How to fix the lens blur bug in Davinci Resolve 18

Today we're talking about a long-standing bug I've seen on channels both big and small - pixelation or wonkiness when using the Lens Blur effect in Davinci Resolve. I'm using Davinci Resolve 18 in this video, but it's been a long-standing issue. I've got TWO fixes for it, so I hope this works for you!

Man, I've had the same exact issue with using all blur effects and sometimes drop shadows as well! I think I found a different work around, but can't remember what it was!? I'm using version 19 beta 4 right now and I just tested three different PNG files and unfortunately, the bug is still there!!!! The Super Scale workaround doesn't work for me, but the Fusion one does... I also just found the other workaround I came up with while trying to find a fix and tested it: Select your PNG file on the timeline, go to the Inspector and go down to Retime and Scaling, change Resize Filter to Bilinear, Box, Cubic, Gaussian, Linear, Nearest Neighbor, or Quadratic to fix it. All the rest of the filters are messed up. I tested all Resolve FX Blur effects and this method works on all of them. You can also change it in your project settings under Image Scaling and set Resize filter to Bilinear or Custom and choose one of the other listed filters instead of the default one which is Sharper. Hopefully this works on version 18 as well!?

I'm glad Arnold could take a break from his busy day to smoke a stogie with us and fix our resolve bugs 😂, fr though I get this bug all the time, that and I have to double comp my magic masked clips so they don't need to be rerendered every time I change their position. Resolve is still so much better than premier though, I switch 5 years ago and get way less bugs and crashing, even when it does crash the auto save works so much better.

Nice job done. I don’t even use da Vinci and found this quite interesting. I know a lot of my PNG files can have choppy outer edged outline if you put them in adobe Photoshop to add outline around them. Or whatever else. I have to go in and re-cut if I want them crispI probably made no sense jon ha ha

Thanks! I totally get that - you have to massage the outline on the PNG to get a clean border. Frustrating at best.

Hi, had similar bug but outline was with colored pixels, when dropped camera shake on PNG or rotoscoped stills or videos

Honestly never had this bug. I have a bug with PLT in Resolve19 not tracking correctly which I haven't found a workaround for yet. If you have footage larger than the timeline size (I have 4k footage I'm using in a 1080p timeline) it does weird things when you output the planar transform and the only way I can fix is if I switch it to stabilize, then reverse stabilize after the thing you want to composite. But by doing this you loose the ability to add motion blur to what you are compositing, since it technically isn't moving, everything else is.

That's an odd one - I hope BMD fixes that before the final release of DR19! I'm always using 4k footage in a 2.7k timeline and I haven't experienced that before.

@@CreatorReality1 I posted the bug in the forum and didn't get a reply. Not tried the beta 3 patch yet though. Fingers crossed. In the mean time I faked the motion blur by applying it with a power window and temporal motion blur. It's dirty and not accurate but hopefully not too noticeable.

@@ArcanePath360 That's a smart workaround! I'm waiting until DR19 is out of Beta before I download it ... I always have too many projects in the works to be able to make sure it's OK for me.

@@CreatorReality1 To be fair it's pretty stable for a beta. In fact just as stable as the full release which crashes just as often on me, if not better. I'm glad I chose to try it. This is the only real bug I found so far and I've been using it a lot
