This homeowner saved about $10,000 when we were able to repair this leaking tile shower. Instead of having to remove the entire shower, we were able to just remove the pan, the curb, and the bottom row of wall tile. While this repair is done routinely on older types of shower waterproofing, it is much more difficult to do correctly when using a Schluter Kerdi or foam system. This video explains in detail how to do it the right way.
If you would like to see the forensic diagnosis of why this tiled shower leaked, here is the video link: • SCHLUTER KERDI SHOWER ...

I love how all this new way stuff needs repairs. I've never needed to repair the old Oatey rubber membrane. I spoke with a Shluter rep, asked him why Tile Coach put up a video on Schluter leaking after the 24 hour test. Repairs said its not a pool. It's made to withstand 24 hours bit no one ever keeps water in a shower that long. Very poor answer. The main thing is that it eventually leaked. Sometimes the old way seems like it works best. That rubber pan just won't leak as long as you don't puncture it with nails or screws

The original Kerdi system was likely installed incorrectly, nothing to do with new or old. Wedi, KBRS, and other similar foam board systems are easy to use, but an installer still needs to educate themselves on how to make it work right. Clearly they didn't in this original install.

Ive yet to pull out a rubber liner that hadnt leaked. Thing is, thats why i called in to tear them out. Leak at the drain and at every corner. All comes back to proper installation, regardless the product

Did you even watch the original video showing why it failed? The installer wasn't experienced with kerdi and this was his first time using it and didn't use a corner band in the area it was leaking. So don't blame the product. There's pros and cons to different methods but if kerdi was always leaking and inferior, they wouldn't be in business

Honestly it’s people who don’t know how to do kerdi correctly what causes these new showers to fail. If you do it right, it won’t ever happen. Take extra steps to make sure there are backups to a possible failure and your fine. I’ve never had a bonded shower fail since I’ve started using them. It’s all about time and effort put into your job.

I absolutely LOVE the way you diagnose the problem, though I like the Schluter system, I have always wondered the defined importance of following every installation detail. Customers ask why it has to take so long to build a shower and man I feel like wackin them one, quality has to take careful planning and most of all careful, careful Installation. In the long run it is cheaper to do it right the first round...don't I know it! Great work you guys do, absolutely awesome walk-through. Have a great week! Andrew. Ontario 🇨🇦

Thanks Issac for the informative and instructional videos on how to do a pan replacement without a complete tear out. I also like your investigative approaches to such failures and the cause of the failures. That insight helps us in our approach and product selections. I had a much larger company with several crews and fully subbed out all my tile work. We generally only roughing in the shower framing and there forward the tile person would do the waterproofing tile setting grouting, etc. My person retired and I can’t find any qualified individuals in my area in York Pennsylvania that can do the high-end work to the degree we need them for so we have taken on that aspect ourselves. Since Covid, I have downsized and I’m doing the showers myself and our company has fully focused on kitchen and bath work entirely mainly bathrooms. I’m very interested in the revolutionary shower system and sheet membrane. I’ve also directed some others in the trade to the Flow FX drains. Keep doing what you’re doing and thanks again from another brother in the field!! Your awesomeness astounds me!!

Funny how I just did this type of work in a bathroom, this shower had subway tiles it was a pain to remove them. I’m working go on a second shower in the same house. I used the Schluter pans and membrane for both. Both pans passed the flood test but after seeing your videos I ran out and bought some red guard and applied it on top of the membrane. I haven’t got any call backs on other showers I’ve done but it doesn’t hurt to be safe. Thank you for your videos keep on spreading your knowledge.

So I've been to Schluter's installation workshop where you can see ~15 teams working on the same shower pan assembly. It is awesome training but one thing I noticed the most? People putting down too little or gone off thinset on the joints where two boards come together. They give you a specific size trowel but if you don't hold it correctly you can end up with very little thinset under that band, and then it's pretty much guaranteed you'll get a failure there. Two inches of band either side of the joint is not enough coverage in my opinion. I'd use more thinset and do 4 inches (8inch wide bands) to give yourself a little more forgiveness and ensure a good install. Very interested in the RSS board. Cool video

Hey issac, nice job. I have had to do this twice in the last two years, both showers were like 8-10 years old and both had failed at the drain and had cracked grout on the curbs, I was not the original installer. I had never done this type of repair before both home owners didn’t have the money to do a complete shower redo so I repaired them with kerdi in this same fashion. It worked out great! Had zero reports of issues. Glad to see I’m not the only one willing to roll the dice and repair the floor and curb and replaced bottom row of tile as you did here. Only difference was I used red guard along the joint on the wall just to be sure it wasn’t gonna be an issue down the road. Again, nice job bro.

Thank you for your great videos. I have seen your processing error in your old schlüter Kerdi video. The strips in the edge area must always overlap. That is, the edge strips must be led all the way into the corner. The Kerdi waterproofing membrane may be glued with flow adhesive. The edge strips and corners must be glued with a two-component resin, otherwise it is not tight. The thin membrane has the advantage that it is very flexible and therefore remains tight for a long time when the fundation moves.

It's taken me a week so far and I'm only at the "expose backing behind tiles" stage. 😅 We've been using a dishwasher hose rigged up to our sink, connected to a handheld sprayer taped to our shower curtain rod while the shower is out of commission... (I'm only removing part of the wall so a plumber can move our shower valve. The shower is still usable with plastic sheeting taped over the 2'x3' hole.)

I agree the flowfx drain and the solid curb are nice. However, the RSS seems like the exact same system WITH and extra step of applying the membrane on the pan. My understanding is the failures in any of these systems is in the corners and seams. Not with the overall structure or thickness of the membranes. I know redgard/aqua defense etc probably void warranties. But it really is safe insurance to just throw a few coats down on the finished pans to ensure you have a nuclear proof shower.
@BADMONTESS

Also use Anti-hydro in your grout to waterproof it too, but thats too old school. Liquid Insurance is what I call it. Been in the tile game since 83, do mostly high end custom residentials. I copy you. I feel you can never go too overboard by simply adding a couple layers of a wp memb, simply pennies and minutes versus a failure. You give water somewhere to go, it will find it.

Hardi backer walls is a plus in this situation....I find that it delaminates the first layer when you have to do a repair on it opposed to cement board that is damn near impossible to pull tile off of without ripping it to shreds. Unless the cement board has a waterproof membrane, then you can get tile off without total destruction

Thanks for both of these video series of Kerdi Board done wrong. After watching this video, I had plan to DIY a Kerdi system but now on the fence for 2 reason. The possibility of doing a repair in the future seems delicate than the old way and how the Kerdi curb is hollow. I was replacing my tub drain and broke the pvc drain pipe. One thing led to another and now the tub and walls are removed. The goal now is to make it into a shower. Tile coach, I need your expertise … Tucson, AZ.

Too much thin-set between the membrane layers creates a wicking path for water and leads to water retention / mold behind the tile. There was way too much thin-set behind that tile and between the membranes. It looks like the old school installer floated a mud bed over the kerdi. You have to flatten foam board systems from the back by fixing the framing, Shimming or wet setting the board and fastening after the wet set hardens. Also let the install fully cure before flood testing. Some times more is not better follow the instructions and the system will work. For every failure there are tens of thousands of successful installs for every system out there.

I recently did a DYI bathroom reno and decided to try out the Kerdi system. I'm not a professional, just a dumbass who watches KZbin videos and thinks he can do stuff (it usually turns out pretty good!). Anyway, my take on it is that I will never use a foamboard product like Kerdi again. My reason - the stuff is really lightweight, and I worry about how a repair (like this one) will be affected by the "fragility" of a product like foam board. In fact, in my project, I had to re-solder some piping after the board and tile was installed because of a pin hole leak. I had access to the piping via an access panel in a closet behind the shower, but I can tell you that sweating a pipe near a foam board product wasn't fun. Maybe these are good products for pros, but I'd stay away from them if you are a DYI-er and do a bathroom once every 10 years or so.

I don't know why people still use Kerdi, it was great when it first came to the US because there were not many other options, now with technology advancing so much, there's better, assessable cheaper options. Hey Coach I'm a subscriber and a new house owner i took your advice a few months back and went with Schluter and now I'm mortified. Lets use our heads here if you look back at your kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHfTZ6Sfi9OCaqc failed video at 13:23 of that video you mentioned the wicking properties of thin set, if you look at the video you will see the thin set is wet the whole entire run of the Kerdi band and is darkened so it was all wet, i agree but even if the inside corner was place the thin set is still wicking all around the Kerdi band because a thin layer of thin set adheres the Kerdi band to the floor pan and the Kerdi membraned wall so once the water hits that microscopic layer of thin set it will wick between the Kerdi band and the kerdi floor pan and delaminate. I agree that the missing inside corner made it fail quicker but it would have failed anyway (as you said wicking thin set). RSS will do the same, you need to start testing thin set and its wicking properties. Modified and unmodified. I just finished my shower a week ago doing Schluter to the tee as per instructions and using Schluter all set thin set , Schluter floor pan, inside corners, outside corners, and Kerdi band all per Schluter instructions, so I'm curious if it will fail. Modified or unmodified? i hope you do a test on wicking properties test of thin set. Maybe one week old cured thin set in a bucket of water , or better yet a one inch layer of thin set in a painters tray on a angle half in water half out and see if it wicks? Maybe this is a loosing battle and a fiberglass pan is the only way to go. I'm not blaming you I'm just playing Devils advocate, keep posting brother..

There is no such thing as 100% water proofing with custom shower pan. People don’t understand this. If you follow the instructions and do a proper job. It will take years to fail, but it will eventually fail. If you do a mistake in the pan, it will be fast. In wood construction houses, custom shower pan should be banned by building codes.

@@Faruk651 I think you're right, unfortunately for me my shower is complete and even though i did it to a tee of Schluter's instructions and all their products i feel it will leak in a few years after seeing this video.

@@phishertube If you didn’t make any crucial mistakes, I think you are fine for 5-10 years. If you start seeing a lot of kerdi failures in the next 5 years. Rip it right out. This system has no room for mistakes.

I have a question. When you are putting those pieces in the corners and over the cracks what is being used to put those down?

This is why I’m afraid to have my fiberglass new construction 4 piece shower walls/floor replaced with tile. What if i get someone who cuts corners like the original installer on this job. My house is 16 years old and no leaks. It’s ugly but NO LEAKS. Function is better than beauty.

That cement glue does not meet code here in midwest as far as I know they won't let us use that to meet the 2. I don't see why manufacturers don'take abs and Pvc for a piece of mind and cover Every1s rear.

Question? Does it matter if the mud you put on the floor flows one way and the mud on the tile flows the opposite way? And is it the same process when tilling a ceiling?

Note to self: Do Not Use Kerdi Board products. I thought I was going to go with this product/process, but not anymore…. We’ve been sold an idea that may not do what it’s supposed to. I get that there could be installer error here, but it looks like the slightest mistake ruins the entire project.

Do you use banding and corners on all the RSS pans you do. That one didn't have the morter type coating I think. 👌

I’m looking at putting in a culture marble base for the shower with tile walls. Is culture marble a good product in your opinion? Currently have a tile base that has failed similar to this video.
