so what happened to the original solenoid that makes it rattle? as other are commenting they replaced the solenoid but the sound returns? I cant imagine that is a factory setting, as how could they sell accords if they sounded like absolute garbage on start up? Considering buying from rock auto not nappa, im wondering why a new solenoid will still result in the sound returning. Rock auto is about 35 bones vs the napas 70, do you think the fact the nappa is shorter is what made the difference in the sound not returning? Im willing to spend the extra cash if the sound never returns lol

my 2008 accord has the same issue. However Honda service bulletin 09-010 references the VVT/VTC actuator sprocket as the cause to the start up issue/noise. This sprocket is located on the intake cam, VVT sprocket. To me the VVT Solenoid/actuator is the fix. However, the Honda SB seems to say otherwise. thoughts?

Kim Ricker I called up the service manager for the Naperville Illinois location at Honda and he also told me the same thing change the VVT VTC actuator that's partially what led me into this fix and because there's no check engine light. I also did this on another customer's vehicle and it worked as well.... the sprocket is not the issue most of the time at that point you would also have more drivability issues than just the chattering on Startup.

It's a hydrocracked group 3 base stock . While amsoil uses far superior base stocks . Besides my point on all this conversations is that oil won't make a difference in the Honda 2.4 problems .sounds more like a placebo effect to me .I've got technical education and years of experience in the automotive industry behind my opinion . @T T what I'm saying is at the end of the day these Honda 2.4 engines have always been know for issues with timing chains and the valvetrain since 2003. They just have a bad design and Honda never did improve the design over the years . Regardless of oils that are being used in the engine it's inevitable that these engines have noise and problems .
@horsingnaturally2244
@horsingnaturally2244 5 жыл бұрын
The solenoid is not the problem. The VTC (timing gear sprocket) is the problem. The internal lock-pin will break, which causes the gear to retard itself during engine shut-down. And when you start up the engine after a certain amount of time (due to oil pressure loss), the timing chain is initially loose and rattles against the tensioner until oil pressure forces the timing gear to advance back to the top-dead-center position. The solenoid is not the cause of the failure; it's the internal locking mechanism of the variable timing gear (VTC) that needs to be replaced. The average mechanic could do it in about 4 to 10 hours, depending on experience.
@fullcend-tkm73
@fullcend-tkm73 5 жыл бұрын
Wrong It can be either #1 cause for this failure is lack of maintenance and slugging of oil starving the mechanism causing it to fail.... Even our Honda Dealer 90% of the time do the solenoid first and SOMETIMES have to go further

@@fullcend-tkm73 Not at the Honda dealership I had mine serviced at. My solenoid was changed and the problem only resolved for about 8 months and the noise returned. I could see how not changing the oil might cause the problem, but very unlikely. The standard repair is the upgraded VTC 25 degree cam gear with a newly designed lock mechanism. I have seen brand new CR-V's with the problem. So that pretty much nullifies the oil sludge theory. Besides, 0-20 synthetic oil does not sludge.

@@fullcend-tkm73 My apologies. I did not mean to debate you. I too am a mechanic..both aircraft, small engines, and automotive for about 35 years. The only difference between you and I is I am retired and not doing this for a living. LoL The solenoid change is a bandaid to a more serious problem, in my opinion. The locking pin on the tim9ng gear is likely damaged. Changing to a new solenoid is a temp fix by holding oil pressure to keep the timing gear in place. The lockpin is designed to do this without oil pressure. This is why many that change the solenoid end up having the problem again. But upgrading the timing gear (VTC) solves it completely.

Vvt actuator is the phaser on the end of the camshaft The VVt solenoid is what I changed here, sometimes they plug up and don't supply oil properly to the phaser and the phaser rattles on start up I changed this and it indeed on start up increased the oil supply to the phaser and quit rattling on start up Both my mothers and fathers Hondas I spoke to the service manager at Honda and he said try this before you do the expensive repair of the belt and the phaser Alot of times all it needs is a new solenoid and then if it continues the phaser would be the next expensive repair

If you have a slapping noise - especially on cold start-up, then the tensioner must be replaced and will fix your problem.

How come the VTC actuator is different on a 2013 Honda CRV, I think mine is a sprocket if I’m correct bolted on the end of the intake cam
@fullcend-tkm73
@fullcend-tkm73 3 жыл бұрын

Hi I had a question about this problem, I have the problem but NO CODE, and Honda has a Bulletin 09-010 that says Replace the VTC actuator which is the timing gear 14310-RSA-305. But i noticed you said to someone turn the key for 10 seconds twice and if it still makes the noise then honda is right but if not the valve in this video solves it. my question is Why would the key on solve it as theres no oil pressure till you crank ??? logically its not making sense to me . but maybe im missing something and without the code present adds to the confusion. I tried it and i didnt hear the noise but it was also very warm today any thoughts are appreciated!!!

There was a young guy that came out and said I'll show you my Rattle and what he did was he would start the rattle would come from the timing area He then demonstrated after letting the vehicle sit overnight cycling the key sending power to actuators that would normally need power to get oil flow into a certain area so when you start the vehicle that actuator is already in that position and if there was any sludge build-up stopping the actuator from moving, cycling it a few time would dislodge some of that sludge and allow the actuator to open up to allow oil to the phaser immediately For some people that worked and it would quiet the timing set down on Startup which would indicate theres junk in the oil control solenoid or clogging the pre screen on the front of the motor which I showed in the video What I did was I changed the solenoid up front because I called Honda and I spoke to the service manager and I told him I was a Master Tech for international and Ford I would like to do the job myself and I asked him for any pointers and he said yeah sometimes it's just the solenoid and screen you don't have to do the whole timing set because people don't maintain their oil properly and they're lazy and they let it go longer and longer and longer and then that actuator gets plugged up gummed up and the screen gets plugged up and that's what's actually causing rattle due to oil flow restriction it's not so much the timing set phaser itself So I start with the oil control solenoid it's the cheapest it's the least time-consuming and it can save somebody a lot of money if you do that up front It's a huge thing for a lot of vehicles if you look at my Automotive Channel not this channel where I've got like thousands of videos on this stuff I break it down and I actually show people why things fail the way that they do and it's not so much the manufacturers like people think it's more lack of Maintenance and people being lazy not realizing these five thousand mile oil changes are b******* and they should be done a lot sooner than that

Do all cars have an O-ring like that one does on the base? I just did one in a Ford fusion 3 L, but the new one didn’t have an O-ring on it and the one I pulled out also didn’t. They both definitely had an empty space where one could go. Do you know? I was assuming that that specific solenoid is probably used in various vehicles that would require it and mine just didn’t. But now I’m wondering if that’s why it was there on the code it did which require that to be replaced LOL. Great work and thanks for the video.

Some manufacturers used two really nice machined surfaces so you don't have to use gaskets so it could be that the surfaces are machined to not have a gasket but I would think that they would need one but if you got a brand new one with no o-ring ring it's probably how it's meant to be

I believe they even used the old VTC solenoid that you changed on this video. I do sometimes get a rattling sound when it starts and all if the car is revved it rattles a little and goes away. It also ticks/taps sometimes at idle which is more noticable when in stopped in R or D. The people who sold the engine say they dont warranty parts like timing chain and tensioners even though they say 90 days warranty on engine. Sounds unfair. But what do u think my problem could be?

Now I'm dealing with Honda Dealership who love to charge full price for replacing the actuator and then full labor rates on replacing the timing chain. I call this the old double dip. Just add one job cost to the other even though your are already in the engine and removing the timing chain from the sprocket anyway. Funny how they go from $800 to $1800. In all honesty a better spring in the actuator would solve all the issues. What do I know.

+SpeedsMcRonalds sometimes that rattling noise could really be the timing chain itself is worn out and needs to be replaced it just all depends every situation is different most of the time the actuator alone and fixes it and increases the performance. Sometimes putting a oil filter with an anti Flowback rubber diaphragm in the top of it helps, and sometimes the cam that's actually on the side of the cam shaft itself is worn you just have to determine what it is.

Well it's still making the noise, but it isn't as loud as it was before. And the car runs a bit better, so I know that the change had an effect. I'm guessing that the noise will either go away over time, otherwise it's the timing chain or possibly even the camshaft.

The acuator is actually inside i named it both because the parts store had it listed as both Solenoid and actuator Inside the engine is the actuator this is the oil solenoid controlling oil flow to the actuator This was my mothers problem and the most common problem i have found so far If it doesnt go away then its the actuator on the camshaft internally This part i replaced in the video usually does the trick and fixes it but not always Let me know how it goes

Hi, My 09 honda accord 2.4l k24. When on cold starts it rattles for about 2 seconds. I changed the vtc solenoid with a new one. The car still makes the same noise even with a new solenoid. Whats my next move so I can get rid of this noise? Also, I have no check light on. Any help would be very appreciated.
@fullcend-tkm73

The Next Step would be the actuator itself attached to the camshaft but before I do that I would get a high quality oil filter that has a anti drain back diaphragm in the end of it not a cheap one but a higher-quality one ( the higher-quality ones typically have the diaphragm built in ) they typically all have the anti drain back diaphragm..... I've heard of people doing a good oil change and putting a high quality filter on and that helping but I don't know for sure that that's going to work in your situation... normally when the solenoid doesn't fix it, the actuator on the camshaft itself actually has to be changed

So, I decided to do a full maintenance on it changing engine oil and trans oil as well. I did a motor flush to unclog any oil slug in motor. After, I used 5w20 full synthetic high mileage motor oil from oreilys. Do I use mobile1 oil instead you think that would work better? Or should I change the VTC actuator on the intake came? Let me know please I appreciate your time to help.

Honda has a couple of TSB's out that address replacing the VTC Actuator. Should be a free fix if your vehicle (mine is 2014 CRV) is still within the 5 yr or 60k mile engine warranty. The Honda service advisor SHOULD be fully aware of the TSB or he/she shouldn't be working the service advisor desk!

Good video dude. My only issue is that I had a dealership in Charlotte, NC do this work on my wife's 2012 CRV 4cyl and the noise came back in 90 days. Done tons of research since (which is why I am here). Then checked with the local dealer when I moved to Houston 18 months ago, who told me he did not want to take my money because it simply could not be fixed permanently. He said that motor simply does not have a mechanism to retain oil at the top of the motor. Therefore, the oil drains from the lifters and requires 1-3 seconds to refill the lifters. He and others say it will not damage the engine, but it sounds bad. However... I did see somewhere along the way that NAPA had changed their version of the part to correct an issue. I noticed that you used a NAPA part. Did it fix the issue long-term? Lastly, seems like the noise started a while after I started doing the oil changes. She used to go to the dealer. I use Mobile 1 or comparable oil and synthetic filters. However, I have seen a few comments here and there about Honda filters being the cure. Maybe they have some better back flow prevention? Anybody heard similar?

if you look at my channel I have hundreds and hundreds of videos I know the different types of viewing.... this particular day I didn't really care I was so cold I wanted to get it done. In some of the other comments you will see that there are some tsb's listed and the solenoid itself that I replaced in the video doesn't necessarily guarantee the problems fixed it's just the most common fix and the easiest

I have to but when I made this video I called up honda and said look I'm a Ford Tech at our other dealer we owned what's up with this rattle.my folks are having and he said LOOK The service manager said, I'd 100% try the solenoid first because weve seen it work for most of our customers. So I just went with what I had available

What’s weird is that I just pulled solenoid from my 2011 accord and it’s R22 made in Mexico wtf? I bought car brand new and it’s only been to dealer and me changing oil

Is that r22 the original or did dealer change it on me when I took it in for regular maintenance?

Got lost in a KZbin hole looking up mods for my TSX when I stumbled upon your video don't need to fight with you don't mean no disregard if that's how you conduct yourself as a mechanic by using the wrong equipment and it works for you God bless but I guess that's why you only work on Ford's and Hondas while I'm working on Audi R8's ,deloreans, z06's, dragsters and antique and classic vehicles at my second job when I'm not working as general repair technician

So what I don't get is why you want to use this term God in vain obviously because you come to my public profile trying to talk trash and tear my name down on this profile within you want to start comparison between what I do and what you do how does that make any sense? Please just don't comment again or I will block you from this page I've heard enough that's not the Christian like thing to do

Two different sensors dude. VVT solenoid is the big one and the smaller is a camshaft control valve …please don’t mix these up!
