The movies in general were not kind to Mrs Weasley. To me, she was a role model from book one. On platform 9 3/4, she immediately sees Harry as a boy rather than a famous curiosity. She knits Harry the first loving Christmas present he has ever received. She takes him in, loves him and makes him her son before he even realizes how much he needs it. I remember thinking, even as a child, that I hope I would have that much love in me as an adult.

A particular line that always sums up Molly's view of Harry to me was in the scene on the platform in Philosopher's Stone when the kids tell her that the boy they just met was Harry Potter. Instead of being excited/awestruck because of his significant past, she merely remarks rather sadly on how polite he was. She's a mother who sees a lonely eleven year old boy with no one to help him/wave him off on his first day of school. Molly is no saint, she definitely has questionable moments later down the line (for well-meaning reasons) but this definitely sums up what she is first and foremost - a mother.

Yes, I like Molly Kanga Weasley better than I like Molly Flanderized Weasley. I recently read a story where Mrs. Weasley is also Kanga, and while it was a hard thing to read, that is literally my favorite Molly Weasley.

Harry makes fun of Ron's old dress robe with the others in the movie. Totally opposite of the book where he empathised with Ron. It was so heart breaking and sweet. I think it's the worst change for Harry.

I think one of the worst changes for Harry was in the maze. In the book, he saves Cedric twice. Once from Viktor Krum who was under the Imperius curse and once from the giant spider. In the movie though, it's the other way round. Cedric saves Harry's life and when Cedric is in trouble Harry doesn't immediately go to help him. He considers taking the cup over saving Cedric. The idea that Harry would choose to win a competition over saving a friend (especially when that friend had just saved his life), is just ludricous. It's like that scene was written by someone who had zero understanding of who the character was.

Tristan Lane yeah I had realized that, cuz in the movie Dumbledore tells the champions that the maze changes you or something like that. But I just felt that whole thing was incredibly pointless and didn’t really make much sense, and it wasn’t there at all in the book. The tournament was first and foremost a *competition.* So the whole “you have to work together” theme that the movie was going for makes absolutely no sense. They were *supposed* to be competing. And also the cup is a perfectly normal cup. There was nothing evil at all about it in the book. It was just a portkey that took Harry and Cedric to the graveyard. Other than that it wasn’t anything special like the One Ring.

Also that scene in the cave halfway thru the book is just so perfect, Sirius gives us our first glimpse of the the first war really was, of what's coming in the last two books, and it completely recontextualizes the everything thats come before it.

I think they wanted to have a big contrast between the schools but they’re already different enough culturally, they didn’t need to do that. Single-sex wizarding schools also make no sense considering everyone in a country (or continent) goes to the same one

Mike Newell, the director of this movie actually admitted to not being able to get through the book, and didn't understand the parts he actually read, so the director of the previous movie, Alfonso Cuarón more or less saved the movie a bit by suggesting to Mike that he at least watch the third movie before making the fourth. Mikes reaction to this was that since Alfonso had already made a movie dark in tone, that Mike could not do the same, because he absolutely wanted his own stamp on the movie, so he made it comedic instead. SMH! Then several staff members had to stop Mike from making stupid decisions like having the Hungarian horntail burn down the dark forest etc. Tbh it's not that strange then that this movie was a bit weird. I guess we should really blame the producer, who hired the wrong director for a project like this.

that is so nasty!!!! not only did he not read the book, he didn't even LIKE it??? i shouldn't be surprised, because that sentiment 100% comes through in the movie. i've always had a problem with that one director, it's very very clear in the comedic/dramatic scenes that are out of place in the series as a whole, and the weird character moments that rely more on gender roles than the actual people JK created, that he didn't have any respect for the source material.

Yeah the scene with Hermione yelling “I’m not an owl!” pissed me off so much. It’s completely out of character for her to completely side with Ron and be mad at Harry while in the book she sticks by both of them and tries to get them to talk to them. Your video is one of the most accurate when it comes to the key differences to book and film. I’m not one of those fans that gets pissed off about every tiny thing the movies leave out, I completely agree that it’s character development that’s most important.

Even in the first task, they just kind of went crazy with flying around the hogwarts grounds instead and a dragon clawing up a tower. In the book, he pretty much just flew back and forth and around in circles (not that exciting in movie form, so I see why they needed to make it more exciting) but they just went WAAAAAY over the top

Something that I find interesting about Hermione is that she can be emotionally intelligent at times, but not so much at other times. Such as in POA, when she doesn’t really understand why Lavender dreads her rabbit dying and tries to convince her that the thing she dreads’ didn’t really happen on October 17, or when defends Crookshanks without even considering that Ron might have a point- there’s no proof that Crookshanks ate Scabbers, but there’s no proof that he didn’t, either.

I think they did the same mistake in the 8th movie, the prioritisation of action over character, and therefore ruined one of the best book scene, at least in my opinion I’m talking about the last Harry/Voldemort fight They chose to make it an enormous battle, with the red and green beams crossing every five seconds, with screaming, and explosions, and destruction of hogwarts. I’ve always felt that the book scene was so much more powerful. Harry has grown up, he has sacrificed himself, he has understood a lot and he is calm. While Voldemort has still not evolved, doesn’t understand what makes Harry more powerful. The circling of the two, with everyone witnessing the moment silently, while Harry finally explains everything to Voldemort and tries one last time to save him, is so powerful. And it could have had such a big visual impact too ! Much more than constant explosions, which do not differ from the rest of the battle. Edit : I hadn’t finished the video before posting my comment. Damn, your analysis is really SO DAMN good. I know the books by heart, read them 43 times, and can’t watch the movies anymore because I get too frustrated with them, although they ARE good movies and I would never shun someone for appreciating them. For me the biggest reason was that while the mystery in the books was rock solid and they have that great Sherlock-moment where everything becames clear and all the questions are answered, none of that is in the film. There is a mystery, but no answer at all

i remember when I saw it i just kept thinking "if I hadn't read the book I would have no idea what is happening atm". It just felt so rushed, even the pace of conversations felt really fast, with the best example being the one mentioned in this video (cedric and harry in front of the cup) but also a lot of other scenes like Moody's first dark arts class. They often spoke like they'd all snorted a line of coke right before filming

I also have to add the thought that I’ve always had (at least since rewatching in adulthood) is “of course they had to make the girl in this situation seem like the unreasonable one because that’s reflective of real life, we can’t encourage teenage boys to actually reconsider their attitudes and emotions. Girls get... periods and... hormones and things, yeah it makes way more sense for 14 year old Hermione to lose her shit than it does for Ron (the perma joke of these films)”. 11:58 - Exactly. I would say that was an issue in multiple movies, especially after Sirius's death in the Order of the Phoenix - they failed to demonstrate the effect of his death on Harry. In the movies, he recovered pretty quickly like he didn't just lose the only remaining person who he could consider a family! Unlike the book, which dedicated around 2 1/2 chapters for Harry's grieving process and all the thoughts that were invading his mind.

I haaated that the movies completely did away with Harry losing. his. shit. in Dumbledore's office. And really just his PTSD and anger throughout all of Order of the Phoenix, but particularly that scene in Dumbledore's office is just utterly heartbreaking. As much as Daniel's acting was great in the moment where Sirius dies, I find the book so much powerful for the fact that Harry *doesn't* just instantly go to a sad place- he gets furious and out of control like he's never been before because his grief is way beyond just sad, and it kills me every time I read it. And in the movie it's just like... sad for a moment, then meh.

I only read the books once, so my memory of everything is a bit foggy, but watching this reminded me of the things that irked me about this movie. Hearing those passages again was so emotionally moving, it's a shame that they decided to rely on action to keep the attention/interest of the audience instead of the characters. Great video :)

I had probably re-read a couple of the later books in 2010/11 before the movies, but it has definitely been over 10 years since I've re-read the whole series. I'm halfway through book 2 now. It’s fantastic and such a beautiful read, especially as I’m older now and different things resonate with me now compared to when I was younger. One of the big issues the HP movies ran into is that as the books got longer, JK started including a lot more of big setpieces and setting up stuff that required a lot of exposition. These things can be spaced out and introduced slowly over the course of a 600 page book, but it becomes much harder when you have to select stuff to put in a 2 hour and a half movie. I think the big schism comes starting from this movie, where multiple plot points are heavily condensed, sometimes to the point of barely making sense. The Yule ball is a pretty big part of the book and in the movie it feels like its in fast forward. They dance, Hermione argues with Ron at the table, then we SKIP to the end of what could be an interesting argument with Hermione and Ron, where Harry just randomly bumps into them while shouting at each other. Also maybe it's a thing from already knowing because of the book, but the "reveal" that "Moody" was not the real Moody in the movie is so blatantly telegraphed, that I'd be surprised if anyone didn't figure it out. This problem is how we get stuff like the Half Blood Prince movie, where we get some good character moments, but then a bunch of stuff is brought up, then dropped immediately with no explanation. Harry starts the movie just in love with Ginny for no good reason (it was awful in the books, but is somehow even worse in the movie) and once they hook up, he like barely talks to her again in the rest of the movie. We barely find out anything about Voldemort other than that he was bad when young as well. The movies start feeling more like a checklist of cool/important moments, just skipping from set piece to set piece with less and less connective tissue as they go on.

@@Casutama I agree - plus, Harry didn't really see Ginny's actual personality until the previous year, when she finally was able to hold a coherent conversation when he was in the room. He was still into Cho at that point, but after his feelings for Cho faded, it makes sense he'd have a crush on Ginny because they were already developing an emotional connection by the end of the previous year (see: the scene where she brings him Easter eggs in the library and gets him to open up about his frustrations)

That last moment in the maze always gets me in the book. Goblet of Fire ties with Half-Blood Prince for my favourite of the series and the reason I love both so much is all the character moments that the big adventures take a backseat to for once. Not that I don't like the adventures, but I'm usually more interested in characters than plot when it comes to long form storytelling. I actually never got around to finishing the movies (and with JKR's current, let's say, _attitude_ I don't really feel like it, even though I own the dvd set already) and it's strange to hear that they so often cut moments that are necessary for the story to work. It often seems to me as if one would need to have read the books as supplementary material to get the full story from the movies.

I hope you create more Harry Potter content, because your analysis is wonderfully incisive and always well reasoned! this was really beautiful. it's been a long time since I've read the books, and I'm far more familiar with the films. It's easy to forget the small detailed differences. I saw this movie before reading the book, having entered the HP fandom late. So the differences didn't bother me in the beginning. Like you, I accept that changes are necessary for different mediums. But eventually I did find fault with the changes made to this film because I felt they didn't actually serve the story or make it better. I really appreciate being reminded of what made this book so special and pivotal in the saga

I know that's their excuse, but they could have done it without doing so many elves and more in theory (most of Hermione's S.P.E.W. related plans develop before she even goes down to the kitchen to visit them, so they could have left that out or glossed over it). Also, these films were so hyped and so successful, they could have spent anything they wanted on the elves, they would have had the budget for it (especially if they cut out some of the other things that they included that weren't in the books, like the obscenely long dragon scene in task 1 or burning down the burrow in the 6th film. I have no idea about movie budgets, but those will have cost some money, I imagine. Or they could have SOMEWHAT toned down the yule ball scene. It's an important scene, but - especially the way they do it in the films - it adds almost NOTHING in terms of character development (in the books, at least it serves to make us like Viktor Krum) and they spent 6 months and almost certainly a huge amount of money on that set. Now if they'd only reallocated some of that money to S.P.E.W., which actually in my eyes is one of the most important things we learn in the series about Hermione's character...

@@torchtorquedreams4348 first of all I have seen castings that have been better, even fan castings, and I would disagree, some actors were very old and did not correctly portray the characters. We need a younger cast for some characters. And Netflix has done a wonderful job on many of its other shows. CGI and VFX has only gotten better, and JK Rowling can invest more in this because she is more wealthy now, and we can include everything from the books because it's a series, so already there are two massive advantages. As for plot points, all you need is a passionate director. It isn't necessarily supposed to be from Netflix.

In the movies JK Rowling made great choices, such as Christopher Columbus who chose the perfect cast and designed Hogwarts and pivet drive and Diagon alley and shaped everything. She chose a great director for prisoner of azkaban because of which it is the most cinematic movie, and she chose a great political director for order of the Phoenix, so we can trust her judgement, though the director in goblet of fire movie kind of messed up. Also it doesn't necessarily has to be Netflix as long as it's a series where almost all the book is covered so you can get the same experience as the book, but it will be very expensive and since there are already the movies, a lot of the actors would shy away from this reboot, while it will prompt the attention of a lot other actors.

One of the biggest problems with the GoF movie is that Mike Newell didn't quite understand the book, he even said that the book was too long and confusing. And there had been ideas to split the book but Newell was against this. But all in all I can even respect the fourth movie and I somewhat like it.

When I was really young I loved this movie to bits and pieces because it was dramatic and when you're a child that keeps your attention and really grabs you. I loved the book too but it wasn't until I was much older that I appreciated the slower character building moments in the book. You reading the passages aloud with the Weasleys' really pulled at my heart - time to re-read the books again :)

As you like this book very much, I would like to pose to you the reason why I have a problem with the entire premise. I could never understand why it was needed for Potter to be a champion in the tournament and win to enable him to covet the trophy to be transported elsewhere when a portkey -- something Dumbledore created in his office in the next HP book -- could have been created and awaiting Potter to pass to 'Moody' inside Moody's office. The author made clear that apparitions are not possible inside Hogwarts' grounds because of security charms but she never stated portkey creations were not possible as well. As the site of the final task -- the transformed quidditch pitch -- is also inside the protected grounds, traveling by portkey is possible. I understand the entire plotlines needed the portkey in the center of the quidditch pitch hedge maze but without Rowlings adding text to justify the reason for it having to be there, and there was no necessary delay for Voldemort and Pettigrew to have Potter sent to them, the gaping plot hole remains why 'Moody' chose to go through a plan with so many possibilities of failure instead of a simple, "Potter, would you pass me that object (a portkey) over there?" in his office. I wonder if you or anyone else has a problem with this as I do. If only there was a reason stated in the novel's text that would have made that easy way impossible, I could wholeheartedly enjoy this entry like I do the others. Thank you.

The problem though is that we’re only told he ruined things but not shown how he did. That’s bad story telling. Also, this is supposed to be moment she comes into her own but having her breakdown and cry ruins that. That’s the reason Rowling has her stand up to Ron and tell him the way it is instead of her breaking down like in the movie.

I love re-reading all of the Harry Potter books but the Goblet of Fire was and always will be my absolute favourite! The character focus, the mystery element, the action - it all comes together and honestly is so perfect. It definitely one of my favourite books of all time. The movie is good, but in comparison to how amazing the book is it just felt a little hollow to me. This was a great analysis of it, especially on the sacrifice of character for action and intensity, even though you didn't talk much about the incredible murder mystery part of the book which was sadly mostly omitted from the film. See I took that Dumbledore scene when he asks harry about putting his name in the Goblet completely different. It didn't seem like anger or disapproval as much as he seemed panicked or scared for Harry in that moment and wanted answers as to who is responsible immediately and then I believe he talks to Bartemius to try and get harry out of the competition. The impression I was given by that scene was more in line with worry and shock rather than anger. And I believe it was used as a device to show us the viewer how serious the upcoming conflict was going to be by showing a out of character Dumbledore.

Dude! You've just hit the nail on the head on why the Harry Potter movies (this one in particular) always had something missing when compared to the books. People get so worked up over the movies skipping things like the Quidditch World Cup, SPEW or Peeves or Percy, but a movie adaptation should never be about including everything. It's about including the RIGHT things. There was a Reddit thread about "Things you wished were in the movies" and almost everyone was going on and on about the Quidditch World Cup, Peeves etc and no one mentioned the character moments. The moment before the third task where Harry is expecting the Dursleys and is wondering who will come for him and Molly and Bill show up, is such a heartwarming moment and would have worked wonders in the movie. It remains my TOP moment not included in the movie among many others, and I see you are one of the very few ones who mentioned it. The "Goblet of Fire" and some of the other movies in the series had the potential to be fantastic movies if only they were adapted right.

A lot of people who haven’t read the books think this is the best of one of the best films in the series. I think people’s enjoyment of this movie depends on how much they care about it’s faithfulness to the book. While I did read the book many times I still do enjoy this movie a lot despite its inaccuracy.
