How to fix Code P0711 on a 2012 Hyundai Sonata

On the 2012 Hyundai Sonata, and some other year Hyundai's, an intermittent code P0711 indicates a problem with the internal automatic transaxle fluid temperature sensor. To repair this issue, you must replace the sensor, which is part of the internal electrical harness. This requires removal of the valve body in order to get the harness/sensor assembly out. Just did this - took me 2 days but it works - was able to drive, no codes, no leaks, although did lose the bolt that attaches the wire on top of the valve body cover but it’s not a necessary component in the operation of the transmission (it’s just to literally hold down the wire vs. being slightly on top of the valve body cover)

When you are putting transmission fluid in the 2012 sonata if you go in the back of transmission there is a 15/16 plug (same area as old style speedo cable) take it out for venting .

Would you know anything on p0722 2016? I’ll go in reverse perfect but won’t go forward, after disconnecting battery cable and connecting back I could drive it for a mile then just revs but won’t move forward. Any help?

My 2011 sonata has 130,000+ miles. When driving in automatic, my dash will display D (Drive), then it will switch to whatever number gear I am in. The speed sensor is located inside the transmission. I noticed the issue after I took it to the dealership for an ECM & Cluster update to the engine (20-1-006H) 053. This update was on the 14th of May. I noticed the issue on the 13th of June. It could have happened sooner, but I don't stare at the dash while driving. The dealership (Hyundai) charged me $140 for diagnoses. Then said the gear shifter needed replacing due to soda spillage. I changed it myself but did not resolve the issue. I even drove my car with the gear shifter unplugged. Same result. I have no error codes; I changed the fuse for the gear shifter. It stopped, then came back a day later. I am wondering if it could be the wiring from the heat. Where would I find the wires for whatever sensors may cause this issue? Any ideas? I can post a video to show the symptoms.

The bottom of my 2011 Sonata looks like that. I have a big metal frame in the way of the last bolt. The ball joint body frame.

It takes Dexron 6, No filter as this one is internal, and not replaceable.

So that's a Thai thing? Cool! I use the term "Nit-Noid" a lot. I don't remember where I picked that term up, but I use it in much the same vernacular meaning a bunch of various little things. HELP!!! I have a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2011. I have got issue with transmission. The car works perfectly for first 30-40 mins in the morning. After that the shifting problem starts. The car gear will go free/neutral after 15mph. There are no error codes on the scanner tool!!!

How do you replace the transmission fluid. Also I had my speed sensor change on my 2012 hyundai sonata hybrid and the code still says i need a speed sensor. Do the harness come with the speed sensor? I don't believe the guy change anything. Any suggestions please let me know. The dealership is trying to say I need a transmission. The car runs find until the warning sensor say stop and don't drive. I turn it off and then back on and it runs find. Some jerking in reverse. Any ideas on how to fix this problem please let me know. Hello Everyone! and Thanks for watching my channel! it's supposed to be filled with a "Lifetime" fluid (I use that term VERY loosely!) they don't make any provisions for regular fluid changes for that reason. However, when you pull that cover off, you get as much fluid out of the transaxle as you would if it had a pan on the bottom.

No, none at all. Just cleared any codes. I followed up with the owner recently as works at the same place I do, and she said the check engine light hasn't come back on since so SUCCESS!

Looking at the way the sensor is connected, I think it would too much trouble to try and connect a new sensor only to that flat ribbon cable, but that's just my .02 cents worth LOL!

If you are able to buy from a transmission rebuilder supply house like "Whatever it Takes" here in TN, one may be available, but I can't say for sure as the owner bought the part and gave it to me to install.

I don't know much about cars, but why didn't you check the wiring before going straight for the sensor? My instinct would go for the easiest, least invasive treatment (the wiring) before trying to replace the sensor.

Normally you would be right. You shoudl always follow the basics of "6-Step" troubleshooting. However, in this case, this is a very common issue in the Hyundai's which had already been diagnosed and quoted to the owner by the dealer. All I had to do in this case was confirm it, and replace the part.

Same problem!!! 😭 so many recalls on my car.. hyundai replaced motor under recall and they gave me a hard time! The recalls currently are for the airbags, software update & fuel pipe something.. & no my car is jerking just like ur wifes so i called hyundai and said ive read hundreds of complaints regarding this issue and he said he hasnt heard any of this issue with sonatas?! Its a nuisance already.

Had the same issue with my 2011 sonata had the sensor replaced in 2020 then in 2023 engine was replaced 4 mons later my Trans temp sensor is bad again but found out my drive train is covered for life thru hyundai so it's going back to dealer

Guess mine will be the lone complaint: Your video is quite frustrating. 1) You don't show the part, its part number, nor if OEM or aftermarket; 2) you completely skip over the removal/replacement process for the harness; 3) you don't show each harness connector removal/replacement location within the valve body.
