My neighbor asked for my help. I had an old SSD drive and decided to install it in her laptop. Somehow I pulled the latch for the keyboard ribbon cable out. After 2 hours of fighting with it I looked up solutions on youtube. This video saved me. thanks!
@penguinsavage97164 жыл бұрын
Alternate fix: The ribbon that gets clipped in has two sides, one with exposed connections and one covered in plastic. Cut a piece of electrical tape and stick it to the end of plastic side. This will give it just enough thickness to make the connection and hold it in place. If you're worried about it working loose you can either tape it down or put a bit of hot glue on it (the glue is not conductive, and easy to peel off)
@danvos65423 жыл бұрын
The electrical tape suggestion worked for my situation where the black piece was fine but the white base was cracked. The connection was not tight but after adding the electrical tape on the ribbon cable and then giving it a solid push into the connector, the connection was tight enough to work again. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for mentioning that some clips attach differently. hearing that, I got out my botany hand glass and looked at my clip, and saw that unlike the ones you illustrated, mine is actually attached at each contact pointnot out at the edges. The metal of each contact forms a tight C shape, as viewed from the side, with the clip swinging like a gate in the top part of the four Cs and the flat ribbon inserting below the gate with the lower part of the C shape making contact with the underside of the ribbon. So all I had to do was reinsert my gate into the C's that I had pulled it out of before I understood that there was a latching mechanism here. It wasn't trivial because I had to get the angle right and I had to bring just the right amount of force to bear on a tiny little thing.

Will the connection work without the clip?
@PC_Monkey5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the ribbon cable will still sit in the port fine. However, it will be very easy for it to fall out. You can try using electrical tape or something else to hold it in if you have lost the clip

cool vid! like the slight NY/New England accent. When I needed to replace my SSD cable the retaining clip somehow popped off. no indication of damage though. doesn't like quite like yours, and the other piece actually moves a little on the MoBo. can I send a pic?

Nice vid and I learn a lot but it seems like this would only be useful if you have a donor board as not all connector size is same..

Yes, in order to replace a clip, you would need a replacement of the same size lol.

Hi, I watched this video. But it wasn't helpful because, in my situation, and I think for most, it isn't the clip itself it breaks or it doesn't break alone. Rather, the piece holding the clip which is on the motherboard breaks. Just as you pointed out that the clip is fragile, so are the sides and if the clip breaks out of the sides, usually one or both of the sides do also. The question is, how can you replace that? How can you replace that rectangular frame that the clip holds onto?
@PC_Monkey2 жыл бұрын
This video shows how to replace a clip as its the only thing most people can do with limited skills. If the port breaks, then like most motherboard ports, its not easily fixable. It would need to be removed from the board and replaced or the board itself would need to be replaced.

alright, I have been through a handful of videos but can't find one on replacing the ribbon connector itself...
@PC_Monkey4 жыл бұрын
You would have to desolder that from the motherboard and solder on a new one. Usually more of a pain then its worth. Also, on printed circuit boards, which most are these days, thats not a very effective operation anyway

Idk if you will reply but I broke the metal lines inside the clip that holds the ribbon

Then the port is broken. You most likely need a new motherboard at this point unless its worth it to get the motherboard repaired. It can sometimes be more expensive though then just purchasing a used board on ebay

What if the clip got broken? Is there some solution?
@PC_Monkey Жыл бұрын
If any component breaks, you would have to replace it. You can sometimes find them on sites like Ebay, Amazon, etc. If not, you may have to buy a used or bad / 'as is' motherboard and take it off there for use on yours.
