Let's talk Walt Disney Animation, The 2020 Oscars and the Frozen 2 "snub"! Frozen II is the follow up movie to the wildly successful 2013 Frozen. It is directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. With a voice cast of Kristen Bell and Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Josh Gad as Olaf and Jonathan Groff as Kristoff. Many different tropes discussed - praise for how the first Frozen subverted those tropes and a little disappointment in how Frozen 2 didn't commit to subversion as well. However despite the title, the video isn't all negative!

❄️What trope should I cover next? Thinking Love Triangle. And apologies for 15:38 😬 no idea what happened there EDITt: I cut out that part, didn't know it was so loud! (might take a second to process). The line I said was "They saved each other, no one died, but also the reality they couldn’t accept as kids turned out to be true. They were never going to be best friends forever."

That would be interesting. Apparently, the team started with the ending (Anna rules Arendelle, Elsa is in charge of the Northuldra kingdom) and worked backwards. Would destroying the castle be consistent with this ending? Yes. But Elsa should have been allowed to use her powers at the end, and it was the Nokk's decision to allow her to do this...

I was a little disappointed with the ending at first as well because I really really liked the movie as a whole. But I think everyone tends to forget that Elsa was literally riding on the Water Spirit. The one that stopped the flow of Arendelle's waterfall. That's actually the one reason I'm justifying the ending for the movie

I would’ve loved the arendelle was destroyed ending much better. Just seems more real. Dam goes down, good news. But cause and effect, bam boom bop, flood comes and destroys the city. Gives a much more “new dawn” type of feel and much more impact to Anna’s decision.

I agree. even if they want to save Arendelle and show Elsa's power they can just flood the castle. from the looks of it, the castle were clearly closer towards where the water came from. if I have to change the ending it would be; Elsa was late to save Arendelle. the castle would be destroyed, the edge of the village too but the higher land with houses would still be saved. Kristoff would not be married or even engaged to Anna because he'd be too busy re-building the kingdom with Anna. this could also served as a means to show that he's capable of being a leader beside Anna. not just to be the trophy husband. at the end Elsa would still be able to revive Olaf and visit the restoration. it's still a happy ending but WITH consequences and price Arendelle had to pay for their past mistakes.

I agree that the ending of Frozen 2 was too happy. It would have been far more powerful to see the reactions of the Arendelle people losing their homes (like you said), then following this with the people coming together to rebuild it. I can easily envision that as the final number in the film too, expressing the great loss, but with hope for the future. They could have rearranged the events as well, with Arendelle being lost tragically, then Elsa and Olaf being revealed as alive afterwards, showing ~what matters most~, and even in a time of great loss, they have each other and their community to make it through (suddenly I am reminded of "When We're Together" from Olaf's Frozen Adventure). Such a missed opportunity.

I went out of the cinema thinking "Arendelle should have been crashed". On further introspection, I think Elsa should not have saved Arendelle. If the spirits came together and said "these people aren't the ones to blame and we'll save them", that would have been fine. Elsa basically teleporting first to Arendelle and then to Anna is just too much for me.

But they did just that. Elsa even said "The spirits decided to give Arendelle a second chance". That's also why she was unfreezed, because the spirits and Ahtohallan (Elsa's source of magic) decided "Hey, these guys aren't responsible for what their pre-former king has done, maybe we should forgive them". What you just said IS in the movie.

Hans would've been a better character if he wasn't a plot twist villain because he didn't really seem to have any kind of schemes against Anna or Elsa. In fact, Hans was just a good guy because he helped the people of Arendel to get through the cold winter that Elsa made (accidentally) in the first movie. And besides, there is a more obvious villain (Mr. Wessleton) and it could solidify the story more if he was one or something. It could change the movie's direction a whole lot just with those small details being thought out more. But yeah, those are just my thoughts, hope you guys don't mind reading this much of a comment lol. I just really love Frozen and Frozen II for what they can become.

Kristoff would not be married or even engaged to Anna because he'd be too busy re-building the kingdom with Anna. this could also served as a means to show that he's capable of being a leader beside Anna and grow his character a bit. not just to be the trophy husband. to be honest with you, I'm annoyed that throughout the movie everyone get their characters developed but him. it has been irritating me. at the end Elsa would still be able to revive Olaf and visit the restoration. it's still a happy ending but WITH consequences and price Arendelle had to pay for their past mistakes.

Well, Arendelle shouldn’t have to pay for a mistake the royal family’s grandfather made. I think what the sisters did for both the enchanted forest and Arendelle should suffice. Destroying the village would just be unneeded (if they’ll just repair what’s lost) and an unnecessary stretch of movie time. We don’t really ever focus on the townspeople’s lives but the sisters always did what’s best for everyone. The palace is all they have left of their parents and is their childhood home. It would be awful if Elsa couldn’t make it in time to save it. It’d especially be bad for Elsa’s character if her powers were a burden to her her whole life and yet it couldn’t save the town.

I sort of both agree and disagree with your ultimate thesis. I do believe that Arrendele being destroyed would have been significantly more impactful and would have delivered on the setup of Anna making the decision to destroy the dam. I think they probably did intend for this to be a possibility, considering the cut song "Our Home", which was all about Anna wondering what she could do for the place she lives in, and the foreshadowing set up in "Some Things Never Change" with Elsa saying "I promise you the flag of Arrendele will always fly". However, I also do think that making the act of reparations be a zero sum game would have been a mistake. The sins of the past can never be washed away, and having an eye for an eye mentality about such things is destructive. Innocent people's homes being destroyed will not have erased the decades the Northuldra spent trapped inside of the forest or the fact that their leader was wrongfully murdered. It wouldn't be justice, it wouldn't be healing, it would just be revenge. I definitely feel that Arrendele should be expected to do SOMETHING to make amends, and perhaps that could be explored in a future sequel, but to say that suffering and misfortune must befall people who had nothing to do with a wrong that was committed in the past, and to make that a moral of a children's movie, I don't feel would have served a constructive and progressive purpose. Finally, I do believe that the movie does have bittersweet ending, at least partially, and it's more related to the ultimate emotional core of the films. Anna and Elsa are now separated. Not permanently, and not on bad terms, but they ARE no longer together. To me, who also was a huge fan of the first movie, I feel that separating the two of them to any degree is in fact a really gutsy move, and probably as gutsy as the studio would allow the filmmakers to be with the sequel to their highest grossing animated film. Anna and Elsa's relationship was the emotional core of the first movie, having them be together was the entire conflict. Now the sequel has them separate again, though willingly. I find that to be pretty bittersweet and emotionally mature as well, that distance and diverging life paths does not mean that you aren't important to each other. To me, that's what the filmmakers ultimately put all their chips on, and I think it was the more important priority. This comment is ridiculously long. If you actually read all the way to this point, then props to you sir. I did like your video and I agree with practically all of your opinions and views! I just think that prioritizing a vengeful notion of reparations would ultimately have not been in the movie's service, and that they ultimately gave more attention to what was more important to the film as a whole and the adjacent franchise. Great job! Also your video was how I found out that the movie wasn't even nominated so lol.

There's little or no bitterness in their 'separation'. The writers helpful created a magic instant email service to ensure that they would be always in touch. I'd argue that Anna has actually changed in the sense that she was able to demonstrate a lil bit of independence as she was able to take action with destroying the dam despite percieving that she may have just lost her loved ones. Otherwise, I agree that while Kristoff's music video was funny, it did not really explore his character and Elsa kind of has the same character arc as in the first movie.

As to Kristoff, I feel this character was betrayed and almost abandon in Frozen2, I am really sick about this (Kristoff was much more significant in the first one). His present is just for selling the 80's ballad and sorting out his relation with Anna -- in a sloppy process or anything because they don't care; he was seldom fit in the main story line in Frozen2, and Anna actually didn't need his help and support to get all works done.

This! Especially since the movie keeps on bringing up "change". After Elsa abandoned Anna and Olaf, Olaf is upset and says that everything has kept on changing even though Anna said it wouldn't. Later, after Anna has lost both Olaf and Elsa, her song's emotional peak is the camera rotation and her turmoil when she cries out that "it's clear that everything will never be the same again". The movie would have been much more solid if it stuck to its guns and really gave a huge impactful change to the character's lives, since it had been preparing the audience for it the entire movie. Now the only change to status quo is that Anna and Elsa both got promotions??

Brave was initially about mother and daughter bond, but during the film they removed the original story artist/director from it and that's why the story went flat generic from up there. It was still a time where creating stories about women's relationships in animation wasn't a popular idea (was male-dominated industry). Hopefully, that changed. I know it may sound harsh from me but I don't really look for any conspiracy or ill will up there - but simetimes its hard for man to understand the nuances. In 80's there weren't even any diviision for girl toys- and male bosses were puzzled that girls want to play with something else than dolls and kicthen utensils. (see Netflix : my little pony the toy r us series). As for Hans he probably wasn't the intended villain- there was no forthshadowing-which is a method used in 99% of movies. he really didn't have any gestures that would suggest otherwise. Probably it was a desicion on a go, cause the "no villain" movie was too scary for the producers I guess .

And than after she PROMISED Anna she would stay with her, she left with no explanation. Just like she did in the first movie and Anna had to save her again. Time and time again Anna is sacrificing herself and her happiness for Elsa and Elsa literally never acknowledges it. Also yes, she may have “apologized” but it just felt like cheap character writing. Saying 'it's a kids movie' makes it sound like an excuse and gives a poor justification to the movies obvious flaws. Kids movies shouldn't have to be defined this way - like I said kids deserve quality too. In saying that when these movies are criticized/reviewed and analysed, it is done in the context of the audience they are aimed at. But a story is still a story no matter who it's aimed at and all usually contain the same structure, so when some call out it's narrative flaws they are (in my opinion) justified for the aforementioned reason. Because i think the message is: you can right the wrongs of your ancestors. you dont have to repeat their mistakes. but that doesnt mean that you have to be punished for their sins. its like saying that the descendants of Hitler, or germany, should be tortured bc of what he did to Jews. And besides, there are literally no consequences to the first Frozen either. Elsa unfreezes everything in seconds, and there is no retaliation from the kingdom. they literally ice skate at the palace days later. not only that, but how could the movie end leaving thousands of ppl homeless including our leads. and you couldnt kill Elsa or Olaf bc people meet them in the parks. they´re also building Arendelle at the parks. its like saying Ariel shouldve stayed a mermaid at the end of her film or Rapunzel shouldve lost Flynn in order to have consequences. even though we analyze the film as adults, its still a childrens movie, theres no way disney couldve done that.

I got easily annoyed with Disney for poking fun at their previous movies in Frozen, and I disagree with its subversions being well executed. It was mocking and poking fun at themselves, and Tangled subverted princess story expectations a lot more naturally without being HAHA LOOK HOW STUPID WE WERE BEFORE! You can subvert things without being edgy y'know? Also, Hans being a villain makes no sense with his actions, as mentioned before me. The Prince Charming love interest not working out, and it being okay, and Hans growing from it and being okay with not being a king because he learns to love the people would have been much better. Frozen 2 didn't bother me all that much, but... I do admit they should have destroyed Arendelle. The ending could have been them rebuilding after all, and showing a thematic "we're going to rebuilt it in a better way", both the city and the people. (Also, as for the other oscar nominees, the ones this year are really good! Though I almost wish they had gone with Frozen instead of HTTYD. HTTYD is my favorite franchise, period, but while its visuals are breathtaking and the story is emotional, it's also riddled with plot holes and OP characters and inconsistencies. Frozen wasn't subversive enough, true, but it had a solid story and execution and animation. It broke its series' premise (we'll fight for our dragon friends and we'll change the world) to keep the ending similar to the books (ie their separation, which the books handle much better), dropped plot threads (Drago??? His alpha randomly appearing in the HW), has undeniable OP characters (a small crew of 6, sans dragons, took down an ARMADA). It may be visually gorgeous but it's absolutely not worthy of an Oscar, objectively speaking. Frozen has the visuals and story and a lot less issues than HTTYD. The second one ended with Elsa living alone (alone meaning no Anna) with her powers. WTF. I only liked Frozen because I liked the idea of Elsa finding acceptance with her subjects by proving herself. But now she gave it all up, and why? WHY? Because she's different, does she suddenly have to live in the woods in a lifestyle she's never really known? Her people never threw her out. You missed the point. Just because the people around you accept you doesn't mean you can't feel out-of-place. Moreover, in the forest she discovered that she and Anna are both the 5th spirit (the bridge between humans and spirits), so each one should fulfill her role. Elsa should stay with the spirits as the spirit side of the bridge, while Anna should stay in Arendelle and lead the humans of the modernized civilization. Elsa still visits Arendelle once in a while for meetings with Anna so she shows she is still feeling OK with the Arendellians and thus doesn't retcons the events of the first film.

As I said earlier, Elsa likes the Arendellians. After all, she still visits Arendelle once in a while. Her lesson from the first movie was not forgotten. It is simply her destined role in life to be the leader of the spirits, because otherwise she wouldn't have felt like Arendelle isn't her rightful place. In the first Frozen Elsa was the catalyst who initiated the challenge to overcome, but they gave two villains to lead the audience through the story and provide immediate peril. In Frozen 2, there were no direct villains. The conflict took place inside the sisters, and each one had to descend into the depths and face themselves and their own fears. Elsa had to confront her powers and accept them, and Anna needed to face her dependence on Elsa and become an independent person, no longer simply following her sister around. They needed to find their own strength and master it. Disney has never done a movie on this level before. It was about time they did. They needed to grow up. They also needed to make the events of the ending clearer so they didn't look so forced. Maybe in the next movie.

I disagree on so many ways. 1. Hans wasn't a compelling villain because I predicted his true personality from the moment Anna and Kristoff met each other. 2. The twist at the end of the first film about sisters's family love wasn't very great because, while it was surprising, it wasn't built up throughout the story well. We didn't see enough clues or effects of sisterhood being just as strong as true love in the story (if any). It literally came out of nowhere. Surprising doesn't equal compelling (maybe for you it is so I won't judge). 3. If a concept of subverting established expectations was done previously with the same IP, it doesn't mean the sequal has to do the same. If it wasn't a sequal to Frozen than I think you wouldn't have had these thoughts. It wants to do it's own thing, being a study about the history of that world and focus on action and world-building. Frozen 1 wasn't even praised for it's SURPRISES, just for it's soundtrack and characters (which btw SUCK). 4. At the beginning it was told that the mere reason they decided to go to the forest wasn't the siren Elsa heard (I'm mean, it was certainly a motive, but not THE motive). They went to the forest because Arendelle was affected by the spirits and the troll chief told them that Arendelle has no future without finding the truth. If the town was to be destroyed, while the expectation subversion would've been a thing, it will also be such a spit in the face of why they even came to the forest in the first place. Elsa, or a queen in general, won't leave her ruled kingdom without a strong enough motive (both for her and for her kingdom). A siren you hear isn't enough of an excuse, but for the sake of SAVING YOUR KINGDOM it is. If you didn't like it as much than fine, but this video will undeservely affect some people's opinions negatively towards this movie just because of you, a man who presented SUBJECTIVE and PERSONAL issues with the movie and will push undeserved negativity towards it. At least I'm rooting for Klaus or Weathering With You to win this year over the boring ass Missing Link, the unnecessary Toy Story 4 and the disappointing How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World. I would easily say Frozen 2 deserved a nomination more than these 3 movies because it at least had some effort and was entertaining throughout, even with some small missed potentials here and there (and I don't even like Frozen 1 so there isn't bias here).

Honestly, I think that direction would have been better, and make Ambassador "Wesselton" the real bad guy.

Okay, but don't tell me that Frozen deserved the Oscar more than The Wind Rises. I thought the movie was okay, although I am aware that the popularity of it did get on my nerves. I understand the importance of breaking the old Disney tropes, however, studio Ghibli has always been ahead of Disney in terms of story/animation. But since people in North America grew up with Disney movies, this argument goes out the window I guess?? Yes, Disney has improved over time, but I wouldn't say their movies as captivating as Ghibli's (Zootopia was pretty great though) I did like Frozen 2 a lot more than the first movie. Despite the all it's problems I think it got a lot more creative.

According to the "Art of Frozen II" book, Arendelle was supposed to be destroyed in the flood. It would have then be rebuilt with Northuldra influences, which is shown in the concept art. This would've worked really well, as it not only would it give Anna's sacrifice more weight, but it would also signify the genuine unity of Arendelle and the Northuldra, with Anna's sacrifice being the "bridge" to that.

I'm mixed on this, because that is a pretty interesting idea, but Elsa would have seemed weak if she didn't get to use her magic at the end. Maybe she could have done this rebuild with her ice powers, but there are several problems with this. Ultimately, I think the happier ending was based on the need to keep things simple and allow Elsa to show off at the end...

I agree, although I get why the ending wound up as is (for deeper reasons than just "happily ever after"). It was the spirits that determined the fates of the kingdoms, and since Elsa is the fifth spirit, she wound up passing judgment that Arendelle deserved a second chance given her promise in "Some Things Never Change" and Anna's choice to destroy the dam. It might not have been the best way to do it, but it does tie the story together.

I agree, it would have been more powerful if Arendelle was destroyed and they have to rebuild it along with the tribe, exchanging cultures and uniting. It also bothered me that we didn't have much of the guards of Arandelle and the tribe characters. While I think they should've went with the destroyed castle ending, I think the ending we got is just as ambitious: they had the guts to basically retcon the first movies ending by swapping the sisters arcs. Anna, who always loved the kingdom, becomes Queen. Elsa, who's always wanted acceptance and freedom, gets to be herself in the forest. It send a great message about doing what's best for yourself in life and chasing your passions

@@monabohamad2242 Ragnarok is actually one of my favourite MCU films (and best Thor movie imo) because it was a lot more fun and colourful, but not painfully sappy that it would make 3 year olds groan (Looking at you, Troll at Central Park). Story-wise, it's good, mainly because it adds more character development to not only Thor, but Loki as well. Finally, we get to the ending. Asgard gets destroyed, which actually leaves an impact on the franchise. On the other hand, Frozen 2 has filler dialogue, little to no character development (not to mention that almost everyone in Frozen 2 did basically nothing) and an ending so sappy, stupid and unfitting, it put HIMYM to shame to bad endings.

I enjoyed watching the video but I am sorry to say that I totally disagree with the suggestion that the Arandelians were the villains just because one single person who happened to be their king decided to weaken their neighbouring kingdom and attacked a harmless, unarmed man from behind. Even most of his loyal soldiers had no idea it and if the parents of Elsa and Anna, who were there at the time, knew nothing about it, surely the people of Arandelle who have their own real life problems knew nothing about it either (and even if they did, it is still the king's fault and there was not much that they could do about it).Above all, I was appalled at the suggestion that the Arandelians, many of whom were probably not even alive when these events took place or were too young, should pay for the sins of their dead ex-king (I won't say for the sins of their fathers for the very simple reason that their fathers had nothing to do with it) and that they should be punished for a crime they didn't commit by watching their homes being destroyed. The fact that there would be no loss of life does not mean much. Homes have sentimental value for people especially when many generations have lived there and they undoubtedly have cherished possessions in their homes which they would be heart-broken to part with. I am against any form of shaming people for things their ancestors did and making them feel guilty for things that they played not part in or were unaware of. It would be unacceptable to make people nowadays pay for the crimes that, say, their Nazi grandparents committed, don't you think? Even the suggestion itself would be a horrible thing to bring up. And you would have been unhappy to see your home and your land being taken away from you if it had emerged that many generations ago, this land was taken by driving away the local population (which is something that has been happening continually throughout the entire history of mankind). Besides, the spirits did not make the destruction of Arandelle a requirement in order to break the spell; all they were asking for was to have the dam destroyed and Arandelle just happened to be in the way. But if Arandelle could somehow be saved, it was not something the spirits were against and there was no demand for a sacrifice (maybe that is why Elsa was a "gift" in the first place; perhaps she was expected to use her powers and minimise the damage when the moment arrived). And not without good reason: the Arandelians would have been outraged if they had to listen to Anna telling them that this is something that had to be done; they would hate her as their new queen for doing this to them and they would be secretly praying for Hans or someone like him to come and take over and then attack their Northern neighbours just out of spite (and to have their revenge for the loss of valuable jewellery or other precious heirlooms , beloved pets as well as other livestock and family fortune lost when Arandelle got flooded). As for bittersweat endings or tragic endings, they work in some movies but movies such as Fox and the Hound and Pocahontas are not exactly very high up the lists of family Disney favourites. I am not suggesting that these movies are bad (I love Pocahontas and I appreciate Fox and the Hound for what it is though it never quite appealed to me despite watching it several times) . It is just that families usually watch Disney movies expecting an uplifting happy ending and many already were unhappy to see Elsa and Anna separating and the team being broken up. Seeing Arandelle being destroyed too would have felt more like a tragedy rather than a bittersweet ending as it would imply that it doesn't matter how kind one is; all that matters is what the ancestors you never met did before you were born. Frozen 2 had many problems with its plot, relying heavily on flashbacks that did not connect well together in order to tell a coherent story and I was left so confused while trying to put the pieces together at parts that I may have to pick up the novelised version just to understand what happened. But the ending (besides Elsa's departure which I personally didn't mind but I know others did) was great. On a relevant not, I never felt that Pocahontas was suggesting that both sides were at fault. In fact, it seemed to me that the British were the only ones at fault as they came there to attack the locals and take their land and their gold. It was not just Radcliff, the others shared his views to some extent (even John Smith who was the hero). The Indians were merely defending their land and did nothing villainous. Compare that to Frozen 2 where the soldiers of Arandelle were simply accompanying their king and knew next to nothing about the king's intentions. As for Disney sequels, if I recall correctly, both Peter Pan 2 and Jungle Book 2 were released in theaters so shouldn't that made them official sequels? Not that it matters anyway as Disney seems to consider every sequel they make to be official. I am fine with all of them as long as they do not affect what is considered to be canon in the original film. I love Lion King 2 but, like many fans, I reject Lion King 3 (which is actually more of a Timon and Pumba movie) on the basis that several events clash with the continuity in the first film. I also don't approve of mid-quels like the Beauty and the Beast ones which feel shoe-horned into the first film. But I love the Aladdin sequels and the TV series, as they expand the universe of the first film without contradicting anything.

I agree with you about the ending- it was too happy! I also think Arendelle should've been destroyed, but I'd also would have like to see a little more patriotism (couldn't think of a better word) from the sisters or at least one of them, preferably Anna, to make her decision to destroy the dam, and with it her home, have more meaning. I'm afraid I have issues with Elsa leaving Arendelle and her people behind to go live in the woods, as I feel this ending defeats the purpose of the first film where the sisters were finally united after spending so many years seperated. She didn't feel anxious about ruling, she just wanted to know about herself and her powers, and so I feel Elsa could still fulfill her duties a a queen and still know her place in the world.
