Also, there are drains at the bottom of the air conditioning/heat vents that sometimes get plugged up and cause all of the condensation moisture to get trapped in the ducts and also rain water can get trapped. you can actually have several inches of water sitting at the bottom of your vents causing all kids of mold, mildew issues. Find out where the drains are and blast compressed air back through the vents to try and unplug them.

Thank You for posting the simplest, cost efficient solution to this "funky smelling" problem. Since (fabric seats) my car has had this problem for years, I've just accepted to live with it during the summer (east coast)... so, was excited to give this a try. I went a little further by also removing the cabin air filter before starting. Thus, as explained in the video, ran thru all vent buttons (even defrost & recycle)... A/C, then Heat, then back to A/C one more time, then turn off the A/C button, but have the fan running at different speeds for a minute or two, so as to dry excess lysol. Left it with open windows overnight and drove it today and FINALLY, no mildew smell at all. Awesome!

Another trick to keep this from happening too often, is to turn off the AC about a block or so from coming home, to let the system purge itself of all the cold air. The air will still be cold enough for a short time after it's turned off, but doing this will balance the climate within the vents, giving your system a fresh start next time.

This is very helpful. I've been dealing with this same problem with a 2012 certified pre-owned car that I purchased in July. I have had it back to the dealership 3 times and the smell keeps coming back. I just picked it up again yesterday after a so-called treatment by a professional company. Possibly this is what they did. I haven't noticed the smell return yet. I do want to mention that the salesman at the dealership had the audacity to say that the person that did the treatment on my car said that items I had in my car were contributing to this problem. Like the air freshener that I hung because of the odor. Also, laundry detergent that I had in my trunk. I have never heard anything so ludicrous in my life. The noticed the odor the day after I purchased the car. I was insulted by the implication that I was that stupid and made sure he knew it.

Another important step is to remove the cabin air filter before performing the procedure in this video, so that the spray doesn't end up saturating the filter before it gets to the evaporator, where the mildew smell is likely trapped due to the buildup of condensation. Remember to replace the cabin air filter frequently with a quality replacement; For odor control, find a cabin filter that uses activated carbon.

The mildew is able to stick to the AC evaporator because as it cools condensation forms and facilitates mold growth. One way to help prevent this problem is to turn on the A/C with the thermostat on hot, this will circulate air through both the heater core and the A/C evaporator, allowing the heat to dry the condensation and prevent the mold from growing in the evaporator and other parts of the interior ducting. If the A/C is not turned on, the air will not flow through the A/C evaporator. Ideally you should turn the thermostat to heat for a minute or two before turning the climate control off if you've run the A/C during the drive.

A vehicle produces a terrible odor due to the air conditioner's ventilators and filters being roasted or even fried, from the chemicals in air fresheners (or whatever was sprayed in the vehicle) that's being sprayed into the air ventilators. Over time, the chemicals somewhat roast or oxidize the filters, and it produces that roasted, mildew, putrefaction kind of scent. So next time, if you would like for your vehicle to have a nice scent; do not spray inside of the vents. I'd say, the best idea is to powder your carpets and seats, a little. Should be good from there. Good video, btw. Thanks.

This is a good vid however if you have suffered mold poisoning in your life at sometime (like me) you probably know your car makes you sick as well and that harsh chemicals also make you sick as well (multiple chemical sensitivity) you can also pour/spray undiluted distilled white vinegar (yes it smells strong but it airs out pretty easily) and it kills the mold and the brown muck will drain out the evaporator drain outlet, put in a new cabin filter and the musty smell will go away and blow out the air system on high for a little while and the vinegar smell will go away as well.

Tyler Finvold Great suggestion! Chemicals in Lysol do concern me. I'm just unsure if pouring a liquid mixture of vinegar and water will do any damage to something electrical? Glad this helped. When it comes time to changing the filter in the Odyssey, check my video 'Honda Odyssey Replace In Cabin Air Filter (2007 - 2010)', and you can save a bunch of money doing it yourself.

What about using something like Microban or a Clorox spray? Can you use something similar as long as you follow the same steps for safety?

Is it mandatory to remove the cabin filter before doing this?

Will changing the cabin filter help with bad smells in the car? Looking to get my ac serviced and cleaned would it make sense to get a new cabin filter before or after the process?
@dial2fast5 жыл бұрын
Well you should change your cabin filter every 24k miles. Do it yourself and save some money instead of paying a shop to do it. If the system stinks, it's usually something besides the filter.

I have a 2008 Chevy Malibu that has this problem. I took it to AutoXpress a month ago and they sprayed something in the vents. It was fine until this week, the smell is back and stronger than before.

The smell is mold and bacteria from the mildew in the vent system. Spraying stuff into the vents from the inside of the vehicle will not kill the bacteria. You should try what I showed in the video as this will spray disinfectant in through the air flow intake. If it's really bad, repeat my steps 2-3 times. Also try to follow the tips I provided at the end of the video.

If your AC evaporator or Heater core is covered in debris, it could have mold or odor-producing material on it. Check "realfixesrealfast" for a general idea of what needs to be cleaned. Then check youtube or google for the locations of those components on your vehicle. Stay gold.

My AC was having a musty smell a few minutes doing startups. I read a possible fix his to run the fan with the AC off for a period of time. Apparently, this drains something that is the cause of my particular issue. I drove around for about an hour with the fan on but AC off. Now, AC no longer has a musty smell upon startup

other videos I saw said to spray inside the actual vents from inside the car... you not mentioning that means you don't think all that is necessary? I got a 07 VW Rabbit yesterday and it's definitely dealing with this issue. I need to take care of it.

I used Lysol Disinfectant in the past on my BMW 325i. I would also follow it a little later with some sprays of Ozium Original Pump Air Freshener (New Car Scent) from Walmart. This year, my 2013 Nissan Altima 3.5SV is starting to smell when I shut the A/C off and just use the blower. I have Lysol, just need to buy some Ozium.

my 2015 Nissan has some real funky smells when the AC is off and the fans are blowing. I might try your process instead of taking it in.

2015, WTH!!! Me near Minneapolis with car in pretty dry underground parking garage for almost 4 years, that has helped postpone the vent smell this long. After my treatment, no more smell when A/C is shut off an blower left on high. Since I mostly kept on recycled air because colder and stronger airflow, I don't think cabin filter needs to be changed. But then again, It might be that time again. The other day, I bought some Lysol disenfectant with "Lavender" scent. I will reapply with that and also set up a 3 or 6 month reminder on my iPhone. Baby is arriving on 9/15/2016. Almost 4 years and car is still like new, but don't need any foul odors coming through the vents.

A few critical steps were missed...1st step should be to remove the cabin air filter. Everything that you sprayed was trapped by the cabin air filter and never made it to the evap coil, defeating the whole purpose. 2nd is the temp should be set to LOW, not 67. If you want to get the heater core too, then do a separate spray with the temp on HI.

While it kills the mildew, should we also get into the A/C system and wipe away the mildew?

Before spraying in the hvac air intake. Should I take out the cabin air filter? Wouldn't all the Lysol hit the cabin air filter first instead of the evaporator if I don't?
@dial2fast10 жыл бұрын
If your in cabin air filter is easy to remove, it would be better to remove it first.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been going crazy trying to figure out who in the family has the damn stinky feet or shoes! I blamed it on my brother because of wearing moccasins with no socks, made my husband give me his sandals to smell WHILE I'M DRIVING, smelled my own sneakers, bought Woolite Rug & Carpet cleaner thinking some stinky ass, barefoot person was in the car and finally decided to Google the problem. Little did I know there is a such thing as "Dirty Sock Syndrome" that can not only infiltrate your car's a/c system but also your home's a/c unit as well. I bought the Lysol Crisp Linen and voila! All gone! I also leave my windows down now as I live in Florida, my car is garaged and even though I leave the garage windows & side door open, the temps still reach 95+ in there. Also, your video was the best and most useful I found so thank you again. ♥
