The problem with trying to maximize credit score is that you lose out on high yield savings interest or other short term use of the free floater loan from credit card if you pay the balance before the statement cycle date. Sure, nice to have high credit score, but if you’re not applying for credit card or other loan, no need to prepay the credit card charges prior to the statement cycle date.

First its unfortunate some have such power over your credit...also i was going to trade my car in for another from the dealer ..i always use..i was denied at first because they ( the credit reporters) said i had no credit cards and they wanted very badly to get me into one of their credit cards..i did have a credit card for years and thats a load of b.s. ...i went back to the dealer and told them what i found out and they reconsidered thankfully. My parents put us as authorized users to build credit over the years. That's the only reasonable situation where that would be okay imo. Also, some credit cards with annual fees have lower tier cards without fees that they will allow you to downgrade to. So you can keep your credit, but lose the fee.

Yep. When AmEx pissed me off with my Blue Cash card, I told them to knock it down to the free (useless 1% card). When the new card got here, I never even bothered to activate it. It is kind funny how being an authorized user without the responsibility to pay the card actually builds credit. What is credit worthy about zero responsibility? And my parents did the same thing for me back when I was a ghost. Added me to their ancient AmEx account and had the card sent to their address. When 'my card' got there, they cut it in half. I never even put eyes on it. Had over 30 years of $60K credit history in one day. Over 700 beacon and never paid one dollar on that card.

I can confirm that being an authorized user on someone else's credit card works. I have over 120 cards myself and I have been adding people to my cards as authorized users as a side hustle - it improves their score and allows them to repair their credit, quality for a mortgage, car loan, etc.

When my husband died our pickup payment was on automatic. As soon as he died, that stopped, but I didn't know until 3 months later. The bank refused to fix it, even though I paid off the entire balance. Also, even though I was the one paying off the mortgage, it doesn't count on my credit score because I was the second person on the loan--the wife. Such bull! I would have taken the hit for not paying. Sex discrimination lives!

I have no debt besides a student loan that is in collections. How does this affect my credit score? I never use more than 5% of my available credit card availability and ALWAYS pay it on time. My home is paid for and I have no auto loans.
