Hi Peter, for your Formica cabinets I would suggest the following, apply 1 or 2 coats of Zinsser Bullseye 123, no need to rub it down first. This paint has excellent adhesion on these types of surfaces. Then apply a water based satin wood, eggshell or gloss. The bullseye is white but can be tinted with acrylic colours. The water based satin wood etc normally has quick drying on the labels. Hope all goes well for you 😊

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Жыл бұрын
I used some Bullseye 123 thinned with around 20% water to prime the filler. You could also use some normal matt emulsion paint thinned 20% with water.
@TheTruthHz3 жыл бұрын
Fantastic, very useful. DIY'er here. Just moved into a new house and there are loads of small strips/patches 10-20 mm wide, in varying lengths, some up to 100-150mm long, of bubbling/flaking emulsion paint, down several, moderately sized areas of a lot of the walls (both solid external/load bearing and the plasterboard upstairs internal ones). Not sure what's caused it but it's going to be a lot of work to repair. Glad I checked the video as I wondered about scraping, sanding and sealing, so good to get confirmation. I have noticed, however, that when sanding, some of the smaller 'bubbles' have flattened back down and are no longer visible. Should I worry about these lifting again or will sealing with PVA take care of these? Obviously I don't want to finish off and have them flaking again in a short while. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks 👍
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry to hear about the flaking paint problem. One reason for this could be that they have applied a matt emulsion paint directly over a silk emulsion paint. The matt emulsion wont adhere well to the silk and peels away in places. Hopefully it will be ok if you can scrape back the flacking paint to a firm edge. The areas where the bubbles have flattened down will probably bubble again as soon as you apply fresh paint over it so try and remove the paint from those areas. I would suggest you treat one wall as shown in the video and apply paint to see how it turns out before doing the rest. If you get any more problems please get back to me. Fingers crossed for you.
@TheTruthHz3 жыл бұрын
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Amazing, that's exactly what's happened. Thank you so much. The original (satin) paint is perfectly adhered and is quite impossible to remove without sanding back to the plaster. The subsequent next two colours were obviously applied, poorly, with a brush are the problem and are especially loose where it's thicker. The real problem is that they're loose in places but because it's matt finish, it's hard to see where they're adhered and I only find out where they're loose when it comes off. Very frustrating. And to add insult to injury, all the ceilings and the bathroom and kitchen walls have artex on them... which we've had tested and contains you-know-what... Any how, I've taken your advice up to applying the PVA coat and am just waiting on the filler to dry. However in applying it I've revealed more areas that are lifting. And, of course, the bit I'm working on, and is worst, is the hall/stairs/landing 😂😔 At least I know what the problem is now. Thank you.👍 I'll let you know how I get on.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Goodness me you have got a mission on your hands there. Hi. In the video-Zinsser123 primer-sealer stain killer is it oil sealer paint ?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you are right when you say that oil based sealer will trap moisture and may later cause flaking. I would suggest you try the processes shown in my video. Scrape off the flaking paint and rub down the remaining paint lightly with a 120 grade abrasive. Seal around the flaking areas with some PVA glue thinned with 1 part glue and 3 parts water. Leave overnight to dry. Apply Pollyfilla where required and when dry rub down smooth. Prime the filled areas and any bare plaster with Bullseye 123 and leave a couple of hours to dry. Apply 2 coats of the Zinsser Perma-white. I hope that helps 😊

Hi When painting a door with water base gloss paint if second coat is required does it need slightly sanding before second coat is applied.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating4 жыл бұрын
Hi, be very careful sanding the water based gloss as it remains quite soft for a long time. Use a 240 grade if it requires sanding and abrade very lightly. If the first coat does not have any bits or defects you can apply directly over the first coat.

Very helpful video Aubrey but my wife wants her own mixed color on the ceiling, will an ordinary matt emulsion be OK without the Zinsser?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, if the ceiling does not have the mould problem but was just flaking then using the matt emulsion should be fine. But make sure you treat the flaking areas as shown in the video. If you do get the black mould problem in places then you will need to use the Zinsser. Some retailers will tint it the colour you want so check before you buy it. Hope that helps.

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Looking at the safety data sheet for this product it only contains 5% bleach. I would suggest trying a solution of 1 part household bleach to three parts water. This would give a stronger solution of 25% bleach which normally does the trick. Hope all goes well for you 🙂

Hello Aubrey I'd like some of your expert advice. I've used a blown vinyl wallpaper that has a tongue and groove effect. The problem is that it is easily spoilt if it gets knocked. I've painted it a dark red colour but it has accidentally been badly scratched so I wondered if there was a paint or something that would make the surface more rigid? Because it is so soft to touch I'm regretting using it. It's in a bedroom and the bed is right against the wall. Hoping you can help!
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenny, yes blown vinyl is easily damaged and difficult to repair. Now that it has been painted it is difficult to apply a product that will make it more rigid. There are many modern paints that state that they are tough and durable and could help. Dulux Trade Diamond Matt states: Key Benefits, Scrub, scuff and stain resistant, Ultimate durability, Repeatably cleanable smooth matt finish, Anti-Fade technology. Other manufacturers also produce similar products. If I think of another alternative then I will let you know.

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
The PVA seals the area which is to be filled. This prevents the old paint from lifting around the edges of the areas to be filled. If PVA is not applied you will find that the old paint will start to lift away around the edge of the area which has been filled. I hope that helps.
