OMG this worked! I have a $1,600 machine that is less than 2 months old, and it stopped pulling up the bobbin thread. I followed your instructions and I fixed it myself! The cost was a trip to Lowes to get a hex key set that would fit the screw, but otherwise I would have had to drive an hour to the closest repair shop and wait for it to be fixed. I can't thank you enough, and I feel so empowered now!

Edited to say, I had to go back to the repair today because it wasn't completely fixed. In your video, it's hard to see because the parts are black, but there are actually 2 set screws next to the gear for the bobbin timing. I couldn't see that and only adjusted one, which didn't work. I loosened both screws, the turned the gear with my hand slightly until the needle came up just barely before the hook, and it worked. Tightened everything up and I am sewing just fine now. Thank you so much!

Thank you doesn't even begin to say how much I appreciate you showing us how to correct the timing on a sewing machine. I bought a used, lower end, but good brand of quilting machine for $50. When it arrived the hook timing was nowhere close with the zigzag just being a straight stitch. After a few tries and watching your video several times (it takes me awhile sometimes :) making a few more adjustments, saying a prayer or two, I got it! Thanks again.

Brilliantly explained! You took an incredibly complex problem and reduced it to it's principal parts. The only thing that you could improve would be the focus of your camera on occasions. You could try to place a piece of paper or cloth close behind your subject to force it to focus. Different colours, patterns and texture may work better. Thank you so much! 👍

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried to use a GoPro for macro, and that didn't work out very well. I'm trying to improve with each video, there is a lot of room for that improvement.

@@SewingMachineRepairGuy It's not at all easy to get the focus right and framing the shot while manipulating controls, describing things and managing lighting! Macro is hard, because the greater the magnification, the shallower your depth of field. Having the ability to manually adjust the focus is helps hugely and many digital cameras lack this. I struggle with macro photography with my phone for this reason. I have noticed your improvements. Keep up the good work - this series is great! 👍

Thanks to you, I was able to finally set the timing on my machine after replacing the plastic gears on my machine. I couldn't find any other video on youtube that explained setting the timing as clearly as you! I had a question and I'd be very grateful if you could answer it: My machine is now able to sew a decent straight stitch, but on zig-zag, when the needle comes down on the right side, the upper thread keeps snagging on the right "toe" of my Apollo bobbin case after the hook catches it and it comes around. Is this an adjustment that I have to make on the hook timing or is there a problem with something else? The stitches are okay on the left side, but there are skipped stitches on the right.

I have Singer HD. Now I opened needle plate and took bobbin case out for cleaning. I also made paint marks to hook and frame for timing check . The marks match when needle is lowest position.

I think the best thing for me to do if I have such a problem is to take the machine to a repair shop and let someone qualified to fix that problem. Right now I am having problems with one new machine stitching practice material. I believe the problem to be with the bobbin and have to solve that problem.

Thank you so much! I have a Brother xl-5130 all mechanical with a vertical bobbin. Anyway the timing was off, but I didn't see an adjustment on the horizontal shaft. I decided to adjust the needle bar height instead. I noticed on a zig zag stich that the timing between the zig and the zag is always off because on the zag the needle has just moved to the right about 3/16th's or so (the width of the stitch) and is always early for the hook. Is there an adjustment to time the zig and the zag independant of one another? Right now I split the middle to try to average between the two. If I would have been able to make the adjustment on the horizontal shaft, are both the zig and the zag being adjusted at the same time? or does that just adjust the zig or the zag independant from one another? Nice I have a very old Singer , previous owner welded a broken arm on it (he has more sewing machine, and give this up for free because is not working well), but welding is not in the right position so the machine is skipping often, maybe I will see if I can fix it and add an electric motor to it instead of foot. I remember 10 years ago buyed a new Singer and trash it but my mother go to the trash bin and bring it back. It was not used anymore... maybe I will fix it an make it as a present back to my mother, or use it for hard staffs as is full metal..

Hello! Thanks for the demonstration. It helps to understand what is happening. In your Opinion, Are the home machines capable of sewing nylon webbing with the bonded nylon #69 machine? My current model is the NECCHI ROYAL SERIES Model # 3204FB. I seem to be having a lot of tension issues (Bird nesting on the bottom) as you described in your video (which is great help by the way). I have no current way of checking my thread tension other than the dial settings. Using this thread, should my Bobbin tension be set the same as you described in the tension issues video? Thanks !

A good lesson but you overlooked the fact that the bobbin has to turn clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the machine so it has to be placed in in the correct direction. Cheers

I tried this on my Janome Quilers Companion. Sadly didn't work. When I practiced watching the needle to hook with top thread in, it always picked up the thread, but it still doesnt sew, missing stitches on straight and zigzag. I have a singer Merritt 9612, that developed the problem today were the bobbin gear is driven on the shaft and there’s no screw or way to tighten up the gear that is on the shaft is slipping, I don’t know if it was pressed on or glued on.

I have a question about the bobbin hook ring. It got caught by the thread and stuck so tight that I couldn’t pull it out. So I took the bobbin case out, still couldn’t pull it out. So I took the right side part which has a spring that holds the bobbin case in position. After I took out the thread, I thought I did it. But, the needle doesn’t pickup the thread from the bobbin. The hook ring is not moving anymore. Is there any hope to fix it?
