Scotty; that was one of the best descriptions of how air conditioning system works. Most people make it sound a lot more complicated.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 6 жыл бұрын
Well, with the electronic crap they have in cars now, it can be quite complicated actually. Not in the actual working of how an AC system works, but all the electronic sensors, solenoids, blend door vacuum system or electronic actuated blend doors, all sorts of crap in these new cars to fail, even the controls in the dash fail. Simple rotary knobs worked fine LOL, all that electronic push button dual or quad zone climate control crap is what's gonna cost you lots of $$$$$ when those systems fail. Some systems use vacuum pressure to operate the blend and vent doors some use electric motors, some use a combination of both, and none are easy to get to and often requires tearing your dash apart to get to them to even see what's wrong. I like my old vehicles that just have a couple of easily accessible cables LOL.

Scotty, this A/C video is great. As vehicles become more and more complicated by electronics and the requirement of specialized tools, it’s good to have folks like you to simplify what otherwise could seem complicated and overwhelming. Thanks. I do, however, have a question regarding your insistence on having a strong battery to ensure peak A/C performance. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to recall you stating in one of your other videos that, once the engine is running, all electricity needed then comes from the alternator, not the battery. I also believe that the alternator charges the battery. Right?

mine kept doing that when i was running the ac while idling out in 100+ degree wether even when i revved up the engine some so it can spin the fan faster it still did it, and it literally resulted in the ac blowing cold and warm musty air back and forth on my 04 isuzu ascender (gmc envoy) and turned out by using your car as a cooling station is a good way to harm the engine in the long term

To add to the AC radiator part... Bought my '99 Tahoe in '03 and the AC rad and coolant rad had a lot of bugs, dirt and small stones embedded with a lot of the fins bent. I took a piece of welding wire and bent each end into a different hooking pattern then hammered them flat and taped a piece of vacuum line over the mid section of the wire for a handle grip. I laboriously, over multiple days, picked out all the crud while straightening up the fins as I went. I now have a 1/8th inch square holes screen over the grill which catches the larger materials while allowing air flow. This vehicle also has an add on transmission radiator mounted over the lower right passenger side Ac rad. area which would be extra cooling when trailering. I never pulled that until last year when I wanted to see what was behind it. To get to the trans radiator requires pulling the grill which was fairly easy to do. The space that little rad covers was caked with dirt and sand which I was only too happy to remove. I now have a standard piece of window size screen attached over the trans rad section of the outer screen. I am a fan of using the lye based spray cleaners and a hose for finish up cleaning. The lye is good for dissolving organic matter as well as cleaning in general.

the refrigerant goes into the evaporator via a metering device ( it regulates how much goes in). the refrigerant is in a liquid form into the evaporator where it boils off (like boiling water turns to steam) and absorbs heat around the coils from moving air. it is sucked into the compressor and compressed into high temp high pressure vapor and pushed into the condensing coil (in front of radiator) where it cooled back into a liquid to start all over again..

This is very healful. I tried 2 fix my AC a couple of times however after the last 2 mechanics told me There was an escape on the evaporation system which will cost me over +$1,000 I decided 2 leave it alone. Funny how when there's cool weather in turn the AC and blows cool air, not cold but cool but when it's hot and I turn it in instantly it blows hot air. My heater works very well and good cause sometimes it gets cold down here in the South.

Bring back the little glass window in the AC line so we can look for the bubbles or lack there of bubbles.

You can buy them and add them yourself if you have the tools to do it. I did that in my 88 Ford Bronco 2 when I repaired the AC last summer, although those little inspection windows don't really tell you anything of use, other than if you do or don't have any refrigerant. You need a gauge set to actually test an AC unit.

Probably leaks at the connections, those dang o-rings were prone to failures causing leaks. So the whole system needs taken apart, new o-rings installed, leak tested, and recharged. I repaired the AC in my 88 Ford Bronco 2 last year for about $500 that included a new compressor, accumulator, o-rings, refrigerant, and the tools needed. About 1/3 the cost of paying a shop to do a 1/2 ass job. Pretty easy to do, time consuming and requires some tools you probably don't have but once you buy the tools you've got them for future needs too. Vacuum pump, AC Manifold gauge set, and refrigerant were the main things I had to buy but I have the tools and some extra refrigerant for future use if needed. So far so good on the AC repair on my Bronco 2. Just needed new o-rings and a new compressor.

+William Todd Wait, wouldn't your 88 need the old type of refrigerant?
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 6 жыл бұрын
Extremely easy to convert it to R134A, just requires swapping out the service ports, vacuuming down the system flushing the system to get all the old R12 out and the old refrigeration oil out and put new oil in compatible with the R134A, then leak testing the system and recharging. Since mine needed a new compressor flushing the system and replacing the refrigeration oil was even easier, plus I had all the pressure lines out as I replaced all the o-rings, put a new accumulator in and flushed out the condenser and evaporator, put everything back together, tested the system for leaks with the vacuum pump, then simply recharged the system to factory specifications. Took a couple hours start to finish, once I got all the parts I needed.

Well the junkyard can be an option. But sometimes junk is all there is. You can buy a repairkit for the compressor if its available as an alternative. When you shop for the new compresseor tryshopping for a different brand of compressor that will fit your car. Some brands are cheaper than the oem. Gud luck

Replacing just the clutch isn't all that hard. But get out your multimeter and be sure that the clutch is getting power when the AC should be on first. I assume you've checked the fuse and relay.
