In this video I will show you very common problem on many Honda vehicles both 4 cyl and V6. If your Honda has a loud grinding or squealing noise, you may need to replace the o ring on the hi and low pressure hose on the power steering pump. Also make sure you have proper amount of power steering fluid in the reservoir. This is a simple and inexpensive fix, and worth trying before spending more money on replace other steering components.

After a decade of cold morning whining and whizzing, I read this. Had the signature frothy/bubbly fluid. Awesome fix - 1 hour to fetch the parts, $8 including a bottle of fluid at the dealer, and 30 mins to do the job. A lot of fluid leaked, so be careful and use rags to protect belts, etc. Using a short (or cut down) 10 mm was key. Thanks so much - worked like a charm. Side note: the parts guy at the dealership knew exactly where these o-rings were when I started talking - no part numbers or anything required. I guess it is common.

One more tip to add - there are some articles on the Honda forums that talk about the "new" power steering reservoir with the white dot on it. If you don't have this, make sure you look it up before tackling this project. Since you are draining fluid and removing hoses anyway, you'd want to spend the extra $17 to knock this out at the same time. No kidding that the front facing screw is a bear to access. Finally I picked up a 10mm box wrench at Home Depot with the smallest profile possible. By moving the power steering reservoir up and to the right, I was able to make just enough room to get my big hands in there. With the right tool it took 20 minutes. Only needed a bottle and a half of power steering fluid after using a turkey baster to pull out as much ps fluid out of the reservoir as possible. That way I didn't make as much of a mess when pulling off the hose to the pump. Great recommendation of keeping the reservoir lid off to allow air to escape. As always, great video! I always look for your Honda videos before tackling a new project.

@user-hb9jz7ne3w

@@lard1892 No kidding! In my case i think moving around the reservoir exposed a cracked (old) hose that needed replacing. It allowed air to slowly seep into the system and I think the air is what causes the Honda pumps to make noise even after the primary repair is completed. It's difficult to pinpoint, and you have to shoot the parts cannon at the power steering system to finally figure it out. I also had to eventually replace the high pressure hose to get all of the gremlins out.

Couldn't thank you enough for this simple fix to power steering noise. Was told by the dealer needed new power steering pump costing hundreds of $$. Replacing the o rings did the trick and for just a few dollars. If you're having issues with noise or minor leaking it's worth a try.

Hey, this worked a charm for my 2009 Ody. About a year ago PS started to have the classic whine/growl, began to need fluid occasionally, and steering became harder and harder to turn, especially at low/no speeds. Now it's quiet and easy to turn. Getting the bottom bolt out with my shorter fingers was a real pain. Cleaning the area well and moving some hoses helped. Also removing the PS reservoir from it's bracket and lowering it kept fluid loss to a minimum.

Thanks for posting this video. I’ve got 210,399 miles on my 2008 Honda Odyssey. Literally the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. It wasn’t until just recently that I had to start doing repairs on this vehicle. When I tell people I made it to 200,000 miles on the entire original engine same alternator same starter nothing ever replaced nobody believes me. Outside of maintenance and parts that were supposed to be replaced at certain times that’s it. It’s a shame that Honda has gone away from reliable gas motors to hybrid shit.

Went to the stealership, they charged me $21.85 for the two O-rings and fluid. Then the guy told me that the orange ring was for the high-pressure hose and the black ring was for the low pressure hose (WRONG!!) I didn’t re-watch your video, and ended up installing them like the dealer said. Let’s just say it was not pretty. Foam everywhere. So I reversed the position of the O-rings as per your video, and now everything works perfectly. Thank you!

Great video! When the bolt on mine was tightened by the previous installer, it just happened to “land” where my normal box-end wrench couldn’t get a bite on it before hitting the motor mount (even a 12-point thin-wall wrench). The solution for me was an offset wrench (one example is Craftsman #CMMT44350, which one of my local Ace Hardware stores had ONE of in stock). The offset made it possible to gain enough additional clearance with the pump pulley to get a bite on the bolt. Another tip: as soon as I put a little force on the hose from the pump fitting back to the reservoir, the hose cracked - so I’m glad I’d bought another one prior to starting the job. (My van is an 07 with 203K miles.) This is also the perfect time to replace your PCV valve if you haven’t done that lately.

After the bolt cracked loose on the low pressure side I was able to get my index fingers in to unscrew it. Put it back in the same way. Like others, I bent the metal wiring harness holder out of the way for easier access. Nice and quiet for 2+ weeks now. 2008 Pilot - 172,000 miles.

Replaced both O-Rings and noise was gone immediately, I didn't even need to bleed out the air, amazing. Before it would whine and foam up I have a 2000 Honda accord v6 and it was very tough removing that 10mm lower section. I had to move the alternator wire and remove the hose but still it was hard to get to the nut. I found out that using a flat spanner wrench, SUPER THIN and small, with it I was able to easily get in there and open it. My flex wrench would not work the head was too big, so a flat wrench or a stubby wrench is absolutely necessary. Ive heard an offset wrench or curved wrench can work too

I had real trouble accessing that 10mm bolt underneath the low pressure hose. Ended up taking off loosening the bolt on the pulley for the power steering pump, then taking the serpentine belt off the pulley and removing the pulley from the pump. Then unbolted the pump to be able to move it to access that one bolt. I had a 10mm open end box wrench but after more than an hour of messing with it simply couldn't get it to work. The closed box end on mine was a ratcheting end, so it was too thick to fit over the nut (very little space between the edge of the nut and the plastic piece that inserts into the pump). If I have to do it again, I'm just going to buy a small closed end, non-ratcheting 10mm wrench and hope that fits over and works as is shown in the video. The O-rings were cheap - $2 each. And the repair worked like a charm.

It Helped a lot I am not losing Fluid level like I use to but still on cold mornings like below 40F it makes some noise noise, not as loud or as much as it use to, after a little bit then goes away for the day. I was hoping the fluid and its conditions would of completely solved my problem but looks like it has not but helped it alot. If I need to replace the O-Rings which I suspected this video will be a great reference. hopefully the part numbers are the same for a 2007 model year

Just did mine and as others have noted you want to slide the rag under the crank belt. You can't get any ratchet wrenches in since there is no space. Also put a lot more rags under the lower o ring.

I'm having this issue with my 2006 Accord and I am about to do this same job. Food for thought, since the power steering system was sucking in air (I too have frothy steering fluid), I'm thinking the fluid should be removed and replaced as the atmospheric moisture may still be in this hydraulic system.

My 2014 do not have a whining noise but more of a rubber rubbing noise when you turn the wheel very fast. Like blowing up 2 balloons and rubbing it together.

Just fixed my issue with this video. I'd like to point out that for my car when I pulled the hoses out, a lot if steering fluid spilled out from the hose and the pump itself. Not sure why, but definitely made a bigger mess than expected.

Although I no longer own our 2007 Odyssey, I do recall in 2011 when we encountered the issue, my local dealership replaced the pump, a new reservoir, a couple of the O-rings under some Service Bulletin and flushed the fluid. You may want to check with Honda is any service bulletin on your model.

I found your video on power steering very useful. My 2009 Honda accord lately has given me cause for concern. I notices the noise and bought a fluid thinking that was the cause because it went low. But to my surprise, it was bubbling instead of the noise to go down. Now where is the problem, is it the same in the video showed you replace some two objects?
@StephenCao1
@StephenCao1 6 жыл бұрын
Rick T Read online that Honda has extended the warranty for the power steering pump to 100k miles but Honda dealer won’t say so and said to come in to have the problem diagnosed for 138 dollars. I changed the o-ring per the video and it does not seems to have resolve the whining noise and air bubbling in the reservoir. Thinking to go to a local auto shop to have the steering pump replaced...

Good video. My wife called and complained about the loud noise during the drive and I told her keep driving. I don't know why suddenly the whole fluid reservoir was completely empty? I filled the fluid and the noise went away an it is amazing that the pump survives without PS fluid. I watched to video and decided to do it myself. I used a big syringe to suck out all the fluid in the reservoir since I just refilled it, followed the instructions from video and got it done in 1 hour and the total cost was $8 from Honda dealership. thanks

Thanks for a great video! Question: did you consider replacing the power steering fluid?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to do the service, then just suck up the old fluid and replace it with new fluid. Do that couple of times with the engine running and turning the wheel left and right. But the fix shown in this video has nothing to do with a fluid service.

GREAT VIDEO!! I am no mechanic but sure as heckfire binge-watched KZbin Honda Odyssey power steering pump videos all night and researched enough to feel confident enough that I might actually step up to the plate this time & be a man of action & not reaction, knowing what I do vis a vi all sorts of research came to the conclusion that I could do my scientific-methodology and start by using the keep it simple & very cost-effective & fingers crossed that will get me (and hopefully you as well!), But do Yourself a Big Favor and watch this guy's video right now before you get bummed & call a shop for a stupid (P&L start to finish-new pump-install job!). You'll likely end up saving yourself a lot of cash!! Worst off, you'll be well aware of just how alot of autoshops make a killing swapping out a damn [O- ring] and slap in an unnecessary brand new pump at 40% - heck 140% markup!!) all for your foolishness, sloth or just plain ignorance!! Not trying to offend anyone, but let's be straight up about the miraculously wonderful world of KZbin DIY Videos!! This guy here nails it! My Regards, Damien

P Gyore The wheels are up to make it less strain on the pump. An easier way is to just pull the front wheels up on a couple sheets of newspaper. This makes it very easy to turn the wheel from right to left.

I've asked three different dealers to address this noise over the last few years...they claimed there was not a problem. I could hear the whine. They are now on my Sh*t list. Known problem Known recall. Known easy fix. So what's your vote ..Are they trying to hide something, unintentionally stupid or willfully ignorant? This made it easy. Didn't think I had to practice self defense on Honda...proved wrong again.
