HOW TO FIX Sky Q connection issues with VODAFONE BROADBAND

*THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE INTENDED AS GUIDELINES ONLY - THEY ARE NOT PUBLISHED BY EITHER VODAFONE OR SKY AND THEY MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU OR YOUR SET-UP. PLEASE TAKE THIS VIDEO AS IT IS INTENDED (AS A GUIDE ONLY) - PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES OR ADVICE IN THE COMMENTS. TOGETHER WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER.*
STEP 1 - On your Sky Q Box go to Home, Settings, Setup, Network, Reset (no need to reset the whole box)
STEP 2 - On your device connected to your Vodafone Hub (wifi or ethernet) type 192.168.1.1 into your browser. Log in to your Vodafone Hub using the Admin password provided with the hub.
STEP 3 - Go to the ‘Basic Mode’ button top right, and click on ‘Expert Mode’ then head to the Wifi tab on the top menu bar.
STEP 4 - Select the ‘Wifi 2’ option on the right hand side and chose a Wifi name (SSID), this is what you will be able to see in the Wifi list when searching from your Sky Q box.
STEP 5 - Ensure the Frequency is set to ‘2.4Ghz’ (top option in the list)
STEP 6 - Ensure Protection Mode is set to ‘WPA + WPA2’
STEP 7 - Enter a memorable password for your network.
STEP 8 - On your Sky Q box, head back to network settings, search for your new network. (You may need to try a few times before the list updates
STEP 9 - Connect to the new network using your newly created password
STEP 10 - Go back to your Vodafone Hub setting and de-select ‘Broadcast SSID’ on your new Wifi 2 network.
STEP 11 - On your Sky Q Box network settings, head to ‘Advanced Settings’ - On the page with all the numbers on, ignore the top 3 lots of numbers and scroll to the bottom to ‘DNS server’ - Set all 4 boxes to 8. [8].[8].[8].[8]
You may temporarily loose connection whilst you are changing these settings, but it should settle down and you should have a constant and strong connection to your Vodafone Hub.
Don’t be tempted to used Ethernet, as your router will automatically chose the main network to connect to your Sky Q box and you will be back to square one.
*ENSURE YOU DO NOT USE YOUR NEW ’SECRET’ AND ‘HIDDEN’ WIFI NETWORK - SAVE IT PURLEY FOR YOUR SKY Q SET UP. IF YOU CONNECT ANYTHING ELSE TO THIS NETWORK IT WILL CAUSE THE SAME ISSUE AGAIN.

Genuinely you are a hero, for weeks I've barely had any sky due to dropping connection and failed pairing, just followed this and it's been solid for an hour so far and I havent had to put the wifi password in 99 times in that hour like normal! THANKYOU

Just followed your wonderful and very clear instructions, now able to get netflix and on demand without any trouble. I have a Vodafone router and Sky Q box that has been nothing but trouble for weeks.Now its working perfectly thanks to you. A massive round of applause from me.

I have just changed my Broadband from Sky to Vodafone and sure enough the potential problems described occurred. Following the instructions in this video to the letter resulted in both my Sky Q 2 TB recorder and my 2 mini boxes working exactly as they did with the Sky Q router. An excellent video to follow.

I’ve got skyQ box with Vodafone hub, and had drop out problems for ages. Had sky out who changed the Q box twice and even had discussions with Vodafone. Done this exercise so will see it goes now. THANKS FOR TUTORIAL 👍👍

I’ve had to reconnect back to network every day since I moved over to Vodafone….I’ve just followed your video, I don’t seem to have all the same options on the router login… I guess they’ve taken stuff out since you did this vid….I really hope this fixes it. Here I go….I’ll let you know!

have a question i’ve done all that and when i come back to the homepage of Sky it says “looks like you don’t have an internet connection “ do you know how to fix that ? ihave vodafone router

Just done this today as we had SKY Q installed on Friday and its been driving me mad. I have set up a separate SSID on my Zyxel router (BT Broadband), reset the main box and 2 x mini box network settings and all is working as it should now so far. The mini's connectivity had been a particular nightmare. What does typing the four 8's in do out of interest? Does having a separate SSID stop other devices interfering with the SKY WIFI and mesh system? Thanks for your video!

Spoke too soon! The tick boxes are there for my connection but anything thay requires the internet is not working and is stating I am not connected. Anyone had a fix for this? Cheers

Thanks i will keep this handy. I am going back to Sky shortly and changing to Vodafone for broadband and landline. If there are any issues i will try the steps explained on here.

After months of connectivity issues & searching for answers (obviously Sky aren't much help) I finally stumbled across this video. I've only just changed all the settings you suggested so will write again with an update in a few days but I seriously have everything crossed..! Never had Sky or Vodafone broadband - always been a virgin media customer. However, now planning to move to Vodafone broadband due to house move as the house previously had sky Q TV and broadband and all of the cable routing is there. I would like Vodafone broadband - but don't want new cables all over the place and also was concerned how it would work with Sky Q for TV - I have been a little concerned as I thought this would be a pain, but sounds like it can all work and be stable. Is there a big advantage of the Vodafone broadband over the sky broadband offer? Or for simplicity - should I just go with the single source of Sky?

If you have the option to go with Sky broadband, I would. It was (in my opinion) more reliable with Sky Q. Good luck.

*Some of the newer models of Vodafone routers don’t support WiFi splitting. So this won’t work.*

About to switch to Vodafone from Sky so this may be useful. Does it help with the mini boxes too do you know? Currently my main and mini boxes can't talk (couple of walls in the way) so they appear to go through the router. Have you also switched off the "mesh" network for Sky? Thanks for creating the video and explaining it all very simply.

Stephen Linden I’m an ex-Sky Engineer. I wouldn’t advise switching off the Mesh as that is what keeps all of the Sky Q devices talking to eachother and indeed online. If the devices are too far apart, or are blocked by thick internal walls; I recommend contacting Sky who will send an engineer out to asses if you require an Ethernet hardwire between the boxes.

@@lewbeetham thanks for the information. I connected the main sky q box without too many issues (having only 2.4ghz makes downloading very, very slow) but the mini box was a bit of a pain. This disconnected today but, fortunately, connected again quite quickly. I'm surprised they are working together because they are around 10m apart with a couple of brick walls in between. Must be just using 2.4ghz helps.

Currently my isp is Sky but moving soon to a rural area. BB will be Vodafone 4G via a TP-LINK MR600 4G router. Does the procedure you describe in the video apply the same to connecting my Sky Q box to the 4G router/wifi?

recent upgraded to vodafone gigabit after securing a major deal for a 36 month contract. however my family constantly complains that their TV's and sky Q box and mini keep losing connection the the router and thus no internet access. ive scoured information regarding splitting the ssid but it seems vodafone have removed this from the router tunning page. so im at a loss in how to fix this stupid issue

Not a Vodaphone BB ISP subscriber, but I am thinking of doing something similar for on my Ubiquiti Network via my Access Points. For the life of me I cannot get my SkyQ box and SkyGoExtra to talk. Currently, they (tablet/PC/Q share the same SSID as everything else on my network using 2.4Ghz, but the same SSID also incorporates 5Ghz. So wondering whether creating a new SSID on just 2.4Ghz just for SkyQ and the devices which need to talk to it will do the trick?

Hi there having trouble with my Sky Q/Vodafone setup. Think this will solve it but just wanted to check, do you know if I have my iPhone connected to the main WiFi and the sky on its private WiFi, will my phone be able to see it to share video/music via AirPlay. Or will the Sky App find it so I can watch recordings on my iPhone or iPad?

Hi there. Yes, as the new network is technically the same network with a different SSID, any devices connected to the main network will still be able to communicate with the boxes on the hidden network. I use the streaming all the time and it works as though they were connected to the same SSID. 👍🏼

Anytime I turn the wifi on in the sky q box it pretty kills the wifi to my ps5. The speed is still high enough but the second I turn the sky q on the online gameplay on the ps5 lags and rubber bands like crazy so hopefully this will help

Thanks for the time to make the video, but unfortunately hasn’t worked. All online Sky services just say I have no internet connection yet the network connection status says the sky box is connected as does the Vodafone hub info. Really strange!

Fiona Robbins Hi Fiona. It is best that you reset all of the mini boxes before doing this process on the main Sky Q box. However you do not need to change the settings shown in this video on the mini boxes. Just the main box...

Hi Lewis, I'm having this problem with my sky q multi room box, sorry to sound thick but how do I access that vodaphone screen youre on in the vid? I don't have a laptop so can I access it via my phone on the vodaphone website? Iv not seen it before, thanks, Tom

Hi Thomas. Make sure you are connected to your Vodafone WiFi on your phone or device. Go to your web browser and type in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and then enter. It should take you to the login page of your router. If you look on the back of your router you should have an admin and password.

Sorry to bother you again, mine and my partners vodaphone phones keep disconnecting from the wifi(they have since I had sky Q installed) is there a way I can stop this happening? Thanks

Had this problem for a while now, went through your steps connected to the the internet, but home screen still shows not connected when i am connected you can go on netfix but not demand or catch up. Reverted back to orignal set up. Any suggestions?

The Life Channel Hi, thanks for your comment. I haven’t been a Sky Engineer for a while now so I’m no longer able to offer specific support on issues such as yours. This doesn’t work for everyone (I don’t know why) - May I suggest a full system reboot on all boxes including the router and then try this step again. If all else fails, I’m afraid you’ll have to contact Sky for support.

@@jfkelly0 No i tryed loads of things, back to origanal connection. Is a lot better now i think it must have been usage in general by vodafone customers not so bad now lockdown is coming to an end. Aparently its a big problem between vodafone and sky. The routers arent the problem.

Done all the steps. Get 2 ticks but when going back to catch up etc still says not connected to wifi:( I have the new Vodafone pro router and don’t know if I have to do something different

SO IVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR SO LONG, DONE ALL THE STEPS NETWORK ALL TICKED AND WORKING BUT STILL SAYING IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE NO INTERNET CONNECTION WHEN TRYING THE APPS AND STUFF :( RESTARTED ROUTER AND SKY BOX, STILL SAYS TICK FOR CONNECTION BUT APPS WONT WORK OR CATCH UP ETC.

It’s annoying now the new boosters they supply won’t allow you to set 2.4ghz in the menu it’s disappeared completely

When I follow this I get a tick to say it’s connected but no on demand or online videos. Says I’m not connected. Any ideas?

Hmm. Strange. It may be a sync issue. Try restarting your router. But do not delete any of the second network settings. Just power off at the wall, wait 10 seconds and power back on again.

zayaer malik Hi mate. I am no longer a sky engineer and I am not up to date on their latest software versions, bugs and updates etc. This seems to be working for most people with the same issue as I had. Your issue could be down to a number of things. I’d advise calling Sky for a service visit, however at the moment you may be waiting a while. Good luck,.

Hi will this work for my bt broadband? When I watch Netflix through my sky q box my speed is 1.5mb but through the tv app I get 70mb thanks

I have just seen this video after a sky engineer has just left my house trying to fix my WiFi issues. He said sky are putting in a WiFi extender to fix the issue. It tells the sky box to connect to this hub instead of the main router. Time will tell.

Peter Byrne Hi Peter. The ‘8 8 8 8’ refers to the Google DNS Servers which your box uses to constantly ping and check internet connection. You can set up your own DNS server to check internet connection but using Google’s is pretty much industry standard as it is fast and simple. No data is transferred via this media, the box only uses this server to check for connection regularly.
