this was it! thank you so much, other joystick that was still working didnt have any grease on it amd the one that had insane drift had it, so maybe it isnt meant to have it?
@RestoreTechnique3 жыл бұрын
I think the grease helps aid joystick movement, and is suppose to prevent wear on the contacts. But I think it also holds onto all the little particles of carbon contact instead of allowing them to fall down to the bottom or out the side. You're probably right, it's better without the grease.
@theaces36973 жыл бұрын
@@RestoreTechnique yeah i imagine it does help at least perhaps in theory, the PS5 controller i have had the grease on the joystick, i also opened up my xbox controller (which i have been using for 8 years now with no issues) i saw thaty is uses pretty much the same joystick and that didnt have grease but it has some kind of oil i think nothing came off when i rubbed it but it is slick to the touch, maybe the PS5 controllers just had too much applied?

this was exactly what my controller needed, thanks a lot man. i only use it for rocket league. was having weird issues of turning left randomly, thought it might be normal stick drift but i opened a joystick analyzer and it would randomly shift from 0 (below deadzone) to maximum left and back to normal. figured it was some sort of electrical issue and, seeing what these pieces look like pretty much confirmed that. i opened all of the sensor casings or whatever those orange or cyan boxes are, cleaned and rotated everything (putting off the worn bits onto the right joystick which is hardly used in rocket league) and hooked everything back up.. controller was good as new! for anyone else having issues in rocket league I would definitely recommend doing the same as you can just about double the already long lifespan of these joysticks

You are a godsend! I can't believe the stick drift has gone! The issue wasn't that bad, just the left stick occasionally drifting to the left. But I refused to play, seeing it get a little worse with each use. A game like Elden Ring needs precise control and timing, so I didn't want to wait until the drift got really bad. When it came to the disassembly, I struggled FOR AGES to dislodge the big clip. I had to fork out another £20 to get the spudgers etc. Turns out I needed a different tool to the one you were using to unclip the sides. When I finally got to the interior, some parts looked DIFFERENT to your controller... I was so afraid of damaging the coil, that I decided to simply clean it as it was. It was not covered in gunk. My PS4 controller never needed this kind of top-down clean, it never suffered from drift in 4 years of continuous usage. My PS5 controller suddenly developed the drift issue overnight, after 1 year of usage. I honestly lost all hope of the drift being fixed, since I thought I'd messed up the reassembly and couldn't get rid of all the dust. Then, when I booted up my PS5 again, no stick drift at all during 2 hours of test playing Elden Ring! It seems the remedy was to loosen up the parts, .

Thank you very much. Your video helped me opening up my controller and then I used isopropyl alcohol to clean the potentiometers. Now there's no stick drift. 😊
@dooleh842 жыл бұрын
I had to do this 4 times already in just a little over 7 months since I got this console brand new (the left stick started drifting in just ~2 months). 3 times it was for the left stick, once for the right. Since the second time, I just clean all 4 potentiometers whenever I take the controller apart. Such a shame that a well built controller like this has the worst potentiometers I've ever encountered... Also, the battery life could be way better.

If your intent is to clean the controller with canned air, once you get the backing off, theres a small opening on either side of the gold contact connector next to the microphone, you can spray air with a straw tehre and it'll be perfectly for people who just dont want to go deep.

Great video, I followed along every step (up until the soldering part) but unfortunately I still have the problem. The wiper disk on mine did not look gunked up at all but I still cleaned it. My left stick drifts hard to the left. This is the second controller I've had this issue with. Sony will repair for free but you do have to pay shipping, which is a pain. Edit: Ended up sending my 2nd controller it into Sony. I was past the one year warranty period but they took it anyway. The good news is they didn't notice/care that I opened it myself first. Also, it appears they sent me an entirely new controller. All in all I've had to pay probably $20 in shipping total for problems that weren't my fault. Definitely a bummer.

Great friendly step by step instructions. Opened up the potentiometers and cleaned them and replaced them back. Surprisingly small amount of gunk causing such a major issue. Stick drift solved as of now.. will have to see how long it holds. Thank you sir!

Just as an FYI: I went through this procedure and cleaned the joystick just like the video showed. I found NO crud, NO grease. Nothing was apparently dirty at all. The Qtip was completely clean when wiped over all surfaces. But when I put it back together, it worked like brand new. Drift 100% gone.
@RestoreTechnique2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, very curious... there must have been some microscopic dirt/particles that you cleaned off. This shows that stick drift can be caused by something so minor. Anyway, glad it worked!

Can you please tell me where to get the replacement analog sticks that are not Chinese knockoffs with messed up resistance values and thus completely different sensitivity in game?

Not the issue. If you replace the sticks, the controller will need calibration which is done at the factory and not possible on your console.

Very informative video. Will be using this for future reference. I remember when my mom's iPhone got cracked. I fixed it for her. It was the beginning of the rabbit hole of self-repair. My gaming laptop had heating issues, I was afraid of taking it apart. I muster up the courage, I ended up taking apart the entire laptop, the fans and heat sink. It was straightforward opening the fan, cleaning the thermal paste, and applying new ones. Then, there was Mac Book Air. It unfortunately got virus, I was being stalked. I took part the Mac Book, took everything apart out of curiosity, physically removed the microphone on there. There were also my iPhone. I took it part and reassemble it. My next goal is learning how to solder. I've been waiting to do this for quite some time. I've seen PS5 tear down, I used to be intimidated, but it doesn't appear as intimidating as I repair more electronic devices. It's really like a rabbit hole of repairs. I took apart the entire mouse and reassemble it. My PS5 Controller I just bought from GameStop, I knew it was used, I decided I want to see if I could fix this controller. It appears like the PS5 Controller is nicer; you don't have to remove anything, just a simple wipe down on the analog -- no more drifts 😏🤓

I’ve just used this guide, and it’s excellent for the disassembly part. However I had no debris whatsoever, turns out one of the side “prongs” were higher then it should be, so I gently pushed it down a couple of times (this is the green housing option). I’ve lost some upwards range but a calibration solved it! Now it’s better then ever to be honest.
