancel each other out😢

It can only be used on the centre screen if that makes sense. Hence why i set the route on Audi Google Maps in dash display and Waze on the middle screen.

I have a 2021 hyundai kona SE and i’ve been having issues with my carplay for a while. it’s wired car play and no matter the phone or cable (not sure if they’re charging or data cable) my carplay never stayed connected the entire drive. it’ll randomly disconnect and if i hit a big bump its disconnect and reconnect when it feels like. tried to go to hyundai and they wanted to charge me $250 just to tell me what the issue was. any advice?

Could be a USB wiring issue.. but a few easy things you can try first.. 1. Soft screen reboot. Follow this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpmXpGiOgcx2o68 2. Replace the cable and get one that is a manufacturer original, not a dollar store replacement ;) If that doesn't work.. you can try disconnecting the battery for 5-10 mins and see if that does it. But if it's constantly disconnecting and reconnecting there might be something up with the wiring of the port itself

If you're comfortable doing that yourself it's doable but usually best to leave it for a tech to do. If there's still warranty coverage on your car you can try to just go through a warranty claim

Have you tried a soft reboot by pressing and holding the volume power button for 10-20 seconds? If you've tried other options in this video only other thing I could recommend to try is to pull the battery or perform a full screen factory reset

@@CarsWithSteve Hello, yes I tried the screen reboot and I made sure CarPlay is on under privacy and content restrictions. I also connected to WiFi to see if I needed an update but it said my unit is up to date.

Curious.. has it ever connected over wireless? I know for the 2018-2022 models, there was a wireless CarPlay option available but it was a dealer installed option and would be a wired connection otherwise..

Good Morning, I'm hoping you can help. I bought an 08 Tacoma with a Lexxson 10.1 Android stereo in it, ($79 on Amazon). I have tried every way I know, and your options too, to get my Iphone 16 to connect and use wired or wireless Carplay. Any ideas that can help? Possible Firmware updates? (which I can't find) I've tried contacting Lexxson Customer Support... doesn't exist. Please help :). -MN Mitch

I just did some digging on that screen and while it's an Android based operating system it doesn't look like it actually has support for either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. You'd have to upgrade to another screen that has support for it!

@ thanks for the quick reply! The previous truck owner sent me over his Amazon car stereo purchase, that ad said it supported CarPlay and android auto, I was hoping there was some type of update, I have given up all hope and will be smashing this into 1 million pieces just for fun! Thanks again

HAHA no worries.. The Amazon listing for that screen is showing that it doesn't, but if you've already tried connecting over USB or bluetooth and the CarPlay message isn't popping up then it doesn't support it. Happy smashing!

Thank you for this! We have done everything possible and the recommendations here but it’s still not working! What’s weird is that older versions work fine- the salesman iPhone 11 and my husband 6 works/ but the service manager iPhone 15 did not work. I almost bought a new phone but the T-Mobile salesman’s phone did not work either . I have a 12. All updates done. So weird

The phone update was going to be the next recommendation but if that's been done already.. so odd that didn't fix it. You're using the data USB port and not the charge port right? edit: are both wifi and bluetooth enabled on your phone as well?

@@CarsWithSteve yes brand new cable - the service manager confirmed it was a data cable 😢- so disappointed because I spent so much on this car and they won’t honor any repairs - they basically are saying it’s a Apple problem

If it's just one phone that won't connect it's definitely a phone issue. Is your GV70 showing on your phone's settings under Settings --> General --> CarPlay?

I have a 2022 Tahoe LT I was wireless for years now it won’t work unless I plug my phone in I have forgot the device in the truck and on my phone and reconnected as well as checked my settings and it still won’t work unless I plug my phone in

Did you make sure to remove the car connection from Settings --> General --> CarPlay? Try pressing and holding the end call button on your steering wheel for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes black

I installed an aftermarket carplay unit in my 2013 RAM, I plugged my phone into the usb line, it connected up and worked fine, then it lost the connection, and I can't get it to reconnect.

Have you tried to reboot the aftermarket unit or is there a way to factory reset it? If the cable is older it could just need to be replaced too...

@@CarsWithSteve So it seems like the problem was with the connecting app in the software bundle. I forgot the device on my phone, reset factory defaults on the radio, and then had to re-authorize the app that connects to the phone. Back in business now. Thanks for your help.

wife and i both got new iphone 16 pro max phones and we both have aftermarket radios kenwood and Pioneers and been using carplay flawlessly for about 3 years with our older 13 pro max phones but now fast forward and apple decides to screw us previous phone owners on the cable connection. with these new phones neither will connect via wired carplay even with new data/charging cables. so i will be trying your suggestions tomorrow first thing. There is a workaround I've seen for some people.. Get a USB-c to USB-a adapter and then hook up through the USB-a port instead!

Have you tried a screen reboot? Press and hold the radio power button for 5-10 seconds. If that doesn't work, try working through the phone delete/re-add recommended in this video.. and if that doesn't do it you might have to do a full factory reset which will remove all existing settings or replace the USB cable with one that supports data transfer

Are you using an iPhone 14-16 on iOS 18? There's a pinned comment that goes over an additional step to try to get it to work. Has the phone ever connected or is it a new car to you?

I picked up a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander rental two days ago and it just would NOT connect to CarPlay (going to have the car 2+ weeks, so…). I had all the iPhone settings correct. The car linked my phone via Bluetooth so I could hear my music, receive calls, hear my Waze, etc. but I could not get the CarPlay screen. Car rental company was of no help. I had deleted all the previous users, but had not reset the car to factory settings. I tried to do the audio system reset, but the steering controls didn’t do anything…so, I took a risk and hit ‘reset vehicle to factory setting’, and that’s all it took. I plugged my XR in via the USB C cord (it showed using the USB 1 plug which is the USB C), and CarPlay popped right up on the screen. 🎉 I haven’t tried going back through the Bluetooth connection to see if that will work, but I don’t really care. My regular SUV needs the plug, so I’m fine to keep using it that way! Appreciate all your tips. I probably wouldn’t have had the guts to hit reset without your video. 😉

Have you connected over blueooth or USB? Most Hyundai cars need a USB connection for CarPlay but will stream audio over bluetooth no problem. If you're connected over USB you can try a soft screen reboot following this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpmXpGiOgcx2o68

@@CarsWithSteve, I recently traded in a Corolla that would occasionally go silent while a song was playing. I just unplugged and back in and it would correct. I just got into. Nissan Frontier that simply stopped connecting to the Car Play even when pressing that button on the vehicle screen. I went into phone settings and hit “forget vehicle”. I reconnected and it seemed to fix the issue. Both were wired connections

Odd.. I noticed a connection issue in the Altima when I had in a few months back but it only happened once and it stopped when I unplugged and plugged the cable back in. I'm in the Frontier in a few weeks so I'll see if I run into the same issue. I think it has something to do with the old Nissan system interface though because CarPlay works great across most makes and models I review

Still not working for me. I called GM and Apple with no resolution. This is after the 18.1.1 update. Suggestions? I’ve reset all phone setting, reset the infotainment to factory settings, new cable, forgot device. Apple and GM checked everything and it states it’s in working condition. I’m thinking about restoring to a previous back up iOS.

Mannnn I thought it was fixed. It was actually off completely. But, it just froze on me. This is what it’s been doing. It will connect (no issues connecting) then it will freeze and reboot. It continues this cycle.

Apple pushed a new update yesterday and it fixed the issue. Now I have 5000 new data cables lol. I’m in a 2019 Camaro 2SS with an iPhone 15 pro. Prior to the update, I tested on my son’s iPhone 11 and it worked perfectly. Then I saw the update fix, pushed that and it’s been working great since. Appreciate your video and commenting to help me troubleshoot!

My Mercedes GLB (2022) has a wired connection for Apple Carplay. It worked fine for almost all times until recently when I started getting error “car play cannot be connected” I tried everything i could 1) changed cable 2) updated my IoS 3) forgot my car on carplay and connected again 4) restarted my car, restarted my iphone both 5) cleaned the usb-type C port in the car Yet nothing works! I have no clue what to do now

I’ve done all of these steps, but my car (2019 Honda Civic Hatchback) keeps saying “ When safe, please confirm that your smartphone is connected to the USB port which has a smartphone icon on the lid” even though I am connected and my phone is charging. I’ve reset my phone network settings, rebooted my system, bought multiple different cables, toggled all the settings options- I’m at a loss.

Have you tried removing the phone from both the bluetooth screen and Settings --> General --> CarPlay? Do that, then restart your phone. Do a soft reboot on your car's infotainment screen and then reconnect

2025 NX 350 H. I have apple play. I can receive texts but can't send them. Siri just cuts off. I'm not sure how to fix it. Apple C.S. can't help.

Have you tried following the steps to re-connect the phone or soft reboot that I covered in this video? It could be a bug with the software, I've seen some forum posts of people having the same issue that was eventually solved with a newer iOS update. Make sure you report the issue to Apple because it's happened to people with various cars, iPhones and iOS versions in the past

That's definitely a phone issue and not a car infotainment issue. It sounds like your phone has a bug from the latest update... You can try rolling back to a previous release but reach out to Apple support, ideally starting a bug ticket

Ah.. that's a common Chevy issue. I hear from Trax and Equinox owners every now and then that they have problems connecting to CarPlay or Android Auto. You can try a soft reboot by pressing and holding the call hangup button for 5-10 seconds. If you've tried everything else in this video and the reboot doesn't work it's the actual infotainment screen itself that's the problem so you'd need to have it taken in for service. The fix in the Chevy world with constant CarPlay and Android Auto issues is usually for the whole screen to be replaced
