Scarified my not bad looking 50msq lawn a few weeks back, looked like the Somme when I'd done 2 opposing passes.. over seeded at 50gm/Msq and top dressed with a soil/ sand / compost mix, well raked level with the back of the rake which I'd extended with a strip of steel. Watered every 2 days when no rain etc. Looked grim for a few weeks but now it looks pretty good. Top dressing filled the hollows etc, AMG hardly present. Always raked the old lawn with a spring tine rake to 'fluff up' any AMG previously present. Other thing I've done is swap out the front rollers on the mower (1964 Qualcast battery electric one) with 2 small wheels, this stops the raised AMG stalks being flattened again by the front roller, lots more in the grass box too. Love the vids.... very instructional, swapped to all liquid feeds / treatments now too..

I've finally found a use for my otherwise useless oscillating saw fitted with the rounded blade, the patches of poa I was getting were the size of large dinner plates and the grass was tuft like, I tried cutting a cross hatch pattern into them, raking out and removing the material with a spring tine, then too dressing with fine compost and fine fescue seeds, it seems to be working well 😅, I also brush my lawn after cutting and watering to enhance the stripes, my neighbours possibly think I'm nuts, but they can't get stripes in their plastic lawns 😎

For me the thing that works best is to just remove the Poa patches altogether. Just dig them out completely, fill the hole up with soil and reseed. After 4 weeks the lawn looks perfect again. I do this each year in early May. That way the Poa patches never grow larger than the size of a 12“ record and each year there are fewer patches to treat…

Robbie, excellent video. Quick question if you could be so kind to answer. My lawn has quite a good sward but there are more weed grasses than I'd like, particularly meadow and Yorkshire fog which seem to clump over at one side of the garden near a field. I cut the grass short, scarified, cut the grass again and now the meadow is ugly white stalks whereas the fog is ugly grey scalped patches. I seeded, applied feed and some seaweed. I didn't use any top dress as ran out. I assume this is good, or will this awful stuff come back? Anything else to do? I want it gone! Ps someone said you can spot blast it with roundup and seed and top dress the spots? Cheers

If you keep cutting the weed grass will it eventually go and allow the good grass to thrive?
@Ubergamer2562 жыл бұрын
Poa A. is a prolific seed producer and nothing short of a yearly program of preemergent + xonerate + a kicker (Tenacity/Pylex) will provide consistent control (PoaCure is great but only available if you are a golf course). Most everything done here is just spreading the seed heads. In my climate Poa germinates nearly year round and I've had to do considerable research to come up with a management strategy as well as quite costly chems (mentioned above). If I couldn't get access to those chems and PRG was a good grass choice, I would renovate every 3 years or so. Manual removal with Poa A, if you miss just a few plants that drop seeds, will become impossible the following year. Lastly, Poa A tends to root very shallow and checks out during heat waves. You can take advantage of this if your climate allows, as they will drop seeds before dying and then once temps drop and rainfall comes back it will regerminate. Time your pre-emergent correctly and don't aerate during that germination window.

I bought a cheap electric scarifier , removed the scarifier head and dismantled the cutting blades . I then sharpened them up with a grinder until they were as thin as a knife . @mattyburrows90592 жыл бұрын
40% of golf greens are poa and they have verticutters with blades super close together..so no but it keeps it down...i think the best thing is do what wimbledon did ..they used fescues and bent grasses up until the 90s..they had poa problems because fescue grows seeds dies grows seeds dies..so poa can get in..someone invented dwarf rye and now they dont get much poa because rye grows..it doesnt seed its nut off and die..so poa has less chance of getting in..wembley and wimbledon use mm50 seed for £5 per kg but you have to buy a big bag..or just get johnsons tuff grass from b&m..that is also dwarf rye..no point using anything else in the uk unless you have a golf green and you would use bent.green keepers would be better using dwarf rye on the fairways and tees but..they are so called experts and think they know better..reality is they are 30 years behind the rest of the world..so id scalp the lawn verticut up and down side to side and overseed with dwarf rye.top dress done

This is exactly what I have found. Anyway why did the Irish scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field (couldn't resist either) 😂

Do the cylinder mowers front roller just lay it down again?
@Premier_lawns_official8 ай бұрын
Great question. Yes and no The roller does help bend the grass over, adding to the stripe But its main purpose is to keep the cutting unit stable ensuring it moves straight and cuts at a consistent height.

Great video, I'm redoing my front lawn, I've used weedol lawn weedkiller to kill the weeds before I scarify. Do you know how long it is after the weedkiller that I can reseed? I've looked online but can't find a definite answer, thanks.

Would you recommend the scarify cartridge (with the blades) as opposed to a power rake cartridge (with the springs)

Hi mate, discovered my lawn is full of leatherjackets and lawn is covered in crows every morning. The crows leave a fair bit of mess but they are getting rid of the leather jackets I guess. Should i try and keep the crows off it or let them at them! Anything I can do to lawn to minimise the leatherjacket problem. I have aerated, scarified, overseeded and top dressed with screened tolsoil so just waiting to see the benefits of this. Cheers

Hi Mark, molasses is meant to be a good way to control leather jackets. Mix it with water and spray it on (I haven't used it so not 100 percent up to speed it) the sugar content kills the leather jackets as they don't have the stomach for it

very interesting, here in the U.S. midwest Poa is also a problem, most use a pre-emegent to control it as well as other crabgrasses, one weedy grass extremely tenacious is quack grass, which spreads by rhizomes and is perennial. if anyone has had success managing it please comment. thank you!

quack grass, and I know it will get out of hand if left to go. you cannot dig this out. I take a small paint brush ,and brush roundup on the leafs. If you spray it, it will kill a lot more grass than you intended. The roundup will control. keep doing it till you don't see it any more. If you try to dig, the rezones will just keep going and create more.

My lawn is currently being taken over with clover. Have scarified, aerated and seeded, but come straight back. Any suggestions please?
Hi Robbie, looking abit of advice regarding order of process steps with poa involved. usually i'd be thinking cut it, scarify it, aerate it and overseed. However i have a bit of poa in the front lawn and wondering if i should change that order up so i dont drag poa seeds into the aerated holes? so would it be better to cut it, scarify it, cut it, aerate and then overseed?

I killed off my lawn which is 90ft x 60ft because of couch grass. I then bought another 18 tons of soil and reseeded. Was fine the first year but this year has now been taken over by couch again. I don’t know whether it was in the new soil I got or if it just started to grow again. I have now just applied glyphosate to kill it all again 😡😡

Thanks Chrissie I hope it works this time then. I also had a new lawn fitted last year (expensive) they did not spray or dig deep enough they measured me that they did put a very thick layer of top soil and my lawn is riddled with couch again. I have dug out some of the worst by hand but plan to verticutt (I bought a home machine) and reseed and put the fleece on top as advised by PL and scarify in September time dependant on weather and re-seed again . Hopefully I can keep on top of the worst of it. My area is around 100 meters.
@chrissiep16642 жыл бұрын
Apparently the couch has rhizomes that are about 8” deep and they spread underground all over your garden. They send shoots up about every 2ft. I tried spot weeding them with glyphosate but it was a losing battle so I gave up and killed the lot.Hope yo get yours sorted.

You can remove all the weed grasses from your lawn And the next day there will be dozens and dozens of new weed grasses growing Remove all then And next day They back !!! I’ve been pulling out poa morning and evening 7 days a week for about a month Crawl around lawn for 30 mins Ensuring not 1 left Go out next day and another 20 to 30 plant stalks sticking up that have appeared over last 24 hours

Same here. But I'm doing this for the first year, last year I had no clue. So my hope is if I keep doing this it will go away, at least in numbers, in time. Those seeds can survive long and they probably have a big stock from the time I didn't remove them. But we'll see.

I tried that mowing and scarifying last year and it didn't work. This year I have only put on spring fertilizer (0,45kg N /100m2) and I'm not watering till the normal lawn is blue and dry. It seems to work since the poa spots are already going brown.
@Premier_lawns_official2 жыл бұрын
The trouble with holding off watering is AMG will still be seeding. Less N will definitely help though
@demacherius12 жыл бұрын
@@Premier_lawns_official That is corect. Im mowing only with basked so the seeding is not a issue. Also I noticed that it stopped making new seeds after beginning to go brown. My plan is to kill it fast now so I can take care of my lawn the summer over in a normal way and stop using a basked.
