YES!!!! I have a Model Y and I can hear this thing! It’s it felt like this ear pressure and for some reason no one else can hear or feel it, it was bothering me so much. I’ll try this tomorrow for sure. You are the only person that address this, even people in Tesla, say its wind noise
@WilliamBennerJr

I took a ride in a Model 3 and the wind buffeting is completely absent. However, Model 3 has a trunk right up against the back seat, so any motion of the trunk lid will not "pump" air into the cabin the way it does with a SUV / Hatchback. So far I haven't ridden in a Model Y, and I hoped that it would not be as bad -- especially with the experience Tesla now has in making cars. For sure the newer Model S and Model X are better in this regard, but I believe the air suspension has a lot to do with the improvement.

I just did a test drive with a model y and myself and mother in law who was in the front seat both felt this and we both had headaches after riding for 5 mins on inside road. The road was pretty rough and bumpy so we felt everything, my wife who was in the back seat didn't feel it. I was able to take the loaner home and adjust the bumper but still feel it. It did alleviate it a bit though

Thanks for the kudos! I'm glad my video *explained* what is happening, but I'm not sure there is a real solution per se. Adjusting the rubber bumpers definitely helps, and on the newer Model S and X, the air suspension also helps. But I think all hatchbacks essentially suffer from this condition, to one extent or another...

I thought it had to do w altitude because I am a little up in the mountains and usually I drive down to LA. It wasn’t unbearable but it was there. The top left rubber “stopper” wasn’t making full contact, and the right one was not making a strong contact either. Did the envelope test on all of them after adjustments. All tight now. We will see how it turns out next time I drive to LA. I think it’ll take care of the issue. It just makes sense, my biochem professor used to say. Thank you. Will keep watching for more tips.

Yes understood. Some people are very sensitive to this. I think the newer Model X is much better, especially because of air suspension. Also, I prefer cars with smaller wheels as there is essentially more air cushion provided by the tires. Some people think the larger wheels look better. Even if that's true, the smaller wheels just give a smoother ride and may really help to cut down on this wind buffeting effect.

adding sound proofing to the inside of the trunk well help as adding some wight to the steel helps as well . turning the plugs out to much can make a water leak . it can all so be coming form the lower bumper if all the tabs are not in all the way as it playing as a air scope and adds air pis inside the space of the bumper and car body its self . if i remaber right there is a inside body vent back there and as it moves all so makes the buffeting inside the car . if this is so the duffeting well change on other kinds of road ways and speeds .
@WilliamBennerJr
@WilliamBennerJr 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, turning the plugs out too far is a bad idea, but when they get too far out, the trunk won't even close, and body panel gaps become noticeably large, so there is a good amount of "negative feedback" to prevent turning them out too far. And yes, there is most definitely a vent in the rear, but I'm not sure it is accessible or adjustable. There are certainly people who have dramatically reduced the buffeting by adjusting the bumpers. That helps for most (but not all) people...
@klaasj7808

They should have done that in the factory. My E39 from 1999 has in the trunk and in the complete engine compartment sound proofing material.

Yes, actually one of the service guys at the Tesla Service Center in Orlando has his customers watch this video. @@WilliamBennerJr Interesting video, thanks for sharing. Just wanted to note that we experienced this resonant buffeting+pressure in four different Model Y Long Range samples recenty (I was test-driving and renting, to see if interested in the model) and these symptoms were so bad I ended up with headaches and a passenger's vertigo was triggered. We haven't experienced this in any of our other hatchbacks going back decades and from what I've read it may also relate to body construction causing resonance issues and not just hatchback adjustments. Indeed, from my experiences the symptoms occurred after 40MPH and did not happen at highway speeds, it was only in a specific window of speed and maybe surface where it happened, but it was very uncomfortable.

Thanks. I don't have a buffeting noise, but at higher speeds, I get what I perceive as a "strange" wind noise on the upper right (I have a sliding roof), however, if I move my head in that direction, I am unable to localise the source of the wind noise. Tesla service center (who came along on a test ride) said there was nothing unusual; still: a so-called "premium" car should not have that sort of "erratic" wind noise above ca 100 km/h. But I'll try your hatch adjustment test..

I’ve had a 2021 Nissan Armada for couple months, it’s a huge SUV. One month ago the mechanic in the service center decided to mess with the bumper rubbers to reduce the rattling of the hatch door as he claimed and since then every time I drive I feel the immense pressure in my ears and sometime severe headache if I drive long. My wife and kid in the back seat don’t feel anything but when she sits next to me in the passenger seat she feels it. I knew the problem is there with those rubbers and I tried to adjust them back and forth but without any success I guess I’m so desperate that I’m just uncontrollably screwing the threads around in order to fix it. Of course Nissan Service Center didn’t notice anything wrong with the car and claimed all is fine, so I’m really happy I found your video even though it’s completely a different car brand but at least that proves I’m not crazy 😅. Will try adjusting those rubbers again but this time more calmly and hopefully I can succeed in eliminating the pressure as I can’t live with this car in this condition

Very interesting observations; thanks! However, there’s one thing that doesn’t seem to make sense; maybe I’m misunderstanding the thinking here: What we really want is for the seal around the hatch to be evenly and thoroughly (but not overly) compressed. It would seem that, if we make the pressure on the stops high, then that would reduce the pressure on the seal, which in turn would make it seal less-well, wouldn’t it?
@WilliamBennerJr

A loudspeaker has a "surround" made of rubber. It's part of the suspension. The purpose is to allow the speaker cone to move in an axial direction, but restrict rotary or radial motions. And a speaker is made to um.... speak! So no, all of the soft foam and even cushioning in the world will not help. Ideally you completely arrest all motion which will keep the trunk from "speaking" (compressing air) into the cabin.

I had trouble finding your video. I will certainly give this a shot for my Model S. I would describe my issue as low frequency road noise. It sounds like a very deep subwoofer is reacting to every little bump and crack in the road. I used a sound meter and was getting readings between 55 and 65 dB. driving my wife's CRV over the same section of road I got readings between 40 and 50 dB.

Yep, I know what you mean. I heard one person piling a bunch of pillows between the top of the rear seats and head liner, to effectively cut-off the hatch -- thus forming a conventional auto with a trunk. I never tried it but they said it worked well. It might be a good experiment to see if the noise you're hearing is coming from the hatch (as I suspect it is). If so, then do what you can to "immobilize" the hatch back, including making the adjustments I detailed.

Ugh this is the worst, I know exactly what you mean as I am sensitive to noise (tinnitus). I think the rear sub floor void is acting as a drum and resonating on expansion joints, ik currently looking into it myself as I already added sound deadening in the trunk its bad. I have a model 3 btw
@WilliamBennerJr
@WilliamBennerJr Жыл бұрын
When I first got my X, I also though it might be something related to the floor, but now I don't think so. Could be wrong... I considered making what's called a "Tuned mass damper" for it and putting it in the middle, just under the center console, but I just never got around to it. I really think a tuned mass damper would help. In any event, the newer Model S and X seem much better, and I think the air suspension makes a big difference too.

Just clear soft rubber hose from hardware store. 3/16 ID and 5/16 OD . I cut it to a point and with lots of lube I was able to fish all the way around through one of the breader holes in the weather stripping.

Yes, Model 3 for sure won't have this problem because it has a real "trunk". Any motion and associated air modulation of the rear hatch will be captured by the back seat and not transmitted into the cabin.

Hi William, Thank you so much for this video. Hard to find information on this ear buffeting phenomenon. I am experiencing this in my 2023 BMW iX. Other people riding in the car have not felt the discomfort. Unfortunately, I seem to be sensitive to it. I really like the automobile, but the ear issue is a constant irritant. I have let me dealership know of the problem and they have told me they are investigating it, but have not had any other reports of the issue. I have passed your video on to them to help them understand the issue better and give me some corroboration. Once again, thank you for taking the time to create and post this video.

You can get the same sensation in some cars by rolling down just 1 window a little. It's like a pressure to a slight vacuum in your ears. My Model 3 Tesla doesn't do this, but I heard the Ys do.
@WilliamBennerJr
@WilliamBennerJr 4 ай бұрын
It's a bit of a different feeling. The "windows down" creates a Helmholtz Resonance. The buffeting being discussed here is a compression effect, that will change frequency and amplitude, based on what the car is rolling over on the road.

@WilliamBennerJr
@WilliamBennerJr Жыл бұрын
Pull up on the trunk a little while trying to remove the envelope. The envelope should be hard to remove even when you're pulling up. If that's the case, then the rest is simply due to the fact that the car is a hatchback.

Experiencing headaches in my new 2022 Model Y. Originally thought it was due to high RF and LF waves in the cabin (due to cellular antenna and battery) but I am intrigued by the theory it is air buffeting. Two confusing points: I don’t notice any sound & I begin to feel burning headache sensation even when car is stationary. I tried this strategy of unscrewing the trunk stoppers but did not find that the headaches have gone away.
@WilliamBennerJr
@WilliamBennerJr 2 жыл бұрын
The sound may be sub-sonic. To me that's the real difference between Model 3 and Model Y. The Model 3 is not a hatch back -- it has a real trunk. Any air modulation is kept within the trunk. It's a different drive sensation entirely...

I’ve got a model 3 Standard 2022. Similar issue as you have, sounding experience is very annoying for the passengers who sitting in the rear. It’s just like something is shaking at the trunk of the car all the time. Will try to fix this today
@WilliamBennerJr
@WilliamBennerJr Жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Since the model 3 is the only one that actually has a trunk, I have found that this kind of air compression effect is not found on Model 3. This is found on hatchback cars that don't have a trunk, and have essentially an entire open vehicle. Your issue might be something different.
@a4Audi2153
@a4Audi2153 Жыл бұрын
@WilliamBennerJr the model 3 has a very large hole in the trunk which I would think, can replicate a hatch back with just simply a smaller opening not a large one. I think my model 3 has this issue.... I'm going to check it out tomorrow for possible adjustments

Thanks for the comment. I've only ridden in Model 3 a few times -- once when it was first released, and a few times as Ride Shares. They seemed pretty solid to me and no sign of the buffeting. I'll examine more closely next time the opportunity presents itself.

Fantastic explanation. I did the envelope test on my MY and got some reduction then I wondered if another test could demonstrate how good the seal is… so I grabbed some sidewalk chalk and applied to the stopper and then closed hatch to see the imprint. Noticed quickly which ones weren’t making a good seal. After adjusting using chalk the improvement is now noticeable. Thank you!

Actually the air suspension really helps. Newer model cars are much less of a problem. Nevertheless this affects all hatchbacks where the hatch is really horizontal. For SUVs that have a hatch, but the hatch is mostly vertical, this is not an issue.

You hit it right on the nail head with this one. I went to test drive MY twice, and both times, i had this unexplainable boom sound and ear pressure that literally gave me headaches both times. I drove less than 20 miles. When I explained it to the tesla guys, they had no idea what the heck I was talking about. When I test drove M3P, no such sound, Nada! I really wanted to pick Model Y, but it looks like this issue just made my decision for me. Thanks very much for producing such an informative video.

If you unscrew (turning counter clockwise) the button-like rubber pieces, this has the effect of pushing more strongly against the hatch, thereby keeping it from bouncing as much.
@HappyHappyPanda88
@HappyHappyPanda88 Жыл бұрын
@@WilliamBennerJr I just tried unscrewing, it had the opposite effect. I had more air buffetting. My theory is, with the added spacing, the rubber seal is not as compressed while closed hence more movement? I don't know...
@tv175s3
@tv175s3 Жыл бұрын
@@HappyHappyPanda88 I was wondering the same. The question here is, what is making the seal? There is a rubber seal all around the trunk, so I think when unscrewing you put less pressure on rubber seal and more chances on vibrations. Also when unscrewing the electric lock seems to be making more effort to lock, perhaps because the gap is wider. Anyway I tried both direction on all 4 points, but still I'm not able to get rit of the buffeting. It starts at 85kmh/53Mph. Maybe I have another issue, although the description matches very well. I checked tyres, and tried pressures between 3.0-3.2bar / 43.5-46.4psi.
