You are my freaking hero. My wife’s new Corolla got this. Lowe Toyota of Warner Robins is where I buy my parts locally. However, I would not touch their service department with any length pole. They misdiagnosed an ongoing electrical issue I had 3 times within the span of about 5 months. Learned my lesson, found an independent mechanic, and he had my issue fixed in 2 days. They don't use genuine fluids, specifically the ATF-WS fluid. They informed me they use some aftermarket stuff and claimed it worked better. Lastly, when I questioned services that were recommended to me, the service advisor got kind of hostile with me. Ever since finding this channel and several others, I've just started to learn how to do my own maintenance and repairs. Found an honest independent mechanic, and so-far-so good. Any advice I've taken from this channel has only led me to positive results. Stay away from Lowe if you can help it. I guarantee you know more about cars then those service advisors.

An important note: If your driveway is at an incline, back your vehicle into your driveway. The condensation builds up and will drain slowly but sometimes pool and contribute to mold/spores. This allows the condensation to drain as much as possible. Our import shop uses a very similar product made by BG Automotive. The foam dissolves any mildew and spores in the evaporator. It works very well in our Southwestern Summer heat.

Running the A/C with fresh air in a humid climate is a horrible idea unless the goal is to condense as much water as possible in the evaporator coil and hope the condensate runoff provides a flushing action. Everything that you shared is definitely sound, and makes sense except for one major item. We can agree to disagree that in Florida the summers are so humid. I’ve always used recirculate and only recirculate. Otherwise you’re bringing in the humidity inside the vehicle and you’re not getting maximum cooling and dehumidification. The one thing I do when I cut the car off is I make sure that the AC is reset back to fresh air so that you’ve got some flow through ventilation to help dry up the evaporator and reduce any smells.

You made another wonderful video showing how to replace the evaporator and had a great opportunity there to show where the mold and bacteria live and where the foam would go in and clean everything out. Since my GS300, I have always used the charcoal filters and changed them every year and a half, and mostly always use fresh air in all my cars when using A/C, and like others mentioned here, turn off the A/C while driving home the last 20 mins to help air dry the evaporator box. What I also do at the end of the summer season, when I know that I won't be using the A/C as much, I take out the filter and turn on the fan to high, and spray in some basic Lysol Spray for a few minutes into the cowl intake to help kill off any active bacteria in the pathways and evaporator box. Car AC Shop specialist here is common, they offer complete ac tear down, wash the box, evaporator, change dryer, change refrigerant and ac compressor oil. 😅 so thanks for your answer about the need to change ac compresor oil. Here evaporator get block by 'mud' (dust+condension turn to mud like) is common thing. So about 4 year ago, I do regular cleaning to my evaporator, using cheap boroscope to see the condition, spray some cheap foam ac cleaner, sometimes just using dish soap+water and spray it to evap, let it drain. Do it to my suzuki aerio and toyota avanza (daihatsu made), it's never bad smell, very cold air blast. With cheap maintenance

Thank You Again AMD! I never realized that you need to turn off recirculate mode on the A/C to prevent excess moisture build up. Your Channel is awesome!

I bought the side window clear plastic louvers for my Toyota so I can leave the windows down a crack to cross vent whilst sitting on my drive for days and keep the rain out as well. I can not recommend these highly enough. 😉 I only ever used the internal circulate function when driving in a smokey outside atmosphere. I never thought of using it to first cool down the cabin quicker, good suggestion for next summer.

Use 2/3 of the can on the outside air intake with the AC on full blast with the fresh air setting. Then, pull the cabin air filter out from inside your glovebox and spray the rest through the opening while it's full blast on recirculation. Better dispersion and attacking the problem that way.

Great video. It explained a lot. I just went to the deal for a minor care for my Prius prime and they wanted $200 to deodorize the AC. My car has 45,000 miles and doesn't have any problems. I live in Los Angeles, and its parked outdoors, and the humidity is very low. Sounds like a dealer scam. I said no.

Out of all the American, German, and Japan manufacturer I owned, I never had a problem with My 20+ year old Toyota from New by doing preventive maintenance as you described. Did the same on other manufacturer, but something still ends up failing.

Thanks AMD, I have a 2019 RAV4 and it’s smells like piss when I have the AC on. All other brands I have no issues. I change the cabin air filter too and still have it. I just think Toyota is a lazy manufacturer and not just about being “reliable”. My notion of Toyota being reliable got thrown out of the window after 75000 miles on my 2008 Toyota Camry. But thank you for this video and all other informative videos. God bless!

Another great video! Thanks for the tips! In southern Texas, heat and humidity can be brutal. I've noticed this smell start in my 2011 Sienna, but years ago I was told by the Toyota mechanic to just leave it on "fresh air", and even turn off the a/c and let it idle for a few minutes prior to turning off the engine. I followed that advice; the smell went away; I haven't had that problem since. My vehicle stays outside, so it cooks pretty thoroughly in the Texas sun for hours every day. I think this is why I haven't had that smell return. I may hit the "recirculate" button whenever there's fresh skunk roadkill around, or in bumper-to-bumper traffic, because I don't want those smells inside the cabin, but otherwise I try to avoid it. If the a/c is working correctly, "recirculate" doesn't speed up a/c cooling that much (at least, not in a cavernous Sienna) and once the cabin is cooled, it doesn't work better than "fresh air". Thanks for explaining the process for a disinfection of the a/c system. I might try that myself soon, just to stay on top of the issue.

I'm in Texas and I normally run my automatic climate control at 72°. The last week or so where it's been 100 to 105°, I've run it at 71° and it's ice cold. My system will also as you said, run recirc for the first minutes maybe 10 minutes to cool it down and then eventually switch to outside airon its own. I too was in the car repair industry for over 25 years so I always over maintain. Because of the air quality here I change my cabin filter twice a year and at least twice during the summer months - once in the middle of summer and once near the end - I will actually spray Lysol through the fresh air intake while the fan is on high speed just as it preventive measure. I typically use the fresh linen scent in the white can. Same as you described except I don't use half the can lol. I'll do 5 or 10 bursts of about 5 seconds, leave it running for 15 or 20 minutes with the fan blowing on high, then throw in a new cabin filter if it's time.

It seems that the factory fix should be to add programming to the HVAC module to run the cabin blower for a few minutes after shutting off the vehicle. It wouldn't have to be at the highest setting, just simply time out after a preset time. Just my opinion.

I sprayed 1/3 can of Lysol disinfectant spray on the air vent intake (but never took out the cabin air filter). It makes it kill mold but never had smell/mold problems. Next time I change out air cabin filter, I'll do this.

Very good points in this video. Had my AC system recently cleaned by the dealer using this method and tools (they were having a $50 special so Iwent for it). Took care of the bad smell pretty much. Too bad you can't disable recirculate on most of the newer vehicles as I was told this is automatic, so I make it a point to turn it off immediately upon starting the car (if the AC is left on) and just leave it like that unless there is perhaps a bad smell outside, but then only switch on recirculate momentarily and then back to fresh AC. Luckily I cught the issue before it became a huge problem (some people reported moldy water dripping onto the carpet requiring replacement of the carpet, so I didn't have that luckily.) But oddly, with mine, the smell went away quickly after the car started when I had the issue so it must have been pretty minor. Now it's pretty much gone. I still need to clean out the vents though to make sure nothing is trapped in there (with some Lysol spray). I live in the midwestern US so likely this year being a really bad year for heat, is what made me notice it (may have been an issue in previous years but there weren't as hot as they were this year so that's likely why I smelled it this summer. But again, will just routinely clean the AC system (maybe once a year since it's an easy job) as a preventative measure or if smell the smell coming back.

This such an important video for GX owners. This exact thing happened in my 22 gx. I only used recirculate and max ac, the perfect recipe for this happening along with the fact that the GX ac is an older design. I traded it in for a 23 gx so could get the off road package and I wondered if the smell would happen again and now know it would have. I just went and put all settings like Mr Nut instructed and I'm looking now into some kind of AC for my garage or at least a dehumidifier. Thank you so much and God Bless!!!

If the conditions that can create the mildew are all in place, it can happen in all makes, even when the car has programmed functions to help prevent it. This is a topic that sales people should cover with all new car buyers. It’s so easy to see that your recirc has switched itself to outside air and just reach up and hit recirc and unknowingly override the built in preventative programming.

I have a friend who is a professional car detailer, he said rule number one, to keeping a good smelling car, never smoke anything in the car, even Djarum Clove Cigarettes from Indonesia. The next thing is to vacuum and then steam clean the interior and even trunk and front engine bay if possible. The best is to leave the car doors open and sitting in the sun for about an hour to naturally sanitize its interior. It leaves the car smelling nuetral without any chemical Perfume spray smells.

Our 2017 Corolla does this. It’s honestly sad that after all these years they can’t get it right. I used the Toyota cleaner kit, ( expensive ) and it worked for 3 days. Even my 2011 Ram does not suffer from this dreaded foot smell with no dry out procedure before you get home.
