I agree that the ending of Frozen 2 was too happy. It would have been far more powerful to see the reactions of the Arendelle people losing their homes (like you said), then following this with the people coming together to rebuild it. I can easily envision that as the final number in the film too, expressing the great loss, but with hope for the future. They could have rearranged the events as well, with Arendelle being lost tragically, then Elsa and Olaf being revealed as alive afterwards, showing ~what matters most~, and even in a time of great loss, they have each other and their community to make it through (suddenly I am reminded of "When We're Together" from Olaf's Frozen Adventure). Kristoff would not be married or even engaged to Anna because he'd be too busy re-building the kingdom with Anna. this could also served as a means to show that he's capable of being a leader beside Anna. not just to be the trophy husband. at the end Elsa would still be able to revive Olaf and visit the restoration. it's still a happy ending but WITH consequences and price Arendelle had to pay for their past mistakes.

I have the artbook and it's even in there that the kingdom was originally planned to be destroyed
@rellikai9455 жыл бұрын
I sort of both agree and disagree with your ultimate thesis. I do believe that Arrendele being destroyed would have been significantly more impactful and would have delivered on the setup of Anna making the decision to destroy the dam. I think they probably did intend for this to be a possibility, considering the cut song "Our Home", which was all about Anna wondering what she could do for the place she lives in, and the foreshadowing set up in "Some Things Never Change" with Elsa saying "I promise you the flag of Arrendele will always fly". However, I also do think that making the act of reparations be a zero sum game would have been a mistake. The sins of the past can never be washed away, and having an eye for an eye mentality about such things is destructive. Innocent people's homes being destroyed will not have erased the decades the Northuldra spent trapped inside of the forest or the fact that their leader was wrongfully murdered. It wouldn't be justice, it wouldn't be healing, it would just be revenge. I definitely feel that Arrendele should be expected to do SOMETHING to make amends, and perhaps that could be explored in a future sequel, but to say that suffering and misfortune must befall people who had nothing to do with a wrong that was committed in the past, and to make that a moral of a children's movie, I don't feel would have served a constructive and progressive purpose. Finally, I do believe that the movie does have bittersweet ending, at least partially, and it's more related to the ultimate emotional core of the films. Anna and Elsa are now separated. Not permanently, and not on bad terms, but they ARE no longer together. To me, who also was a huge fan of the first movie, I feel that separating the two of them to any degree is in fact a really gutsy move, and probably as gutsy as the studio would allow the filmmakers to be with the sequel to their highest grossing animated film. Anna and Elsa's relationship was the emotional core of the first movie, having them be together was the entire conflict. Now the sequel has them separate again, though willingly. I find that to be pretty bittersweet and emotionally mature as well, that distance and diverging life paths does not mean that you aren't important to each other. To me, that's what the filmmakers ultimately put all their chips on, and I think it was the more important priority. This comment is ridiculously long. If you actually read all the way to this point, then props to you sir. I did like your video and I agree with practically all of your opinions and views! I just think that prioritizing a vengeful notion of reparations would ultimately have not been in the movie's service, and that they ultimately gave more attention to what was more important to the film as a whole and the adjacent franchise. Great job! Also your video was how I found out that the movie wasn't even nominated so lol.
@seunosewa5 жыл бұрын
There's little or no bitterness in their 'separation'. The writers helpful created a magic instant email service to ensure that they would be always in touch. Kristoff would not be married or even engaged to Anna because he'd be too busy re-building the kingdom with Anna. this could also served as a means to show that he's capable of being a leader beside Anna and grow his character a bit. not just to be the trophy husband. to be honest with you, I'm annoyed that throughout the movie everyone get their characters developed but him. it has been irritating me. at the end Elsa would still be able to revive Olaf and visit the restoration. it's still a happy ending but WITH consequences and price Arendelle had to pay for their past mistakes.

Well, Arendelle shouldn’t have to pay for a mistake the royal family’s grandfather made. I think what the sisters did for both the enchanted forest and Arendelle should suffice. Destroying the village would just be unneeded (if they’ll just repair what’s lost) and an unnecessary stretch of movie time. We don’t really ever focus on the townspeople’s lives but the sisters always did what’s best for everyone. The palace is all they have left of their parents and is their childhood home. It would be awful if Elsa couldn’t make it in time to save it. It’d especially be bad for Elsa’s character if her powers were a burden to her her whole life and yet it couldn’t save the town.

Later, after Anna has lost both Olaf and Elsa, her song's emotional peak is the camera rotation and her turmoil when she cries out that "it's clear that everything will never be the same again". The movie would have been much more solid if it stuck to its guns and really gave a huge impactful change to the character's lives, since it had been preparing the audience for it the entire movie. What really made me upset is that there was literally no character development. Elsa never acknowledged how terrible she was being to Anna, Anna never acknowledged how terrible she was being to kristoff and it literally ended with everything the way it was when the movie started. I’m like I’m pretty sure elsa didn’t even apologize for running off and leaving Anna behind and was just like “ah you’ll always save me Anna no consequences here” it was so annoying
@wannasalad5 жыл бұрын
Kristoff never apologized either and he's just a whiny needy guy the whole movie. Anna should have dumped him

Not to mention that everyone but Elsa, her grandfather and the person that the grandfather murdered were the only characters that influenced the story. Everyone else felt like an awkward side character that did basically nothing. Hell, Kristoff and the tribe people aren't even in half of the movie!

You can say the exact same things about them in the original.
@roiitzkovich45454 жыл бұрын
1. Elsa was not terrible for Anna. She left her and Olaf because The Dark Sea has large waves and the water spirits Nøkk, which are too dangerous for them. Imagine if Anna and Olaf did come with her... they would've died easily. She had no reason to apologise for something that had to be done for her safety. 2. Anna did apologise to Kristoff for leaving him behind. She said "I'm sorry I left you behind, I was just so desperate to protect Elsa" and he forgave her by saying "It's OK, my love is not fragile".
@sophiisherman74634 жыл бұрын
Roi Itzkovich 1. Anna tbh has abandonment issues from Elsa and her parents. And the entire first movie was about Elsa learning she couldn’t do it by herself, she needed to stick with her team. And than after she PROMISED Anna she would stay with her, she left with no explanation. Just like she did in the first movie and Anna had to save her again. Time and time again Anna is sacrificing herself and her happiness for Elsa and Elsa literally never acknowledges it. Also yes, she may have “apologized” but it just felt like cheap character writing. But than again I posted this comment ages ago and haven’t seen the movie in months this is just what I remember thinking about it

Brave was initially about mother and daughter bond, but during the film they removed the original story artist/director from it and that's why the story went flat generic from up there. It was still a time where creating stories about women's relationships in animation wasn't a popular idea (was male-dominated industry). Hopefully, that changed. I know it may sound harsh from me but I don't really look for any conspiracy or ill will up there - but simetimes its hard for man to understand the nuances. In 80's there weren't even any diviision for girl toys- and male bosses were puzzled that girls want to play with something else than dolls and kicthen utensils. (see Netflix : my little pony the toy r us series). As for Hans he probably wasn't the intended villain- there was no forthshadowing-which is a method used in 99% of movies. he really didn't have any gestures that would suggest otherwise. Probably it was a desicion on a go, cause the "no villain" movie was too scary for the producers I guess .

I didn't realise til watching this video, but this was the feeling I got from the ending. I was watching Anna sacrifice her kingdom. So noble. And then just have it undone by magic. When I saw the water make its way towards Arendelle I felt a rush, of excitement and dread. And when Elsa stopped it, I first felt relieved, but then disappointed.

I hate that the point of the first film was made void with the second. Elsa wanted to live alone with her powers, but her sister helped her realize that she could be loved by the kingdom regardless of her magical abilities. The second one ended with Elsa living alone (alone meaning no Anna) with her powers. WTF. I only liked Frozen because I liked the idea of Elsa finding acceptance with her subjects by proving herself. But now she gave it all up, and why? WHY? Because she's different, does she suddenly have to live in the woods in a lifestyle she's never really known? Her people never threw her out. At the end of the first film, they accepted her for all that she was. Screw the sequel for retconning the first film that people universally loved and enjoyed.
@roiitzkovich45454 жыл бұрын
You missed the point. Just because the people around you accept you doesn't mean you can't feel out-of-place. Moreover, in the forest she discovered that she and Anna are both the 5th spirit (the bridge between humans and spirits), so each one should fulfill her role. Elsa should stay with the spirits as the spirit side of the bridge, while Anna should stay in Arendelle and lead the humans of the modernized civilization. Elsa still visits Arendelle once in a while for meetings with Anna so she shows she is still feeling OK with the Arendellians and thus doesn't retcons the events of the first film.
@barbaro2674 жыл бұрын
@@roiitzkovich4545 That doesn't make sense though. If people love you for who you are, what does it matter that you're different? I think Elsa's journey in the sequel was a bit unnecessary, and the thing about her being a "fifth spirit" extremely convoluted (not just my opinion. A lot of people agree that there are things that don't make a lot of sense in that film).
@roiitzkovich45454 жыл бұрын
@@barbaro267 OK, first of all, people didn't understand it because they didn't analyse the movie to the tiniest details. Anna asked Elsa if she found the 5th spirit and than realized Elsa herself is. Than Elsa responded "Well actually a bridge has 2 sides, and our mother had 2 daughters". Both sisters are the 5th spirit (the bridge). What doesn't make sense about it? 2. As I said earlier, Elsa likes the Arendellians. After all, she still visits Arendelle once in a while. Her lesson from the first movie was not forgotten. It is simply her destined role in life to be the leader of the spirits, because otherwise she wouldn't have felt like Arendelle isn't her rightful place. Also, how can you say her journey was unnecessary when it literally explained why she has magic. A lot of people wondered about that for years and the answer of "she is just a gifted woman" wasn't enough.

I agree, although I get why the ending wound up as is (for deeper reasons than just "happily ever after"). It was the spirits that determined the fates of the kingdoms, and since Elsa is the fifth spirit, she wound up passing judgment that Arendelle deserved a second chance given her promise in "Some Things Never Change" and Anna's choice to destroy the dam. It might not have been the best way to do it, but it does tie the story together.

Okay, but don't tell me that Frozen deserved the Oscar more than The Wind Rises. I thought the movie was okay, although I am aware that the popularity of it did get on my nerves. I understand the importance of breaking the old Disney tropes, however, studio Ghibli has always been ahead of Disney in terms of story/animation. But since people in North America grew up with Disney movies, this argument goes out the window I guess?? Yes, Disney has improved over time, but I wouldn't say their movies as captivating as Ghibli's (Zootopia was pretty great though) I did like Frozen 2 a lot more than the first movie. Despite the all it's problems I think it got a lot more creative.

According to the "Art of Frozen II" book, Arendelle was supposed to be destroyed in the flood. It would have then be rebuilt with Northuldra influences, which is shown in the concept art. This would've worked really well, as it not only would it give Anna's sacrifice more weight, but it would also signify the genuine unity of Arendelle and the Northuldra, with Anna's sacrifice being the "bridge" to that.
@Rtotalmagic5 жыл бұрын
I'm mixed on this, because that is a pretty interesting idea, but Elsa would have seemed weak if she didn't get to use her magic at the end. I got easily annoyed with Disney for poking fun at their previous movies in Frozen, and I disagree with its subversions being well executed. It was mocking and poking fun at themselves, and Tangled subverted princess story expectations a lot more naturally without being HAHA LOOK HOW STUPID WE WERE BEFORE! You can subvert things without being edgy y'know? Also, Hans being a villain makes no sense with his actions, as mentioned before me. The Prince Charming love interest not working out, and it being okay, and Hans growing from it and being okay with not being a king because he learns to love the people would have been much better. Frozen 2 didn't bother me all that much, but... I do admit they should have destroyed Arendelle. The ending could have been them rebuilding after all, and showing a thematic "we're going to rebuilt it in a better way", both the city and the people. (Also, as for the other oscar nominees, the ones this year are really good! Though I almost wish they had gone with Frozen instead of HTTYD. HTTYD is my favorite franchise, period, but while its visuals are breathtaking and the story is emotional, it's also riddled with plot holes and OP characters and inconsistencies. Frozen wasn't subversive enough, true, but it had a solid story and execution and animation. I still love Dragons, but I love it enough that I can criticize the parts I dislike without my love for it fading. Personally? Rooting for Klaus. The animation style is superb)

@akiriith5 жыл бұрын
Roi Itzkovich i love httyd, a lot, and I always and forever will... and I love frozen as well. So to me it's hard to pick, but honestly, Frozen was so much more solid than HTTYD3. It broke its series' premise (we'll fight for our dragon friends and we'll change the world) to keep the ending similar to the books (ie their separation, which the books handle much better), dropped plot threads (Drago??? His alpha randomly appearing in the HW), has undeniable OP characters (a small crew of 6, sans dragons, took down an ARMADA). It may be visually gorgeous but it's absolutely not worthy of an Oscar, objectively speaking. Frozen has the visuals and story and a lot less issues than HTTYD. I do think Dragons 1 and maybe 2 deserved an Oscar, but the third one? Vs frozen? Naaaaah.

@roiitzkovich45455 жыл бұрын
I disagree on so many ways. 1. Hans wasn't a compelling villain because I predicted his true personality from the moment Anna and Kristoff met each other. 2. The twist at the end of the first film about sisters's family love wasn't very great because, while it was surprising, it wasn't built up throughout the story well. We didn't see enough clues or effects of sisterhood being just as strong as true love in the story (if any). It literally came out of nowhere. Surprising doesn't equal compelling (maybe for you it is so I won't judge). 3. If a concept of subverting established expectations was done previously with the same IP, it doesn't mean the sequal has to do the same. If it wasn't a sequal to Frozen than I think you wouldn't have had these thoughts. It wants to do it's own thing, being a study about the history of that world and focus on action and world-building. Frozen 1 wasn't even praised for it's SURPRISES, just for it's soundtrack and characters (which btw SUCK). 4. At the beginning it was told that the mere reason they decided to go to the forest wasn't the siren Elsa heard (I'm mean, it was certainly a motive, but not THE motive). They went to the forest because Arendelle was affected by the spirits and the troll chief told them that Arendelle has no future without finding the truth. If the town was to be destroyed, while the expectation subversion would've been a thing, it will also be such a spit in the face of why they even came to the forest in the first place. Elsa, or a queen in general, won't leave her ruled kingdom without a strong enough motive (both for her and for her kingdom). A siren you hear isn't enough of an excuse, but for the sake of SAVING YOUR KINGDOM it is. If you didn't like it as much than fine, but this video will undeservely affect some people's opinions negatively towards this movie just because of you, a man who presented SUBJECTIVE and PERSONAL issues with the movie and will push undeserved negativity towards it. At least I'm rooting for Klaus or Weathering With You to win this year over the boring ass Missing Link, the unnecessary Toy Story 4 and the disappointing How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World. I would easily say Frozen 2 deserved a nomination more than these 3 movies because it at least had some effort and was entertaining throughout, even with some small missed potentials here and there (and I don't even like Frozen 1 so there isn't bias here).

In the first Frozen Elsa was the catalyst who initiated the challenge to overcome, but they gave two villains to lead the audience through the story and provide immediate peril. In Frozen 2, there were no direct villains. The conflict took place inside the sisters, and each one had to descend into the depths and face themselves and their own fears. Elsa had to confront her powers and accept them, and Anna needed to face her dependence on Elsa and become an independent person, no longer simply following her sister around. They needed to find their own strength and master it. Disney has never done a movie on this level before. It was about time they did. They needed to grow up. They also needed to make the events of the ending clearer so they didn't look so forced. Maybe in the next movie.

i think it was bittersweet to have the sisters separated. i know theyre close by, but its still not the same. and i even though i thought Arendelle shouldve been destroyed as well for the purpose of the theme, its not a great message to send. Because i think the message is: you can right the wrongs of your ancestors. you dont have to repeat their mistakes. but that doesnt mean that you have to be punished for their sins. its like saying that the descendants of Hitler, or germany, should be tortured bc of what he did to Jews. And besides, there are literally no consequences to the first Frozen either. Elsa unfreezes everything in seconds, and there is no retaliation from the kingdom. they literally ice skate at the palace days later. not only that, but how could the movie end leaving thousands of ppl homeless including our leads. and you couldnt kill Elsa or Olaf bc people meet them in the parks. they´re also building Arendelle at the parks. its like saying Ariel shouldve stayed a mermaid at the end of her film or Rapunzel shouldve lost Flynn in order to have consequences. even though we analyze the film as adults, its still a childrens movie, theres no way disney couldve done that.

@@monabohamad2242 There were a lot of depressing and sad moments in the movie already. Yes, Elsa and Olaf were revived, but imagine the kids seeing Elsa dying and Olaf fading in front of their eyes for the first time. Nothing can erase that! When he said lead characters he meant Elsa, Olaf and Anna. Kristoff was shoved to the side, but for the others it was quite a dark journey.

Exactly! Elsa “went too far” and she paid the price, Ana realizes this and decides to right the wrongs from the past and she did so do heroically. It only made sense that at least the kingdom will have a small loss which is totally materialistic and could be rebuilt.

The happy ending in the first movie felt EARNED. In the second, it felt like it was just given.

Toy Story 4 shouldn't have been nominated. We didn't need a Toy Story 4. Toy Story 3 was a perfect way to end it.

I enjoyed this very much, even though I overall prefer Frozen 2 to Frozen 1 musically and just character wise. Frozen was great the first time, but I feel it doesn't stand up upon rewatching it.

im certain the kingdom was written to be destroyed in an earlier script, probably in the second to last draft, but some exec vetoed it because they didnt want to mess with any castle merchandise.

I agree with you about the ending- it was too happy! I also think Arendelle should've been destroyed, but I'd also would have like to see a little more patriotism (couldn't think of a better word) from the sisters or at least one of them, preferably Anna, to make her decision to destroy the dam, and with it her home, have more meaning. I'm afraid I have issues with Elsa leaving Arendelle and her people behind to go live in the woods, as I feel this ending defeats the purpose of the first film where the sisters were finally united after spending so many years seperated. She didn't feel anxious about ruling, she just wanted to know about herself and her powers, and so I feel Elsa could still fulfill her duties a a queen and still know her place in the world.

“If Arendelle is the villain in the story, than Arendelle must pay” That’s so wrong isn’t it?
@axoNNNessj5 жыл бұрын
I think they decided to give it a (kind of) happy ending because the movie was very dark already. Also it fits with the two sides of a bridge theme because Anna saved the forest and Elsa saved arendelle, while Anna ended up becoming queen of Arendelle and Elsa moved to the forest.
@riccardoleone42655 жыл бұрын
The problem with your kind of ending is that Elsa is too powerful at this point in the story. Someone could have said that Elsa had all the powers necessary to stop the wave. Like she had. The only way to make her not intervene in the destruction of Arendelle was to keep her frozen, or unwilling to intervene.

This is like what the first Frozen did too....as it had originally set up Elsa to turn villain (but scrapped it due to “let it go”:they loved her too much to take this turn)

I agree 100%. Especially about the pacing. Even if the movie kept this ending but added more to it so that it didn't feel so rushed, I would have been happier with it.
@jaeda18855 жыл бұрын
idk if y'all realize it but the solution to your problem regarding the ending would've been just letting elsa die. the sequence of the happy ending began with elsa because the plot relies on what happens to elsa. so elsa should've died basically.
@nattywp81185 жыл бұрын
Actually, not really. It could be easilly done by unfrozen Elsa after Arendelle was destroyed! Like they've paid the tribute to the spirits or something with Arendelle's doom.
