I was bored today and wanted something interesting to do, so I dug my old DV6700 out the cupboard that had serious overheating problems. Followed your video, stripped it fully down, removed a metric ton of fluff from the fan, now it works perfectly. Thanks for your video, Brian! :) .... Only 1 screw left over!

I cannot thank you enough, I've been an avid PC user for more than a decade and after having my first PC's power supply burn out on me as well as paying for the repair, I decided to crack open my computers and work them myself. I've the desktop ones pretty much figured out, but laptops are still a new field to me (mostly because I was reluctant to get one for a long time). This video did not only help me overcome the fear stripping down naked a laptop, but also fix someone else's. Thanks a lot!

Seriously... thanks for the walkthrough. This is the first video of yours that I've watched. This video sticks out among the other videos I watched on fixing an overheating laptop. I will be keeping this video up on another laptop while I try to fix mine from overheating. Your experience stands out. Much appreciated!!

Hey, thanks for the video, helped me out a lot! Got my friends dv6700 fixed up. One thing I did note was the amount of dust inside the cooling unit. You can't see it from outside. The fan blades use centrifugal force to move the air so the dust is thrown out of the fan blade against the cooling fins inside the fan unit. You can't see it until you dismantle the fan. There are 4 screws to it but one is hidden under the black sticky plastic. Disassemble and thoroughly clean it! Much better after!

Excellent guide with good general tips for PC repair. Fan used to constantly be blowing and temperatures would reach upwards of 80*C. After the application of the paste I noticed about a 30*C decrease. With the significant decrease in heat I noticed that my CPU isn't maxing out as easy and able to handle a lot more load.

Thanks so much for posting this! I was able to dis-assemble my laptop, clean the fan and heat sink, lots of lint and dust there, apply new thermal compound and get it all back together. It works! And I didn't even have any screws left over! Thanks again! Pat

ok so we've had some probs with our dv6700 lots of equipment issues. they replaced the fan 6 mths but now its blue screening and black screening so I'm assuming its the thermal paste. What brand of thermal paste did you use???

Hi Mr Dorian. You are not alone with this one, you are second person this month to complain of this issue to me. Unfortunately you have to replace the entire motherboard, I would highly doubt replacing the SATA connector would have any affect the drive being read. Most likely it is an issue with the MB. The good news is they are pretty cheap (around $80 or so on Ebay used). Find the part number (under the RAM) and order one up, then watch my video on replacing it for reference! Thanks!

Okay, Brian. I had mistakenly tucked the power ribbon cable under the connector, instead of INTO the connector. Works fine now. Operated quietly for a few minutes, but fan is still running pretty hard at idle. I think maybe I should have taken that pad off from the copper shim, and just used paste there, instead of putting paste on the pad. Hoping to see some feedback on this from you. Again, EXCELLENT video, young man :).

Hey, ParadiseTech, GREAT video, buddy! I, too, have what looks like a neoprene sort of pad between the copper spacer and the gpu surface. My first thought is to keep the pad in place, but to ADD silicon paste to the pad surface that contacts the gpu surface. This is the only discrepancy between what I see here, and my wife's dv6700. You were very thoughtful to have posted this. Thank you very much for doing so :)

Thank you for the video. It was very helpful. My daughter's DV6700 DC Power Jack appears to have failed and I have disassembled the laptop and ordered a new Power Jack assembly. Thanks,VERY helpful video. Just curious, where do I get a copper shim to replace the rubber or silicon one mine had? Is there a better solution? Could I use something as simple as a penny or dime? I tried it with a penny, but didn't have thermal grease. It ran smoother and quieter after windows loaded, but died quicker than before. It would run before and would only die if I tried to do something heavy... like install windows (which is why I'm trying to fix; it keeps dying before I'm done)

Thanks for posting this video. My laptop wasn't overheating yet, but the fan was running on high all the time and the keyboard was getting pretty hot...so it was a matter of time. I followed your video and fixed up my laptop. My heat sink system was a little different because it used a soft conductive pad on one of the heat sinks, but I cleaned and reapplied thermal past to the other and it worked perfectly. The ribbon cables can be a little tricky if you are used to working on automotive electrical systems, but I figured them out. Thanks for the help!

Try to reseat the LCD cable. It is possible that it was not seated properly. I always go for the easy stuff first. Also check to see if you can hear the HD working away. (Intermittent slight clicking) if so most likely just the cable on the LCD is either bad or not seated. Let us know! Thanks!

Hi Brian (Bryan?). Did doing what you did correct the overheating? I have an HP Pavilion DV6Z 3100 CTO Entertainment laptop and the overheating is taking place to the left of the touchpad in the corner towards the user. Once I get working with something intensive, the fan starts up and that one surface starts to heat up. I think that with patience I can do this. Did using the compressed air and cleaning the surfaces and using new thermal past solve the overheating? Great video. Thanks.

Used to leave it on always over night, got overheated??, would this cleaning and adding thermal paste help in mine?? Also can't burn CD/DVD's any more, did overheating burn something inside?? is it fixable?? Last problem: somebody else was using my laptop, maybe slammed it closed/ down too hard??, now sometimes picture in screen goes away, turning it certain angles, it comes back. Is screen cable pinched somewhere?? Could that be easily fixed?? For inexpensive price??? Thanks again, and where are you in Florida?? I live in Lantana, close to West Palm Beach.=)

Great video thanks Brian. My laptop wouldn't power on once I reassembled it, I stripped it down twice more to look for errors but all seemed ok. I decided to attach ALL the connections and try again. In the video Brian logically only goes as far as he needs before power on testing, when I attached the 2 ribbon cables to near the power button the laptop started immediately - without even hitting the power button, I had unplugged it but had the battery in. Anyway I got the expected post errors as I didn't have the RAM in etc but that's fine.
@MajorRoadRage11 жыл бұрын
New thermal paste will help with heat dissipation from processor to heat sink, but some models have a flaw in their design. Hp Dv6 in particular. The easiest way is to get an under mounted USB powered fan to pull out more heat from the vents but that WILL put extra strain on your lcd cable that goes from mobo to lcd panel. Nexgmedin is right, you'll need a stronger fan or more efficient cooling if cleaning doesn't solve the heat issue
@ParadiseTech11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it will help quite a bit actually, however, you can do this mod with a piece of software called SpeedFan, only fully effective if you clean and replace the thermal paste first!

the issue in hp6700 cto is instead of having a copper sheet they have replaced the gap with a cushion with the thermal paste. the solution to that is you have to replace that cushion with a penny either dipped or coated with thermal paste to radiate the heat out of it. so just open the laptop as he directed and you will notice there is no copper plate there. i was surprised to see that the laptop he used has a copper plate.

+Asif Manan This video is at least three years old, but the HPdv6000 and other similar models suffered from a common fault whereby the laptop wouldn't power up or the screen would go blank and the laptop would power off. This was due to a known manufacturing flaw with the Nvidia chips on the motherboard. It apparently affected Dell models too.

You need to dismantle the actual fan unit itself as there will be a lot of dust inside it that you can't see. There are 4 screws. 3 you can see, one you can't as it's on the corner hidden under the black stick plastic. Unscrew it, remove the cover, use a small brush to brush out the dust and the system will be able to breathe again. Reassemble and you should find it makes a big difference without the copper shim. Temperature before was in the high 80s. Now it's in the 50s and the fan is quiet!!
