Thank you, I hope you can let people know, just because mold is on the inside of the ceiling and or wall does not mean you have it inside your exterior or interior walls. I recently tore out lost of drywall looking for it, but did not find anything wrong....Good lesson to know. Wood glue works as good as Zinsser or Kilz sealer to seal the drywall damaged paper, before you do your drywall mudding. Thank you, I am going to buy the zinsser Mould resistant paint...

Hi, the 120 is best used when there is a lot of filler to be rubbed down and the 240 is good for small isolated areas. However, the 120 is a good one to use for most situations.

Hi Peter, for your Formica cabinets I would suggest the following, apply 1 or 2 coats of Zinsser Bullseye 123, no need to rub it down first. This paint has excellent adhesion on these types of surfaces. Then apply a water based satin wood, eggshell or gloss. The bullseye is white but can be tinted with acrylic colours. The water based satin wood etc normally has quick drying on the labels. Hope all goes well for you 😊

Fantastic, very useful. DIY'er here. Just moved into a new house and there are loads of small strips/patches 10-20 mm wide, in varying lengths, some up to 100-150mm long, of bubbling/flaking emulsion paint, down several, moderately sized areas of a lot of the walls (both solid external/load bearing and the plasterboard upstairs internal ones). Not sure what's caused it but it's going to be a lot of work to repair. Glad I checked the video as I wondered about scraping, sanding and sealing, so good to get confirmation. I have noticed, however, that when sanding, some of the smaller 'bubbles' have flattened back down and are no longer visible. Should I worry about these lifting again or will sealing with PVA take care of these? Obviously I don't want to finish off and have them flaking again in a short while. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks 👍
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry to hear about the flaking paint problem. One reason for this could be that they have applied a matt emulsion paint directly over a silk emulsion paint. The matt emulsion wont adhere well to the silk and peels away in places. Hopefully it will be ok if you can scrape back the flacking paint to a firm edge. The areas where the bubbles have flattened down will probably bubble again as soon as you apply fresh paint over it so try and remove the paint from those areas. I would suggest you treat one wall as shown in the video and apply paint to see how it turns out before doing the rest. If you get any more problems please get back to me. Fingers crossed for you.
@TheTruthHz
@TheTruthHz 3 жыл бұрын
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Amazing, that's exactly what's happened. Thank you so much. The original (satin) paint is perfectly adhered and is quite impossible to remove without sanding back to the plaster. The subsequent next two colours were obviously applied, poorly, with a brush are the problem and are especially loose where it's thicker. The real problem is that they're loose in places but because it's matt finish, it's hard to see where they're adhered and I only find out where they're loose when it comes off. Very frustrating. And to add insult to injury, all the ceilings and the bathroom and kitchen walls have artex on them... which we've had tested and contains you-know-what... Any how, I've taken your advice up to applying the PVA coat and am just waiting on the filler to dry. However in applying it I've revealed more areas that are lifting. And, of course, the bit I'm working on, and is worst, is the hall/stairs/landing 😂😔 At least I know what the problem is now. Thank you.👍 I'll let you know how I get on.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating

Goodness me you have got a mission on your hands there. For future reference, if you need to apply vinyl matt over vinyl silk, give it one or two coats of Zinsser Bullseye 123 first and that should sort it. I do hope you can sort it out without to much work. contact me again if you have to, good luck 🤞

Hi. My ceiling paint has been peeling quite a long time, I'm searching how to repair..😓 Could you advise me that I heard about after scraping and plastering/putty have to use oil sealer paint so it'll be last longer? Using oil sealer paint is a correct idea or not necessary? Is oil sealer paint same as oil paint that actually take longer time to dry and keep moist inside will cause peeling easily in future? After plastering have to choose PVA, oil sealer paint or anti-mould paint or latex or water paint? Plastering, putty and your video filler are they same thing for repair paint peeling? How to decide which one to use? What filler product name in your video which it is dark in the video can't see? Your advise is much appreciated 🤗🤗😇

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you are right when you say that oil based sealer will trap moisture and may later cause flaking. I would suggest you try the processes shown in my video. Scrape off the flaking paint and rub down the remaining paint lightly with a 120 grade abrasive. Seal around the flaking areas with some PVA glue thinned with 1 part glue and 3 parts water. Leave overnight to dry. Apply Pollyfilla where required and when dry rub down smooth. Prime the filled areas and any bare plaster with Bullseye 123 and leave a couple of hours to dry. Apply 2 coats of the Zinsser Perma-white. I hope that helps 😊

Hi, be very careful sanding the water based gloss as it remains quite soft for a long time. Use a 240 grade if it requires sanding and abrade very lightly. If the first coat does not have any bits or defects you can apply directly over the first coat.

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, if the ceiling does not have the mould problem but was just flaking then using the matt emulsion should be fine. But make sure you treat the flaking areas as shown in the video. If you do get the black mould problem in places then you will need to use the Zinsser. Some retailers will tint it the colour you want so check before you buy it. Hope that helps.

Looking at the safety data sheet for this product it only contains 5% bleach. I would suggest trying a solution of 1 part household bleach to three parts water. This would give a stronger solution of 25% bleach which normally does the trick. Hope all goes well for you 🙂

Hello Aubrey I'd like some of your expert advice. I've used a blown vinyl wallpaper that has a tongue and groove effect. The problem is that it is easily spoilt if it gets knocked. I've painted it a dark red colour but it has accidentally been badly scratched so I wondered if there was a paint or something that would make the surface more rigid? Because it is so soft to touch I'm regretting using it. It's in a bedroom and the bed is right against the wall. Hoping you can help!
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenny, yes blown vinyl is easily damaged and difficult to repair. Now that it has been painted it is difficult to apply a product that will make it more rigid. There are many modern paints that state that they are tough and durable and could help. Dulux Trade Diamond Matt states: Key Benefits, Scrub, scuff and stain resistant, Ultimate durability, Repeatably cleanable smooth matt finish, Anti-Fade technology. Other manufacturers also produce similar products. If I think of another alternative then I will let you know.

Hi, you could paint them using the same paint system which I show on my painting old pine furniture video. This furniture had previously been varnished. It should be a suitable paint system for you.

Hi Aubrey, trying to sort an issue in my girlfriend's bedroom - upon waking up or spending 30mins in there we both feel slightly nauseous and dry lips and eyes etc, it appears there is a patch of maybe water damage from the roof, have you encountered anything like this before? The current plan is to knock not back to the brick, replace the plaster and repaint
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what could be effecting you health wise in the room. Might be worth getting a carbon monoxide detector just in case. Before removing the plaster you could try treating the water stain with Zinsser BIN Primer. This stuff works really well with covering water stains.

Good video but how much is 1 part of PVA glue and 3 parts of water? do you mean a full cup? or full tablespoon? of each?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, it all depends on how big the area is to be treated. Either one will work. I would suggest first try mixing it up using a small measurer like the cap from an aerosol spray or similar. The solution does go a long way so you do not need loads of it. Hope all goes well with the decorating.

Can you use perma white on radiators.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, the Technical Data Sheet for this product states that it can be applied to previously painted metals and will adhere well to glossy surfaces. I have applied other water based finishes to radiators and I would think that this product should be suitable. Hope all goes well with the decorating.

Do you think the mould problem is coming from the other side of the ceiling Aubs?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Could be Kathy but that might also show as a brown water stain on the ceiling. It might be where there is a gap in the loft insulation or perhaps a cold bridge as it is near he outside wall

Oh, I need that scraper. What brand Aubrey?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, I am not sure what brand it is. Most decorating merchants should stock similar. It is a 1" scraper with hardwood handle and make sure the metal tang goes the full length of the handle.

Why do you use pva before you use filler?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
The PVA seals the area which is to be filled. This prevents the old paint from lifting around the edges of the areas to be filled. If PVA is not applied you will find that the old paint will start to lift away around the edge of the area which has been filled. I hope that helps.

personally i would machine sand those bits till they are feathered out and all flat so no edges. Then sealer
@kilmoregalway

so no need for filler either? if all feathered out and smooth and flat. You then say Sealer, is that PVA?

@@kilmoregalway oil based sealer/primer. Stops anything coming through and also hardens the edges so they won't keep peeling.
