FX4 only comes on 4 wheel drive trucks. They have/had and FX2 package which was the same suspension, skids, etc but on a 2 wheel drive truck.

Get the bow line on dock, turn the motor toward the dock, in reverse and it'll bring the tail in, with the bow secured...

Yes exactly, Ford had an FX2 for a while which was 2 wheel drive trucks with a locking rear axle. But unless the guy just bought an FX4 sticker for appearance, it absolutely, 100%, always means the truck has 4 wheel drive, if ordered as FX4 from the factory. FX4 in F-series means the rear axle has an electric engage locker, different shocks (unless also matched with max tow package), rubber floor mats (like weather tech), and other small things like hill descent control and rock crawl mode. So if you see FX4 and they are spinning the rears, they either added the sticker or don’t know how to engage 4WD (or maybe broke 4WD).

When I was a kid my best friend came out on our boat. We have a private dock and he said that he would grab the pole as we were pulling in. He was really serious and preparing himself to grab it. So we pull in, he grabs the pole and jumps out, he's holding that pole for dear life, screaming "I GOT IT I GOT IT" as the boat goes up onto to the beach. My whole family just bursts out laughing. This was 30 something years ago and when he comes down to the lake now we still mock him for it. That's the beauty of boating, it's a great source of memories.

reason why the big 4x4s have traction problems down there are the winter tires mounted on in 90 degree weather. Theres no reason why those trucks with v8 engines should have trouble like that unless the tires are awful, which they are for those kinds of conditions.

I don’t think it automatically includes 4WD. But it DOES include an electronically locking rear differential, which would absolutely help in this scenario.

@@Mitch.Engel84 I’ve owned 6 fords over the last 20 year. Fx4 is only designated on 4wd trucks. It comes with a skid plate , loving diff and beefier shocks. The fx2 is the 2wd version of the same look but it doesn’t come with skid plate. The 4x4 is available on most of them but it’s just the transfer case and front diff.

People buy these 80 $90,000 trucks and don’t even know what options are on it so they might not even know they have four-wheel-drive all they care about is the touchscreen

WRT the big trucks lighting up tires at the ramp. While I don't have a steep ramp to go experiment at, I think a lot of what we're seeing is the slippage that most 4x4 systems allow in 4H. That FX4 for instance, I don't believe that package is avail in 2x4. I've checked the manual in a Chevy and a Ram and in both 4H allows front to back slippage that 4L doesn't. I'm suspicious that a lot of these trucks would pull the boat out no problem if they put it in 4L. There was even an episode of MBR a while back where some guy was lighting up the back wheels for a while. Seemingly far too long for someone not to figure out to put a truck in 4x4. Some stranger went and said something to him and seconds later he pulled it out with no trouble. I think the stranger told him to put it in 4L vs. 4H.

Thats highly dependent on the type of 4wd system. Part time 4wd systems have a locked center differential, Similar to a manual they have a syncro that gets the front drive shaft speed equalized with the rear drive shaft before the dog can engage. In both 4HI and 4LOW the front and rear shafts are coupled by a mechanical dog. If thats slipping you have sheared the teeth off the dog gear or shattered the dog gear and you now only have 2wd. The reduction is earlier in the power train and is equal to just having a granny reduction as far as the front and rear shafts are concerned. In full time 4wd systems you can have either a limited slip or open center differential. These use either a wet clutch pack to connect the two drive shafts (just like a motorcycle clutch) or a special type of differential. These will allow different speeds between the front and rear shafts, and some models will lock in the center diff only when in 4LOW, others have an actual toggle switch. Then you have AWD systems, and there is about half a dozen methods used, but the most common are clutch pack and hypoid gearsets, both will allow different speeds between the front and rear. Some dodge products are really weird and will lock the front and rears together in 4HI but allow the front and rear to spin at different speeds in 4LOW. It was pretty much the wild west in the 90s and early 2000s. As a mention, because people get this confused all the time. Some Chevy models only had 4-auto and 4-low, this was sometimes abbreviated as A4WD, but this is NOT all wheel drive. It's just auto 4wd. Which just means it's locked in on the center axle disconnect and waits for a low traction event to apply a set of clutches in the transfer case to attempt to synchronize the driveshafts and lock into 4wd. During this period you can see the front and rears spin at different speeds, and when on a boat ramp you'll often hear the transfer case slam into gear as the throttle is let off. If you don't let off, the front and rears never match speed and you just burn out the clutch packs. That IS why the owners manual says to engage 4low (many will say 4HI as well) for hard pulls, they don't want you using auto-4wd. Generally speaking, older vehicles will not have full time 4wd or awd, unless they are jeeps or special chevy products. Most of the 90s and early 2000s trucks are just a straight part time 4wd.

I have 99 GMC SIERRA 4x4 w/manual transfer case, wouldn't trade it for the world, no problems, simple stick operation, no electronics on transfer case to get salt water corrosion, of course everything can get messed up, but simpler fix !

Is it normal in the US that everyone tie up the ropes at the dock/pier with losing ends hanging around? I learned that the end of your ropes always have to be on your boat. So you just swing it from your boat, around the pilar and secure it on the cleats of your boat

A lot of people do. I don't like having both ends tied to the boat. Sure it sometimes makes it convenient but the courtesy docks here have poles that are taller than me by about half a meter, and i'm about 1.8m tall. So it's easier to just double up the bite, tie a slip knot, then secure the loop with an overhand using the tail. You wouldn't leave it overnight, but you can tug your heart out and it's unlikely to come off without a decent amount of pulling and jerking. Long enough to go get the trailer at least.
