I have a surface pro 4 since 2016 or so. It initially does not suffer from any flicker whatsoever. But around early 2017, I noticed that the screen flickers whenever I used it for an extended period of time. Recently, I installed intel xtreme tuning utility and I decidied to downvolt the cpu by 0.050 V (mind you, I'm using a i5 version). And so far, I was able to use my surface for extended periods of time; even for gaming. I hope this comment can be useful for some

After so many try of everything, I finally found a fix that worked perfectly for me! Which is turning off the MULTITHREADING ( OR HYPERTHREADING) option. The "Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT)" option in the UEFI settings is the same as Hyper-Threading on Intel processors. To disable Hyper-Threading (SMT), you need to access the UEFI settings by holding power and volume up for 10 seconds when starting the laptop. 1. Toggle the switch next to "Enable SMT" to the **Off** position. 2. After disabling it, make sure to save your changes and exit the UEFI settings. This is typically done by selecting "Exit" and confirming that you want to save the changes. Once you’ve completed these steps, Hyper-Threading will be disabled on your Surface Pro. This instant fixed the flickering for me

Disabling the touch screen interface on my SP4 had greatly helped with the flickering (for now). This might not work for everyone but it's worth a try if you can live without the touch screen feature. Lowering brightness may help too but may also be a placebo. Otherwise use an external monitor. Control Panel > Device Manager > Human Interface Devices > right click on "HID-compliant touch screen" and select Disable device. Repeat for all "HID-compliant touch screen" devices.

I purchased one of these second hand, just to play with. Never used a surface pro. After around 2 hrs the screen as started flickering, as an ex tech, noticed it was extremely hot, put in front of air con and it stopped. Fairly confident this is hardware, i noticed the vents on the side. I am going to get a can of compressed air and blow out the dust and debri, that may be preventing air flow. I think if this is common after 2 years, something is getting clogged internally preventing cool air, etc.

Thanks for the tips. Mine never reverted to the generic MS driver after following your steps removing the old driver at the beginning. I had to go to Intel's site and download the driver there. I also used the Intel's support assistant and had it scan my device so it selected the best driver to install instead of guessing which of the 4 different drivers on the website. I still had flickering rebooting after the update, so I powered down my device and powered it back up and no more flickering. Windows update sucks. I think MS likes to do this on purpose so that you have to go buy a new machine. Now only if I can figure out how to get my machine to boot normally. For some reason it stuck in selective start up.

The definitive solution for this problem is replace the display by SP5 display model. The root of this issue is up to Samsung's crap display model used on SP4. Microsoft changed for LG display model on SP5 which does not have this bug. However, to make this replacement is necessary to change the display's flex cable too.

It is heat problem problem. The flickering is because the chipset of the screen overheats and deteriorates over time. The device is improperly ventilated. It is a faulty design. Components are too tight are there is not a proper ventilation. There is only a air inlet the top while the output is on the side. If you notice all laptops has the inlet in the downside for a good reason. The hot air goes up and the fan is sucking that scaping hot air and recirculating inside. The chipset I think is the lower right side were all the hot airbus is recirculated. The solution is to turn the device upside down or drill holes in the lower side.
@TechRichVideos5 жыл бұрын
I do not believe it has to do with just the fans. The M3 fanless also has this issue
@bobmartin97425 жыл бұрын
Good point. But even fanless it requires to evacuate the heat. My cent that the screen chipset is the same in both models, which is overheating and is mounted very close to the CPU.

Didn’t work for me. Worth a shot, as reviews are mixed, but calling people idiots and then not providing a guaranteed solution, isn’t professional. It’s worse for me when the computer is hot. Microsoft says it’s a hardware issue, I think I’ll believe them.

For the Downloads for Intel® HD Graphics 515, which did you download? I'm having a hard time. And what do you do afterwards because I did everything else except tht.

LEL it literally flickers in the BIOS. This is a hardware issue.

Do you know which part of the hardware is responsible for the issue?

maybe replacing the thermal paste would work

How can it be a software issue? Why does the flickering start when the tablet heats up? Followed the instruction, still flickers. Next time you do a video please do not be lazy. It is not a great deal to reinstall the driver. It would be good if it worked, but it didn't.

Did you end up fixing yours? I am having the same problem, it will be fine until I've used it for a while, then it will start flickering non stop until I let it rest an hour or so
@ursergei4 жыл бұрын
Tyler Rye nope. I now rarely use it for more than two hours a day. So it’s kinda ok now. When I use it for a long time (4-5 hours) the flickering starts again.

Hello all, this is a short temp fix, did all the steps (I have Intel 540 HD driver) as soon as it restarted, it flickered again 🤦🏿♂️ it even self installed and no Bueno. Most of the people in comments say it worked and will check later on but they never responded after years because it failed and they most likely threw that expensive trash out the window. I honestly think it's an issue with Samsung display, everyone states the LG display works perfect. Maybe that's why they ditched samsung and went with LG for 5 and 6 pro series 🤷♂️ wasted money 🤦🏿♂️

Kinda sucks, but some of the time screen flickering is so serious that it can’t be stopped by any of these methods.

I have not tried this solution with my surface pro 4 i17 yet, however by doing a little research and previous knowledge I suspect this problem arises because of the slim design of the surface in addition to the small fans inside causing the CPU paste to wear prematurely, therefore allowing the device to function properly cold but not hot. Thus the freezer solution is not permanent however possible solutions may be to reapply thermal paste, underclock the CPU for better thermal performance and use this device in an Air Conditioned environment as a good practice. Avoid cases if possible as this may interrupt airflow making the device hotter quicker making the problem more severe. It should be advised to take some precautions and not let this persist to avoid a dead CPU.

My screen is still flickering but the display adapter is now Intel HD Graphics 520. Every time I uninstall it and restart. the adapter is right back under display adapters. It won’t uninstall...
