1990 F150 5.8 Fuel pump ran constantly with key on, hard starting and E4OD was slamming into gears... It was the ECM.. Had bad Capacitors and 1 corroded trace.... Fixed the ECM and it runs perfect now.. Should have 32# Fuel pressure at idle that goes up when throttle gets revved. 14# of vacuum at idle. Measure at Map sensor. Always check the ECM first... Its easy and if the caps are corroded thats your problem.

When you said 25-30mph I knew I was in the right place. I’m glad I’m not crazy I have a ‘91 f150 5.8l 351w and live in south Florida. It reached 52° today so my truck was acting up something serious. I made a list of all check points and will update when resolved. Also why would my truck shut off when put in reverse after about a second unless I hit the gas?

Jesus are you talking about the magnetic pick up inside the distributor or the lower camshaft gear that is attached to the distributor, coolant temperature sensor is what I think you mean yes those can be a mechanics nightmare . Thanks Jesus keep up the good work Compadre !!

There are many other things it could be with those symptoms. If you pull the spout plug and it makes no change then it would be that sensor, otherwise its something else on the timing circuit.

@@texastim5687 its located near the test plug. Its a little plug thats in a connector that comes off the wiring harness. It interrupts the return timing signal from the distributor to the computer. Without that signal, the engine runs a specific timing curve designed to prevent engine damage and allow you to drive to a shop.

On the older F250s check the high pressure fuel pump. It is external to the fuel tanks mounted on the frame rail. If it is bad you will have normal fuel pressure via the low pressure pumps while at idle, but under load the failed high pressure pump will hinder engine performance.

If the cam senser is bad like you said it would not start at all there would be no square wave to the moduel so that means no spark

They dont have cam sensors! Its a round disk with square fingers that are spaced out and go past a pickup to trigger a square wave. If it were a cam sensor it would be bolted directly to the camshaft. No different then the msd crank sensor with the little magnets in it. All do the same thing but but ford is in the dizzy not on the cam or crank.

I HAD MY 96 E250 W/5.8L it warmed up then trying to drive at the shift point the trans would go to neutral and the engine would die then pick up and surge. no enginbe code light on but the MAF sensor was bad and the engine temp sensor was telling the ECM the engine temp was 504F degrees but the temp gauge was in the normal range. one mechanic said my trans was bad. i changed the bad parts and it runs fine now

Have you tried cleaning the ground wire to the TFI and the coil ground. If not, it could be your knock sensor.

Question: I've a 1992 F150 with a 5.0. I am having some issues with hesitation between 35 mph to 55 mph, after 55 mph you step on the gas and it makes power with no problem. The hesitation issues only comes into play after the engine is warm! It idles prefect hot or cold. Here is a list of the things that I have replaced and checked. -(Replaced) EGR value, TPS, O2 Sensor, Fuel Regulator, Fuel Filter, Water Temperature Sensor, Air Charge/Manifold Temperature Sensor, Plugs and Plug Wires, Distributor, Rotor Button, Distributor Cap.-(Cleaned and inspected), Fuel Injectors, IAC, Throttle Body- (Checked) Transmission Fluid, Vacuum Leaks, Timing, Firing Order, Fuel Pressure 30 psi at idle, Unplugged the MAP and the engine tried to stall, Cylinder Compression.The only Code is 634 neutral safety switch! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

check your spark plugs......mine was acting like this and all it was was oil was getting on one of my spark plugs....start your truck and one by one pull a plug wire off your distributor and when the engine stays the same check that plug.....changed spark plug and it runs great now.........

Other than that only thing left Is the computer which costs about 160. I've read some forms online where one guy said his was so bad it would die in gear and it was the computer. The 5.0s are amazing motors but the EFI systems are very picky.

Attach a fuel pressure gauge and get your phone set up recording a video of the fuel pressure gauge while you crank it. If it pumps up pressure and drops to zero immediately after you release the key, it's probably a bad check valve in the fuel pump allowing fuel to go back into the tank.

Im interested in this too i have same problem. Don't think it would be cam sensor but codes help diagnosis better. Egr? Maybe but doubt that rough, knock sensor unlikley but kinda backfire so not sure have to test. retime engine with spout out but I have a continual circut in my 93 f150 xlt 300 6 maybe thats it check codes. Test map sensor easy way blow in tube see if ur truck shuts off. Headgasket, fuel filter pump seem last options but dont rule them out. i dont think tps would cause bad idol or map thaf more has to do with surging, iratic rpm jumps. More feels like truck running like crap. No power shaking lil backfire high rpm sometimes low.. all starts with diagnosing dont throw parts at it. have you found your problem because I havnt.

My 92 F150 5.0 EFI does this but I cant even get passed 10 MPH. It seems like there is no fuel getting to the engine, but it also seems like this might have something to do with the TPS. It seemed to run fine when cold but then I hit a stop light after running it... it just died, I started it back up and it was backfiring, popping, and shaking terribly. Pulled up to an Autozone and it idled fine but as soon as I got on the road again it started doing this all over again. Now it idles rough and it acting up in all the RPM bands. Anyone got an idea what this could be?

Hey I've had issues with my 93 bronco with the 5.0 in it. I replaced the fuel pump and it seemed to run right for a day. After that I was driving home when the truck just died. Realized that one of the big fuses were blown so I switched it out and also switched out the relay and it got me home. Went to drive it around my neighborhood to see if it was ok when it did it again. Truck has no pickup now and I'm baffled. I checked the computer and it seems ok. Didn't know if you had any ideas. Jose Z. It could be a lose spark plug wire causing that, and or a blown head gasket, it could have let some antifreeze into one of your cylinder or cylinders. And I would take it to a shop before something bad might happen
