Thanks, I just saved my favorite chair! Your technique worked fine, with one change. The rubber mallet didn't remove the base. I've had the chair for about 10 years, so everything was pretty well seated. So I turned the chair upside down, and tapped the cylinder with a regular hammer, using a block of wood in between to spread the load. That worked great. I did have to sort of hang the chair, by putting the base on a couple of 2x4's that I had placed across two trash bins to hold them about 4ft. off the floor.

I have a chair, made circa 1978 that my 400pound+ son broke the spider base. I got the bottom of the cylinder out of the 'dead' spider without too much trouble. However, the top of the cylinder in the tilt mechanism of the seat has defied removal. I have used Blaster penetrating oil, WD-40 Penetrating oil, applied a propane torch to the thing, put it in a big bench vice and attacked it from above with both penetrating oil sprays and a punch whacked with a 2.5 pound sledge. Sprayed the expletive deleted thing with AeroKroil super bearing removal hyper penetrating oil all, put a 4 ft cheater on my monkey wrench and nothing as caused the upper end of the cylinder to budge a micron. Having said all that, your video is pretty good. Sometimes you have to remove the clip from the cylinder base, suspend the thing in a big machinist's vice and whack the hell out of the bottom of the cylinder to get it to release. Let your penetrating oil/fluid set over night if you have to. As the saying goes: Use a bigger hammer. I like the 2.5 pound mini-Mjollnir myself to "educate" things. If you have any ideas on how to break loose the top of my gas cylinder I'd appreciate it.
@thebumpchannel2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you given it a good try. I would keep applying the penetrating oil over a couple days and use a big plumbers wrench with a breaker bar for extra leverage.

@SteinerHaus Жыл бұрын
@@theBRT1955 I gave up and just replaced the frame and cylinder. Torched the thing, used Aerokroil pentrating oil over several days, worked up to a 4 ft cheater on the pipe wrench. It never budged a micron. Bought a length of quarter inch thick 3" wide steel and made a fitting to attach the seat back rest to the new seat base. I got whooped by the stuck cylinder, but the chair is now useable and adjustable. Good luck with your stubborn 'beastie'.

@@SteinerHaus after 4 or 5 doses of PB Blaster over a period of about three weeks and with the help of my son (who has squat lifted 405 -just to paint the picture for you), we finally achieved success. It was really just waiting for the chemical to seep in and do its work. But like your experience, the first few times we tried, it didn't budge "a micron". So, the chair is back up in my happy wife's office and all's well. Thanks for your wishes of good luck - that may have helped more than either of us know. Have a great day!

That's funny man. I'd been thinking about doing it. Unfortunately even a few months of use has basically friction welded the damn thing together. I've had the piston replaced like 3 times. They only last a month before they begin to fail. Kinda want to see if i can seal it in the highest position so it cant move down anymore. See, my base is made of steel. So it really seizes up and gets stuck. I think i had to hammer on mine for a good 40 minutes last time I had to remove it.

First, they are not universal. You better measure the body length before you order (here is a video how: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXnZk2edma6SoJI). Second, the black part is not actually the cylinder, it's a casing for the outside part of the piston. The casing can have different diameters, so it's not smart to remove it from the chair's base. Moreover, reusing the existing casing makes the replacement much easier. You don't need a mallet or anything, just remove a small clip at the bottom of the casing, and it will come off.
