The COMPLETE procedure. Not just talk. How to fix your Onkyo when the HDMI input takes, 2, 5, 10, 20 minutes to show up on your TV. Or it maybe doesn't work at all with the HDMI inputs.
NOTICE: The DigiKey part number is obsolete. The new & better part is PCF0G101MCL4GB (as of Dec 2022)
NOTICE: The SR607 is almost identical to the SR606, so this procedure will also work to fix the problem.

It's 8 years later and this is still a valuable video! My Onkyo SR-606 has been taking longer and longer to connect the HDMI to the TV, with HDCP error messages becoming more frequent as it takes minutes for the Roku player to see the TV through the receiver. I finally ordered 50V, 105C, surface mount capacitors from eBay to replace the original 4V 100 uF capacitors. The original capacitors are both heat and voltage stressed. The design operates then too close to their maximum rated voltage and it sure does get hot in there. The replacement capacitors proved too wide to fit without bending leads and then, once soldered, I had to resolder them and lean them over because they became too tall with the bent leads, but after all that, it worked! Just like it says on the tin. Many thanks. Warning: Be extremely slow and careful bending leads on surface mount capacitors. They're quite fragile and will snap off. They're not really designed to be bent.

The HDMI on my Onkyo TX SR606 recently stopped working. It was gradual so I thought it was something with the Roku or some BS firmware/software incompatibility. The receiver is 14 years old but still sounds great and is in perfect shape so it seemed like a shame to toss it and get a new one just because the HDMI wasn't working. Thanks to your video instruction and $5 in parts from Digikey, the HDMI is back up and running. One thing to note, the legs on the surface mounted caps are very fragile so be careful when bending them. Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to make and post this video!

Here it 2022 and my unit purchased in 2008 started having video problems using the HDMI system. This video made a lot of sense and worked for my TX-SR606's repair which had started dropping Netflix videos every few minutes or so and I had to keep hitting "resume playing". I used 16 volt caps to play it safe and had no problems bending the leads to match the pads on the board. The only thing I can add for those not familiar with surface mount components is, once the caps are removed, tin (that's a term for putting some solder on) both the board's pads being careful not to over heat them and the capacitor's leads. This makes it much easier to solder the caps in place without over heating. I used some modeling clay to hold the cap's in place and the sticky is a nice idea too. Also be very careful when bending the cap's leads and soldering not to have them touch the metal can as it might short out.

And yet another satisfied customer here! Got my 607 fixed right up (five capacitors, all on the bottom side of the HDMI board). I desoldered the old capacitors instead of wiggling them off. I know in theory the latter should be fine, since the leads are actually not secured inside the component very strongly. But I still felt more comfortable minimizing the stress on the PCB, even though desoldering meant I had to be more careful about overheating nearby components. Worked fine though, and I had no trouble getting the new ones on. Now the HDMI inputs switch pretty much right away (just the usual second or so delay as the handshaking works itself out). No need to warm up the receiver before that works. I was hopeful that replacing the capacitors would fix a couple of other problems I'm having: component video input isn't being upscaled to the HDMI output, and the setup menu doesn't get displayed on the HDMI output. Unfortunately, neither of those issues were fixed. I'd love to hear from anyone who has ideas of what might be needed to fix those (maybe just some other capacitors somewhere?). But regular component video switching works fine and my TV has component inputs, and the infrequent times I need to access the setup menu, I can just use the front display of the receiver. So these aren't huge problems. The big one, having to wait ten minutes before the HDMI switching is working properly, has been eliminated, and that's a huge relief. Thank you for the guide!

10 years old video but keeps on giving! I just bought a TX-SR606 from FaceBook Marketplace without testing first (shame on me). Lo and behold HDMI not working. The previous owner not only told me HDMI was working, but obviously attempted this same repair (shame on him!). I removed all his butchered soldering job caps and replaced with brand new as per this video. Worked like a charm! This video saved me $75, I know it's not much, but it's a matter of a principle. Thank you for great content!

So, I know little to nothing about electronics and have certainly never opened a receiver before. I have a SR606 and purchased a brand new Pioneer for $546 but decided to give this fix a try. I ordered the parts from DigiKey as you had recommended and followed your instructions. That very evening after the fix was done, I returned the new receiver and am happy to say that my old one works like new! The service centre here wanted $75 to look at the receiver and also said that the aforementioned problem was not known to them as a common problem. I decided to do it myself and with your help fixed the issue for $10.40 so THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! and a hundred times over THANK YOU .....

Great how to video. I repaired mine over the weekend and now it works perfectly. One big difference is my model is the TX-SR607 and the HDMI board is laid out differently. All 5 capacitors are on the back side of the circuit board and in different locations than this video shows. Not a problem because the 5 capacitors that need changing are the only CAP ALUM 100UF 4V 20% SMD on the board. Easy to spot because they are the smallest ones.

I can't thank you enough ..... I was having problems with my SR606 and didn't really know which component was failing. But then I just googled the problem and was presented with several links. I was impressed with your DIY instructions. Well, I never soldered anything in my life but I thought it was worth a try. I ordered replacement chips, solder iron and solder for $20 bucks. SUCCESS! The amp is running perfect...you saved me at least $500 dollars on a new amp.

Thank you for this video! I followed your simple instructions and my TX SR606 is working perfectly now - the HDMI switching works immediately again. The biggest thing I learned was your sticky-tack trick for holding the capacitors in place for soldering. I can't believe I had never seen anyone do that before. It will made a lot of future electronics jobs much easier!

LEGEND!! This worked a treat, thank you! ❣ 11 years later - wow!😲 I've just replaced these capactitors on my Onkyo TX-SR607 and it worked a treat! All the HDMI's work again straight away without having to wait 20 minutes for it to warm up. Like others have said, on the SR607 the 5 caps are all on the bottom of the HDMI board and they are really easy to replace if you follow these instrctions. Using the piece of bluetac to hold the caps whilst you solder them is a master stroke! What a tip!! 😆 I'd have never been able to do it without the bluetac.. 🤣 I replaced mine with 16v ones from Ali Express which came in at about £5 (and I accidentally ordered 60 of them!, instead of 6). They were slightly larger, but in truth that probably made it easier to position them. Apparently they are 105c ones, but I'll not hold my breath.. 😅 My only remaing problem now is the OSD still doesn't work, but I'm going to try a reset and see if that does anything. The unit is definitely trying now because the screen flashes off and back on when I exit the setup menus from the LCD readout.

Thank you so much for this video. My HDMI is working again. I can confirm that this fix works for the TX-NR906 as well. However there are THIRTEEN of these bad caps on this unit. I can't believe Onkyo keeps using these insufficient caps on the hdmi board. Such a small difference in price for the higher temp rated caps. Plenty of space on the board for a slightly larger cap. I used to work in SMT so I know how the process goes.

Thank you SO MUCH for this video. It enabled me to fix my Onkyo TX-SR607. I nearly gave up initially, as the HDMI board is different from the one in your video (TX-SR606), and the capacitors are in totally different places (all 5 on the bottom side of the board). Also, in my case (I'm in the UK, no idea if the model is built slightly differently to the one in the video, which I assume is a US model), the original capacitors were smaller in size and diameter than the replacements I got (493-2141-1-ND as per your advice). The originals are marked "H1 100 4V", and the replacement ones "k3P 100 4V". I didn't expect the size difference (as the both the original and replacement ones in your video are of the same size), so I was very confused, and was initially looking at other capacitors that were the same size as the replacement ones, but these were marked "G1 220 4V" and didn't seem to me to be the right ones. In the end, I decided the smaller capacitors were the ones to be replaced, took the plunge and did the job, and my receiver now works properly again! Hope my experience may provide additional clarification to anyone else attempting this on an SR607. Again, I'm very very grateful, thank you!

This fix worked great for my SR606. I used some spare 100uf caps of different styles. (radial, axial, various voltages, etc..) When inspecting the HDMI board, I didn't see any writing saying: "ONKYO" This leads me to believe it is a generic card that may be used in other receivers. If your board looks similar, and it's caps have same values, then this fix could help. Thanks for the video! It saved me from buying a new receiver.

After the second Onkyo TX SR606 finally died (leaving it on 24/7 didn't help), I found your excellent video. There are 2-100ufd on top and 8-100ufd on the bottom. I replaced all 10. 39 cents each, $9.36 with shipping. DigiKey P15086CT-ND for Panasonic's Part No. 100 CFT radial lead, @ 16 volt. They all tested 119 ufd, with very low leakage., and offered higher temperature range -55 to +105 degC. Twisting worked fairly well, except the second one :( tore the pad off from the pcb ! Lucky it was the negative side, which was ground for most of the caps. I soldered in a small parallel splice wire from an adjacent cap ground, and put a swab in between the problem cap and another tower coil to apply pressure, in case the minus lead on this cap had other places to go on the pcb. I actually think this may have been the problem, since the lead broke away with hardly any tension (twisting). You cannot solder it back! I used a Weller WES51, with very small 1/64" ETS conical gold tip, set to 900 degF. I did not bother to remove the old leads, but simply applied more solder, creating a solder bubble above each pad, and eliminating an additional soldering step trying to mount these little guys. It also reduced the risk, in my opinion, of tearing up another surface-mount pad. After shaping the new leads, and checking for correct spacing, I soldered the first lead, then the second, and then resoldered the first lead with slight downward pressure. Now, the cap should be fully connected stress-free, with no lead movement during the cooling phase. i.e. no bad cold-solder joints. I was really wondering if this would fix it, but now it works perfect. Thank You!

I was going to spend $90.00 @ an electronics place ($1.89/capacitor + $60.00 for labor. I decided to do it myself, went to Ebay and got 20 capacitors for $8.00, and soldered them myself. Thanks for your incredibly detailed tutorial. I did follow your instruction to the letter. Unfortunately, I was not so lucky with one of the cap leads taking some of the board with it. My only contribution for those doing this repair is to solder off the old cap rather than rocking the cap off the board. I was lucky enough to have enough room to clear a small copper area for reconnection to the board next to the small remaining crater. Again, thanks for the clear instructions for replacing all the faulty caps and the advice for upgrading caps. It now works again flawlessly. Thank you.

I just used your method to repair an SR706. Thanks for the clear and concise guide. For others with the SR706, there are 12 total 100uF 4V Caps. I had only ordered 10, so I had to choose which ones to replace. Based on comments on another forum I started with the Caps on the underside of the board that were closest to being right over one of the heatsinks on the assumption that these were the caps that faced the most heat and probably failed first. These were the most inboard and forward of the Caps. Once I replaced these, the HDMI switch worked just fine, but I chose to replace all of the remaining 100uF 4V Caps on the underside of the board and 3 of the 5 on the top side of the board, because, well, I had the replacements and I didn't want to take the chance that the others would fail eventually. The 2 Caps I did not replace in case anyone else cares were each located right between 2 larger Capacitors and would have been a bit more difficult to replace. They were also farther away from any heat source.

+John Vitti Out of curiosity does your 607 have the extra HDMI input front bottom left of Amp beside the headphones socket? If so good to know the capacitors all on the bottom! Only looked inside the box so far while awaiting on components to arrive and couldn't obviously spot the one capacitor from the video.

I have a newer revision of the board I think, but the fix still works. Note that the first capacitor number is wrong, it's C8609 not C6809! Right place though. Many thanks :) Also I bought higher temperature rated parts with a higher voltage to prevent it happening again in some years time...

I just started to notice this issue after 11 years of owning my TX-SR606. It takes about 3 minutes to show anything on screen and output audio. It seems to happen on all HDMI inputs... I will try to fix it. Thanks for sharing your experience. Update: I fixed my receiver by replacing just one cap --- C8609, the one on the top side of HDMI/DSP daughter board and associated with Sil9135 HDMI receiver ship's +1.8v supply. The widespread original fix calling for replacing 5 100uF/4v caps (e.g C8609 C8602 C8162 C8096 C8072) is often an overkill as it intends to cover multiple issues with one shot. My problem was a minute-long AV "warming-up wait" on all 4 HDMI inputs ports, which pointed to a possible issue in that second HDMI switching stage chip...

Great video. I have the TX-SR607, the only difference is all the capacitors are on the bottom side of the board. I've never soldiered a thing in my life until last night. Fix worked without any issues. I waited until today, to give the receiver a chance to start cold. Yesterday it would have taken 5-10 minutes to "warm up" before I got a signal from my cable box. It fired up immediately on the first try!! Awesome video!

Should have my caps tomorrow and I'll be giving this a try this weekend. Receiver has been out of commission for a good few years now and I just came across this video this week. I actually have the R667 which came in one of their home theater bundles but the HDMI board is the same with the same cap types, position numbers, and capacitance. Don't know that this will be of any use to anyone in the future but I'll update after it's all said and done. My story is the same as all the others surrounding receivers from this family: unit kept taking longer and longer to connect via HDMI until one day it just stopped working altogether. I hope to God this works because the whole system was great while it worked.

Thanks. This fixed the issue I was having with the HDMI output taking 2 minutes or more to show up on my TV. A temporary fix for this issue would be to enable HDMI power control (RIHD), under hardware in the menu. I think that's onkyo's name for CEC. This will keep the HDMI board powered up all the time, even when the tuner is in standby. The downside is that it will suck about 60-70w. The caps in mine were closer to 5mm. I ended up buying spool of 1000. They are high quality 6v. I'll sell them cheap for anyone who is doing this repair :).

+Kevin Morrison : Find a parts supply house online based out of Europe. If you live in a larger city you may be able to buy locally. Just buy 100uF, 4V, 105C capacitors. They don't even have to be surface mount like these. Radial style caps may look odd to you but they will work just fine and may be a little easier to install. Cheers, P.

Great video - massive help. My unit went awol after 10 years and has now been working brilliantly for a week now. I changed 2 more 100 uF capacitors while I was at it anyway and the board was out - C276 on top and C8607 underneath on the basis they were probably knackered as well. Also fitted 2 12V brushless low noise computer fans to the underside of the main cover to increase cooling (plenty of room), They start up when the main unit turns on on the power switch - picking up the blue and white big wires to the main transformer via a 230V/12v led transformer

Replacing the capacitors on the 706 went smooth but removing the board was difficult. It just didn't want to slide out if the white connectors on the side. Ended up popping a radial lead in the process and had to order one from overseas. Also, be sure to use a good iron while working on these projects if you are a beginner. Crappy irons really make things difficult. Found a super nice 607 for next to nothing and am going at it again. Receiver works great except for the HDMI so hope I scored another good one. Thanks again for the very well made video.

I have a NR-809 with the HDMI problem. It would not put out sound and the speaker indicators would not come on, NET and USB would not work either. Onkyo extended their recall repair till 2018. I've already had 3 recievers fixed by sending them in to be repaired. They also paid for shipping. My father's TX-SR606 had the issue where the HDMI would just quit working. Onkyo fixed that as well. This 809 (the only one i have left) is a beast!. It's big and heavy! After its HDMI board repair it works well.
