Great explanation. Totally understood it. For anyone interested in further information, there’s a video of Stefan Holm demonstrating the hinge point which dovetails perfectly with this.

I think this was my problem when I was high jumping in high school. I usually have a big curve but I noticed I straightened up right as I was about to jump. And like you said, I landed on my butt rather than my shoulders. I do remember achieving this end lean successfully a few times and it made me go so much higher. I was barefoot too! I always kick myself because I don't know how I could never make that lean consistent. But I won't be able to participate in track & field until college. :(

Très bonne analyse et excellent conseil

@stefanosgrmn You want to keep that lean all the way until your jumping foot hits the ground (the foot/step you'll takeoff with). Once that foot hits the ground you can let yourself start to go vertical so that right as you leave the ground you are jumping straight up.

Gregg, thank you for yet another clear and effective presentation. Even better than your trusty whiteboard if that is possible, LOL.

if you come in from the left then you are supposed to be jumping off your right, so you are correct

Im 16 years old and im right footed, i kick a football with my right foot and in long jump i take off with my right foot, but in higjhump i approach from the left wich means my take off foot is my rite and my vertical leg is my left many athletes has told me this is wrong, doe sit really matter? please help me out!

You want your drive leg to be your power leg, so your plant foot is the other leg. One way I've seen to figure out which leg is the power leg (because it may not be what you think), is if someone is standing and unexpectedly pushed from behind, the leg they put out to catch themselves is their power leg. You want to plant the other foot and drive up with the power leg.
