Here are three possible ways to resolve the issue of USB storage not showing up in Windows or not having drive letter assigned to it automatically. The first solution is quicker but kind of temporal, while the other two require a bit more but are permanent, I covered all three in this tutorial.
SOLUTION 1: Manually Mount the External Disk by Assigning it a Drive Letter
SOLUTION 2: Enable Automatic Mounting of New Volumes
SOLUTION 3: Check for Attributes that Prevent the Disk from Showing up in the Computer Folder or Having Drive Letter Assigned to it Automatically.

So pleased I found your site. I wasted so much time with the "experts" (including the official Microsoft!) who basically only tell us what as users we already know. You on the other hand, seem to have the real answers to the difficult Windows issues. . Every time I connected the ext disc I had to go to Computer Management - Disc management and re-allocate a drive letter, but this took 10 minutes while it was "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service" I finally solved this using your "enable auto mount" By the way, just out of interest do you know why it takes 10 minutes "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service..." before it populates with the list of drives ? It never used to take more than 60 seconds? Thank you again for the great service you provide here. I have started to use many of your informative videos about the Windows system.

just fixed it Open the Disk Management console. ... Right-click the unallocated volume. Choose New Simple Volume from the shortcut menu. ... Click the Next button. Set the size of the new volume by using the Simple Volume Size in MB text box Then format with those options and done!

Brilliant! Just what I needed. After cloning Windows 10 to a new SSD (yet to be installed) and leaving Windows 10 on the original SSD, the os couldn't detect an external HDD or flash drives. Using the automount instructions everything is working again.

Actually IF you made an EXTERNAL HDD and it doesn't show up in the list, but you know its not damaged, and it gets recognized by the windows USB/PORT when you plug it in. Please make sure you give it an hard enough push to connect it properly to the circuit of the enclosure case! Just unscrew it and give it another small push until it "clicks" in place and mount it again! This was my problem and how I fixed it.

Okay I found the fix for this: search "create and format hard disk partitions" scroll down to the hard disk that doesn't work, right click it, new volume. Then just follow the wizard until u assign any letter to it (i used G). After doing this my hard disk showed up in This PC (my computer) with the name "New volume", you can just rename it to whatever you want. Hope that helps :D

EasyTechs The problem that I’m having is after I put in this part I typed in select disk 1. Then I typed in list part and received the message of there are no partitions on this disk to show. I can actually see the hard drive and when I right click on properties, go to hardware, and select Ed my passport 25e2 usb the device status shows as this device is working properly.Once I click the property tab under that and click on the volumes tab it’s blank. When I select list part I get 4 different partitions, I've tried selecting all 4 and typing in attributes volume but for Partitions 1,2,3 I get a message stateting "There is No Volume Selected". When I select Partition 4 and type in attributes volume I get a message of "Microsoft DiskPart version 10.0.18362.1 ACTIVE - Mark the selected partition as active. ADD - Add a mirror to a simple volume. ASSIGN - Assign a drive letter or mount point to the selected volume. ATTRIBUTES - Manipulate volume or disk attributes. ATTACH - Attaches a virtual disk file. AUTOMOUNT - Enable and disable automatic mounting of basic volumes. BREAK - Break a mirror set. CLEAN - Clear the configuration information, or all information, off the disk. COMPACT - Attempts to reduce the physical size of the file. CONVERT - Convert between different disk formats. CREATE - Create a volume, partition or virtual disk. DELETE - Delete an object. DETAIL - Provide details about an object. DETACH - Detaches a virtual disk file. EXIT - Exit DiskPart. EXTEND - Extend a volume. EXPAND - Expands the maximum size available on a virtual disk. FILESYSTEMS - Display current and supported file systems on the volume. FORMAT - Format the volume or partition. GPT - Assign attributes to the selected GPT partition. HELP - Display a list of commands. IMPORT - Import a disk group. INACTIVE - Mark the selected partition as inactive. LIST - Display a list of objects. MERGE - Merges a child disk with its parents. ONLINE - Online an object that is currently marked as offline. OFFLINE - Offline an object that is currently marked as online. RECOVER - Refreshes the state of all disks in the selected pack. Attempts recovery on disks in the invalid pack, and resynchronizes mirrored volumes and RAID5 volumes that have stale plex or parity data. REM - Does nothing. This is used to comment scripts. REMOVE - Remove a drive letter or mount point assignment. REPAIR - Repair a RAID-5 volume with a failed member. RESCAN - Rescan the computer looking for disks and volumes. RETAIN - Place a retained partition under a simple volume. SAN - Display or set the SAN policy for the currently booted OS. SELECT - Shift the focus to an object. SETID - Change the partition type. SHRINK - Reduce the size of the selected volume. UNIQUEID - Displays or sets the GUID partition table (GPT) identifier or master boot record (MBR) signature of a disk. Ii got the same thing, but then did this. Press the "window' key + R. When the new box opens, type in diskmgmt.msc and tap OK. The disk management box will open and you will see what your hard drive, possibly Disk 1 as it did for me. From there, to be honest I can't quite remember because mine is now repaired and showing as healthy and is working. But what I do remember is that is was quite straight forward and simple. I either clicked on Disk 1, or possibly right clicked on it and went from there. Nothing else was required and it immediately showed as healthy and was recognized by my PC. Hope this helps!

Great video, I have one question though, I am trying to do the third solution as the second one did not work for me, I am on the step where you have to type list part, which I just did, however, it says there are no partitions on this disk. As context, I just bought a brand new 2.5¨ laptop hard drive (which I intend to use on a PS3) that I want to format as FAT32, however its not being recognized when I plug it to the computer via a SATA to USB cable. Any help would be appreciated.

at 2:58 when I right click there are only three options: -new simple volume -properties -help the rest are grayed out, and they are: -new spanned volum -new striped volume and they are underneath the "new simple volume" Any fixes? Edit: there is a black bar instead of a blue one and it says "unallocated" underneath the spot where it says the total storage.

Even in Diskpart my external hard disk is not showing up. But when I connect pen drive, it is showing up. No issue with my hard disk, I tested. What else could be the issue.

I went through it all and went throught to the last on using diskpart. I selected partition 1 and it said 'Partition 1 is not the selected partition'. I then typed 'volume attributes' it says 'there is no volume selected please select a volume and try again'. I then typed 'attributes volume clear nodefaultdriveletter'. it says there is no volume selected please select a volume and try again. I just don't get it!

Okay I found the fix for this: search "create and format hard disk partitions" scroll down to the hard disk that doesn't work, right click it, new volume. Then just follow the wizard until u assign any letter to it (i used G). After doing this my hard disk showed up in This PC (my computer) with the name "New volume", you can just rename it to whatever you want. Hope that helps :D

Apologies in advance if you see my question on multiple videos, but I can't find any video helping with my issue. My external hard drive gets recognised and is supposedly running healthy and with most recent drivers, however, I can't access my content on the hard drive and it doesn't show in my computer. When I open disk manager to try and change drive letter and paths, it tells me I "must initialize disk (my external drive) before disk manager can access it" But obviously I'm worried it will wipe my whole drive. So I don't have the option to do anything without initializing the disk first. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Well my issue is I caused a 4T External HDD to split into two partitions when i tried to put Linux onto it after i had already put files on it which caused it to split into two and it is not given a drive letter when i plug it in. According to my disk part program there are no partitions on my disk 1 (which is my external HDD) but my disk manager is showing the two split partitions. so yeah trying to fix that mess.
