Too many belts in boxing! That is undoubtedly the most repeated complaint about the sport as a whole. Why do we have 4 "major" championship belts in each boxing division? How can we fix Boxing? CanTurki Al-Sheikh help boxing as a whole in addition to bringing us the big fights that fans most want to see?

So you think fighters should get more brain damage more than one time a year ? I bet those fighters who fight today are very happy you don't control the sport. You do realize the fighters from the past that fought consecutive times a year sometimes 5 or 6 times a year have massive brain damage now.

the issue isn't the fighters being afraid it's that boxing is a business, and in order to be a marketable product boxers have to compete with eachother. an undefeated fighter is significantly easier to sell, and without sh*tting on mayweather too much ever since he retired a lot of people have followed his example. because of that boxers without their 0 are looked over (unless they're already well established in the sport), and boxers with their 0 are carefully managed by their promoters in order to maximise their profitability. they aren't afraid of losing their reputation they're worried about losing their jobs, imagine if you worked in a factory and whoever made the least items in one day got sacked, it sucks

The problem is fighters would still cut to gain a competitive advantage which would have adverse health impacts. I think they need to take a look at what weights this fighters are rehydrating to and adjust the weight classes accordingly. That way you can have a weigh in before the fight and on the day, and know that fighters in that class aren’t dehydrating themselves

I literally started typing the same thing as you said that Turki backed by the Saudi state, to buy out all the sanctioning bodies, to abolish all the belt's, create one world rankings, one belt. This would also make Continental championships like the European championship far more important like they used to be when being a continental champ meant something.
@ChildSpaceMethod

With enough money, they don't need to buy out four belts, they can create a new one with such attractive conditions that it quickly becomes the de facto "belt to rule them all."

The thing is about mma is that sure there’s a ton of promotions like belletor and one but there’s only one premier organization that every mma fighter dreams of competing in and that’s the ufc so their champions are de facto the best of the best. Being the ufc champion is being the world champion none of the other champions actually hold as much weight as the ufc one. Is being the cage fighters world champion or the belletor world champion the same as the ufc champion ask Micheal Chandler or Paddy Pimblett the closest comparison to those belts would be a regional or international belts like the British or commonwealth belts. Who’s the best boxer in each weight class idk we have multiple champs and they actively avoid each other most of the time. Who’s the best mma fighter in each weight class well that’s the ufc champ most of the time and they have to defend their belt against the best all the time and if there’s another fighter who looks good in another promotion the ufc will snap them up and if they are good enough they will fight the ufc champion of their division, the champ can’t duck them look at Justin Geathje or Micheal Chandler In mma the best fight the best at each stage from regional promotions to the ufc it’s why losses don’t affect mma fighters the same as boxers. You can still be a huge star in the ufc or mma in general while losing some fights look at the fighters I named in boxing it seems like you lose a couple of fights now and your a bum. Look at Deontay Wilder he made it to 42 and 0 before he had a loss and it was his 41st fight when he fought a ex champion and that’s not out of place in boxing. In mma that type of record is almost unthinkable in mma people think Khabib Nurmagomedov’s record of 29 and 0 is practically untouchable to compare Khabib fought his first ex champion on fight 22 of his pro career and only his 6th fight in the promotion. In summary I think that’s one of the big problems in boxing you have 4 belts and unless the stars align no undisputed champ and each boxer and promotion and even the sanctioning bodies have no incentives to risk losing their belt to become undisputed

Saudi is making their own undisputed belt for when the winners of AJ vs Ngannou and Fury vs Usyk. Now it’s probably circumstantial BUT they DO have the money to make their own division and to make it 10x more valuable than the other organizations, thus making it the only one people would want forcing them to fight each other

It's also the fact that so many commissions and so many belts, on top of all of the rival promotional companies, breeds inactivity. The WBC and PBC worked together to allow Jermall Charlo to keep the WBC middleweight championship for close to THREE years without the threat of being stripped or enforcing a bout with his mandatory challenger and current interim WBC middleweight champion, Carlos Adames. Meanwhile, middleweight, historically the 2nd glamour division in boxing after heavyweight, is floundering in the aftermath due to the inactivity after following GGG's retirement and Canelo moving up in weight. Too many belts + "pay for play" + the lack of true enforcement of the rankings to create fights amongst top contenders = inactive sport and lowered fan interest / financial failure.

Usyk vs Fury took 2 years to realise, screwing unpopular fighters like Hrgovic who are now waiting in their 3rd year for title shot, and now they changed their mind and want 2 fights, meaning Hrgovic should wait another year, because why? Fury is popular, this is problem, not Hrgovic. Mandatories need to be enforced, Fury-vs Usyk should have happened 2 years ago. Its on them. Also if there was no mandatories, AJ would have never lost to Usyk, and Usyk would have never been champion.

NO I like the fact that there are lots of belts as it means much more to be unified or even undisputed champion. The reason boxing is doing badly is because ……. Wait for it ……….. deep breaths😤😤😤 BECAUSE THEY FIGHT ONCE OR TWICE A BLOODY YEAR. That’s why. It makes no difference if there was one belt or if there were a hundred belts if there no one fighting for them then we don’t really have a sport do we? Look at the heavyweight division and you’ll see how slow it is: Usyk: fights once a year Joshua: fights twice or three times a year Fury: fights once or twice a year Zhang: fights twice a year Parker: fights four times a year Wilder: fights once a year Ruiz jr: fights once every two years Hrgovic: fights twice a year So you can see the problem. To give us a division they should all be fighting four or five times a year (so Parker at least is delivering) But THIS is why there aren’t many die hard boxing fans. What is there to be die hard about? You can be a casual fan and not miss anything. Obviously things are getting better with the Saudi money but what’s going to happen between March 8th and the next Saudi card? Will boxers who have been on a Saudi card ever fight in a different country or will they wait it out so we have no boxing for months at a time just to collect the big cash prize? Anyway I’ve said my piece I hope you all agree with me and hopefully boxers (and especially belt holders) can fight more often. Until then it will NEVER be as popular as it used to be.

It’s all connected. The top fighters fight so rarely because they have the clout to sit on their alphabet title and wait for a money fight. I think I could more easily stomach four sanctioning bodies if: 1. Their rankings were on merit at Rummy says... 2. Get rid of special belts that are made for special event fights (that one is an obvious)! 3. Get rid of smaller belts like the Intercontinental or European Champ etc. Etc. (Those sorts of things are fine in the amateurs, but absolutely NOT for the pros in my opinion. 4. Try to remove certain channels and promotion companies from only staging fights with the fighters within their own promotion. (That's a BIG one). I mean really it seems as if I somehow stop the corruption of those points, then I allow it in the four sanctioning bodies to an extent... I wonder what the fighters themselves would say - as people who are at the pointy end of the world of boxing?

So I think 4 major titles can work (especially if we cut divisions down) but we must eliminate interim titles and secondary titles, and just use champion in recess in those instances. Other updates: - fix ranking systems - title eliminators that end up being mandatory challengers must be between #1 contender and someone ranked #2-#3. - mandatory unifications after 1 voluntary and 1 mandatory defense. - must face a mandatory after one voluntary unless unifying - for unified champions, start having #1 contenders from those sanctioning bodies fight in eliminators so the champion fights the winner to satisfy both sanctioning bodies. This stops fighters from sitting on rank waiting for a shot while also keeping the division moving.

It could be called ULTIMATE BELT (working title). Then, if a later study later finds flaw with the first result another ULTIMATE PLUS BELT could be given to the new guy so as to keep everything clear and not upset anyone.

I'd say corruption and incompetent judges is the biggest problem in boxing. But that has a lot to do with sanctioning mafias too.

The WBA is the original and still my favorite. To me, the only one that matters. With that being said, I agree that Turki Al-Sheikh is the only man who can fix all this and I hope that he does. Cheers!

Kudos to the Saudis if they continue helping make the fights, put on good cards, help sort this crap out. I miss the days of the guys who would fight anyone. Who was the last HW like that? I think it was Evander Holyfield. That’s how long ago it was.

Too many belts with not enough TV dates - it leads to what we've got at the moment - long periods of inactivity while the champions wait for a TV date.

One world championbelt per division, less weightclasses and it solves 90% of the problems. Only domestic level belts are allowed aside from the one championship belt, like European, brittisch, North America etc.

Imo first fix the rules: -get rid of hugging, 3 initiated hugs point deduction, 9 DQ. And without it the boxing is suddenly the most attractive combat sport 🎉🎉🎉 -make the other rules clear and make it clear when one supercedes the other, clear rules without referee's estimation -forbid BS fights like top 10 vs top 300, with some max difference in ranking -make official rankings (but let the sanctioning bodies pick their top 15 from the top 50 of the official rankings)

The 4 belts once every 4 years come together to make their champions fight each other to have an undisputed champion like the Olympics or Soccer World Cup. Then we wait another 4 years until it happens again.

WBO was called WBogus when it first came around in the boxing magazines but its probably the least annoying of the 4 now, WBA is the worst with its regular champion crap, WBC also has it horrendous belts like Franchise and came up wirh Bridgerweight! and the IBF is too strip happy.

A lot of the success the UFC, and MMA in general, has had is largely due to the structure of the sport. A lot of what the UFC is charged with (being a monopoly, etc.) is why there is better matchmaking. Boxing is not an inferior sport, it's just the business model.

I do understand, but perhaps I’ve romanticised the idea of becoming undisputed. I’m not sure why, but the idea of a champion fighting other champions to become the ‘champion of champions’ appeals to me

Last night i watched the Barrera-Tapia fight, and this topic was a major conversation piece because Barrera hadn't held a belt in a while but was still lineal at featherweight, and the IBF stripped Tapia. IBF wanted Tapia to pay $20,000 just so they could discuss if he could hold the belt, and he told them to kick rocks. HBO did a whole segment on it, with B-hop, Roy and Vernon talking about why fighters feel they need the belts. Some things never change.

I honestly don't mind the four belts or the amount of weight classes. I just wish unification fights happened a bit more and it wasn't so obviously pay to play. I hate the regular, silver, intercontinental titles though. It would be cool if more regions had proper regional titles like the British titles, and that they were treated with more prestige.

Part of the problem and reason there are 4 organizations is that it’s harder to corrupt all of them then just one. The issue should be tightening the belt on the organizations so that they only get fees when their champions fight thus moving the roster along and no rematch clauses, till the loser wins at least two other fights. I know there are still holes with this theory but it’s a start. Also Saudis are trying to buy the ring magazine belt and make that to only belt that matters

I actually like the four belts because a lot of guys don’t get a break so they don’t or would never end up fighting for a championship if it was just one individual belt and I watch boxing at least once a week if not more so I’d say I’m a diehard fan

There is 2,000 fighters worldwide that 220ish per weight class- there has to be multiple belt/sanctioning bodies to keep the ranking system going. They are place holders, and keep the boxing industry honest so Jon cash cows from Eastern Europe and Africa can get a title shot if they EARN It working their way up. Otherwise, champions will have to fight 10 times a year and once a cash cow gets the belt and babysits it all the other potential contenders don’t get a shot. Also, the espn/ring rankings are based on THOSE BELTS AND WHOS WON THEM 🤦🏽‍♂️

Thank You So Much For This Video. I Absolutely, and Totally Agree because #1. They Have Too Many Championship Belts. #2. Boxing Fans Only Get to See 3 Maybe 4 Fight Within a Year. #3. In Every Division of Boxing They Need Make More Top 10 Rank Contenders Fight More Often Even If Their Just Tune Up Fights. #4. Now Even Though MMA Is Gaining More Popularity It's a Good Idea To Have MMA Fighters Compete in Boxing Matches. Real Talk.!!!
