I have a 2002 polo classic, I tried all options but it seems that car has ghosts in it. The car is giving fault codes of bad map sensor. I replaced it first with an after market product, didn't work so I bought the very unreasonably expensive vw part..and the car won't even start anymore with I plugged. With the aftermarket sensor it starts but it hesitates when accelerating. Please help with any advice Scotty..I'm in Namibia by the way. I love your videos so much.

Help me please to figure out the problem in my jeep wrangler 2014, 22000mi , seal was broken between Cadillac converter and engine black, fule consumption was 13 mpg after new seal same mpg ,I reset computer by tuching - + wires and got 18 mpg local (wow) 4 days later I drove 85 mph on highway about 30 minutes when I got off Highway jeep was vibrating , idol was low and make noise when push gas, RPM doesn't go up unless I push hard , I will be thankful to you like before you helped me .

just did this to my 08 TSX and it made a world of difference i was having the idle drop when breaking at stop lights or when shifting into any gear it dropped idle to like 600 this keeps its at a nice and steady 850 - 900 ish its feels way smoother

Wow, I did the same job on my accord 07 and it actually solved the idling issue on my car, before doing the throttle body cleaning whenever I put the car in drive or turn on the ac , the rpms drop which resulted in the vibrariin. After cleaning it the car rpms have improved from 650 to say 850 while idling and no vibrations, secondly after this whenever I turn AC on , the rpms just increases 100 for a second and comes back to 850, and no vibration. It feels perfect and even driving I feel more power in my car with getting better acceleration output speed. Thumbs up to Scotty .... You rock 👌

My 96 civic was idling poorly when I had it in neutral and at red lights. and sometimes I was worried the car was going to die because of how low the rpm was.I did the same steps as your said and now my civic idles right below 1rpm and it drives amazing! feels like I actually have some torque now.yes i know its a civic but still..and it picks up speed way better than before ..before every time I shift into gear and gave it gas it seemed to pudder and the throttle didn't respond well. thanks again. cost me about 6 bucks at the O'Reilly's

Back when i had crown vic she was idling low and the mechanics drove me crazy they changed oil pump and spark plugs and coils ! But the problem was not fixed yet , after one month one guy cleaned my throttle and the idling problem was fixed ! It worked!! Thanks Scotty! I have a 2011 Toyota Sequoia and had just replaced the battery. After I replaced the battery, I started the vehicle and motor was very quiet couldn’t tell if it was on. I started backing up on my driveway and it turned off. I turned it back on and drove to gas station, again it turned off as I was turning into gas stall. I wondered why just changing the battery would relate to this problem. Well looked up info on KZbin and found Scotty Kilmer’s video. Did just like he said to do, cleaned out throttle body, test drove vehicle and now running with normal idle rpm. Was about 500rpm after battery change, then about 1,000rpm after cleaning throttle body.

I just did this in my 2010 crv. But I didn't push the throttle manually, in other channels they say u have to turn the ignition on and have someone press the gas pedal. Other wise u might break the some thing in the electronic throttle. What the right way Scotty ? Love u r videos brother.... Best wishes from NYC

You are correct. You don't want to manually manipulate an electronic throttle body. Doing what you did is the proper way.

NEVER do such cleaning with the car on, notice I disconnected the battery doing this. Any throttle can be opened by your fingers or a wooden tool so not to scratch anything.

Scotty Kilmer Hi Scotty. Actually if you open the throttle body with your fingers don't you risk ruining it? I've heard that it will burn the motor in the throttle body on newer cars. Also it has enough force to clamp shut and take your finger off.

Best to remove the throttle body (only takes a few minutes more) and thoroughly clean front and back of throttle body plate. And be careful, jamming your fingers into that throttle plate can mess up the throttle body motor that's on the side.

You can't do a repair on a Toyota poor idle without checking the IAC! (Idle air control, most common cause of idle issues). The dirty butterfly valve/throttle body doesn't affect the idle on these engines unless it's stuck slightly open, causing fast idle issues instead of low idle. You need to start by removing the IAC from the throttle body and clean it with carb cleaner or similar. Then use wd40 to free up the shuttle inside. This shuttle rotates to create an air passage that bypasses the butterfly valve and allows the engine to run while the butterfly valve is closed. (This is why dirty throttle body issues don't cause slow idle) They can suffer from a carbon build up that causes them to stick in the position they sat in while the engine was warm but this is no good when the engine is cold and requires more air to run smoothly. This is why the problem only persists when the engine is cold. You should also do a simple vacuum leak test before taking anything off the car so you can eliminate vacuum leaks as a cause. The rubber gaitor that attaches the MAF to the throttle body on these engines is a common failure and would also give issues with erratic idle.

Scotty, first I love your videos..... I cleaned my throttle body on my 98 Toyota Celica. I have big hands... you know what that means..... big fingers too. So it was a little difficult to get my fingers in enough to really clean. Other videos suggested using wire brushed or old toothbrushes. I thought the wire might put grooves in the metal so I used a toothbrush. I found wrapping an old t shirt around the toothbrush and soaking the material really helped to get in there and remove the grime. I still rough idle a little when warmed up but not like it was before. Thank for the videos. You are great.

Scotty Kilmer My '96 Honda Accord 2.2L had a low idle when I came to a stop and at a red light. At times my car even stalled in the middle of traffic! YIKES! I had no clue what the problem was so I turned to you for help! Thank you thank you! UrSo Kawaii I think the ideal idle is about 900 to 1000 RPM. Our '96 Accord 2.0 before is about a 1000 while my '97 CRV is about 800 to 1000 RPM.

thx for the quick video, i got a 2012 vw jetta s 2.0l. While i was driving the check engine light came up and i got a epc light The check engine codes were to some of the cylinders and ignition coil a primary/secondary So i changed out the spark plugs and wires, cleared the codes and it was good for a couple days till the check engine light came up stating the same codes.. Also, the epc light comes on every now and than driving it after an hour or two and what it does is it lacks acceleration power, and i cant get passed 50mph and the shifting kinda jerks This problem only happens when the epc light comes up.. so im gonna try this and hopefully get a new coil pack module and possibly a new throttle body.. I'll keep ya updated hopefully this cleaning keeps it good for atleast a couple weeks.

This is one thing for me to look into. Cheers for the video. My car was sitting for 2 weeks and when I went to start it up it was running and shaking with low RPMs like it was missing or running on 3 of 4 cylinders. After a while it started to run fine. I've checked the plugs they all look fine. It does it at random times like once every few weeks so It's not constant and very random but with the above video in mind I'll check the airbox.

In a Honda, there is an electronic idle transfer valve and servo that likes to goof up. It's purpose is to adjust the idle air for things like the AC turning on or the difference in engine load when you are in or out of gear. This has given me issues on all Hondas I have ever owned when they get around 120K miles on them. The symptom is that the car idles fine until you put it in gear, then RPM's drop enough to have a very rough idle or, even at times, for the engine to stall. When there is an issue, and the AC turns on and off, the engine dies then picks up again. When working correctly, the idle speed should be relative constant as you go from neutral to drive. It should also not surge and such when the AC is turning on and off at idle. It should even remain relatively constant as you turn and the power steering pump starts to load the engine. This valve is on the throttle body and adjusts idle air as needed via the engine computer. If it is bad, or as mine was, clogged with carbon, the car will not want to idle properly when in gear and when the AC is on. The actual throttle plate in my Accord is completely sealed when at idle. The air for idle goes through this idle air transfer port and valve on the throttle body assembly. If you adjust the throttle stop to open the throttle slightly, it will trip an engine fault code and your check engine light will come on. It will also not fix the real problem.

On the electronic throttle bodies I like having a buddy hold the gas pedal to the floor with the key on, engine off. And clean the throttle body with a soft bristle toothbrush and the cleaner. Works on most cars I've tried. And if your by yourself just get a piece of pipe or brick to hold the gas pedal down. Just keep any sensors on the intake tube plugged in so you don't set any codes.

I think I'm going to cry. Thank you very much! My 2010 Corolla only has 74000 miles on it. The battery was dying and I knew it. Then it finally went dead so I got a jump and went to auto zone and bought a new battery. It has been idling poorly ever since. It idles fine in park. Nice, smooth and quiet but drops to about 600 rpm in drive. And in reverse, it shakes and feels like it is going to die.

I have this same car Camry 2002 with the four cylinder engine. This is a common problem. The best thing to do here is to buy a new air filter, clean the MAF sensor and the throttle body. Also check for vacuum leaks within the intake tube.

On older Hondas, especially accords and preludes, they have a "Fast idle Thermo valve" that sits under the throttle body. This part has a few components inside it that can wear out and make your honda idle all kinds of crazy. If you have a ridiculously high idle and it sounds like your car is trying to play a song, you should either replace the valve or try cleaning it. It has a spring thats held together by a screw. sometimes the screw just comes out some and needs to be tightened back down. sometimes the parts inside break and require replacement. dont forget to clean out all the connecting pieces while you have it all apart, whether or not you are replacing the FITV But be very careful not to put it back together backwards. Water travels through this valve and if installed improperly it will shoot water directly into your engine. Not enough to kill it completely, but more than enough to cause serious problems.

I have an older 80's nissan hardbody pickup that i found with under 100k miles on it. It runs great and i haven't had many problems with it other than the small size of the cab which is actually a king cab but still kinda small for an average American guy. used to have an '86 toyota landcruiser wagon and would love to own a 70's fj40 series. my LC had 330k on a spent motor... it had become a project beyond my means of repair.

Man, i miss my 91 lincoln towncar....that 4.6L modular V8 was great. Reliable, had no power, but good ol mechanical throttle. I had to increase the idle on it with the bolt that the cable rested on because it had a vacuum leak because the intake was cracked and tape couldnt seal it all the way.

I drove my car from Washington to Arizona. There was a change in elevation by about 2000 feet. I was higher up in Arizona. My car was fluctuating idle and it would bogg down at times to the point where I would stall out. I did this technique and it wasn’t working at first. I had to disconnect the battery and hold the horn down to drain out the reserve part. To the point where I had to reprogram my radio stations. Started ruff at first but now idles just under 1000 rpm where it’s supposed to.

I bought a 2013 commuter car back in June for 10 grand from a used car lot and it was worth $13,500 on KBB and I thought it was a fuckin steal so I bought it but a few weeks later everyone that got in my car called me idiot because they thought it had transmission issues. Even the dealer told me this and they wanted me to pay 3 grand for their extended warranty. I had terrible mpg and very rough idle to the point where I thought the damn thing was gonna explode. Long story short I took it to a mechanic and he told me all I needed was a new O2 sensor and to clean the throttle body. I spent an extra $400 and again feel like I got the thing for a fuckin steal hahaha. Thanks again Scotty. You saved this college student from a financial disaster!!

My 2005 Camry with the same engine did that after I changed the battery. I gave it just enough gas where it was turning over just 2000 RPMs and it was fine after about 10 minutes.

This might be a problem you've never heard of, but here goes; I have a 2003 VW Golf 1.9l GT TDI PD150, 170k on the clock, and it runs perfectly when at operating temperature. I rebuilt the car from the ground up (bought with a blown engine for around 50c 3 years ago) and the engine i put in had 60k miles on it All the axhilleries are new / nearly new - i.e turbo, glowplugs, harness, coil, starter, aternator, battery etc etc 2 months ago my main brake light relay / servo broke and had to be replaced, which put the standard "Glow Plug Fault" light on my dash Ever since it went the car has struggled to start from cold at any temperature (tried at 30C and -10C takes the same amount of turns to get going) I've tried all the standard fixes i.e replaced everything to do with the starting procedure, and even changed the flywheel + gearbox + clutch on the slim chance it might have had something to do with it (plus the DMF was ruined anyway) It's the only fault the car's ever had and no matter what i try nothing seems to solve it - my only option i think i have left is a complete ECU reset to standard and custom Map to up the fuel flow on low engine temp Any thoughts on this / have you ever dealt with a problem like this before? Cheers

+Skyda well, obviously your glow plug system is not working, You could just rewire the stupid thing to run off an aftermarket starter switch and relay to power the glow plugs manually. I've done that many times on older cars.

Ok thanks scotty I do remember a spark plug coil spring coming apart but I just put it back thinking it was supposed to do that ill look at it and replace it and ill see if it fixed it thanks again

If applicable, it's also a good idea to take off the idle air control valve and give it a good cleaning. Often fixes poor idle as well.
